Yep, this is pure pop nirvana and received unanimously positive reviews (go back to the beginning of this thread to see) so if this doesn't smash on Radio then likely nothing she ever releases will...or any release by other 40+ females for that matter. All we can do is hope the reason updates were low this week was because it was up against last week's huge spin increases and it will fare better this upcoming week when it will be compared to lower updates. It's still racking in adds (got 31 last week) as well so there appears to be interest, stations are just not increasing plays. Point being is it ain't necessarily over yet but the signs aren't promising and if this doesn't fair better it is simply because of Radio's issue with their female pop stars aging. They rather keep spinning multiple songs by the same artist over and over and playing the #1 song almost 20,000x/week than diversify their playlist. The Katy Perrys and Taylor Swifts of the world better enjoy it while they are in their 20s and 30s because the future don't look too promising after that.
Hot AC seems to be holding steady though which is nice to see...it just went top 20 on that format.

Yep, the 21 adds this week is a good sign that Radio isn't dropping it anytime soon which is re-assuring after the updates slowed down.

great performance, probably her best yet for "make me like you". now let's hope her carpool karaoke segment airs the week the album is released ;) not sure what's going on with radio, she's getting adds upwards of 20 stations each week which i thought would be enough to sustain better updates but i guess the stations that added are either not playing it or only playing it like 1-2x a day.

While radio can be ageist, iTunes Charts don't lie. Sometimes great song just don't connect, and while this is good, it's quite forgettable. I don't wake up with it in my head or anything, and it's certainly not another Cool or anything like that.
Her album will still open around 85-100k and she's still relevant enough off past hits to go on tour. A much better spot than 99% of the artists from her day.

^ I agree. It's a nice song - easy breezy beautiful - catchy - fresh sounding, even - and had it been released as a 3rd single 8-10 years ago when she was on top of the world, it would have smashed on radio. But I feel it lacks that special something that makes it stand out, especially as a Gwen Stefani record. It's solid craftsmanship for a pop song - it's entirely likable - but it's not special enough for her to recapture what she had and/or pique the interest of today's new, younger audience. It's a more Hot AC Gwen than the edgy Pop Gwen.
While I also agree about radio being weird about supporting older artists - and even the comment about iTunes not lying.... there is a correlation between radio spins and iTunes sales much of the time. This is to say that I think if radio went all in and was spinning this in heavy rotation - we'd see a higher rank on iTunes. Obviously this isn't always true, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.
It is what it is - she definitely has an uphill battle from this point going forward... along with all the other female acts who have passed their prime. Her extra long hiatus didn't do her any favors, either.

iTunes charts and radio does lie though.
Look at Ellie Goulding with Something In The Way You Move, in the 80s while she's top 10 on HAC, 14 on Pop and has over 50m audience.
There is no way this could be very high with such a low airplay lol. It did well in the first week when all Gwen fans bought it. Anyway, #76 on iTunes :)

Her extra long hiatus didn't do her any favors, either. She definitely does. The thing a lot of people fail to consider is that artists over 40 are often past their musical prime anyway, and their career status can be radio's biggest reservation to spin the new materiali, not the fact that they're over 40. Yes, iTunes sales undoubtedly correlate to radio spins as there is an exposure and promotional factor associated with charting well on radio, but plenty of songs have been "made" by the public per se. Here by Alessia Cara being a recent example. Pop radio spins shouldn't be charity, and should realistically reflect whats...popular. It would be a different scenerio to have the song sitting in the top 10 on iTunes and still being paid dust, but that's not the case.

^ Yeah - it's just unfortunate sometimes (not necessarily in the case of this particular song) when radio just flat out refuses to give a song a chance AT ALL based on where an artist is in their career and assuming nobody is going to wanna hear it. It's not really about the song in many cases, it's about the artist and their cool factor to the target demographic. That's the business though! In pop music, you're in today and out tomorrow. Some artists have defied this rule, but it's VERY rare... and almost non-existent now. Those that have defied it aren't defying it anymore. The iron curtain has come down, and it will take a miracle for it to lift. Hopefully there will be these exceptions if the songs warrant it - but this is not one of those songs, imo, as much as I wanna like it.
Ellie Goulding is a new/current artist in the eyes of the demographic Pop radio is targeting, so regardless of what she puts out... it's gonna get some attention from Pop with varying degrees of success. For now.

Anyway, #76 on iTunes :) Yes, but Ellie is currently a bigger force on pop than Gwen. Overall? No. But at the moment? Yes. SITWYM is coming off of a Top 5 hit, while this is coming off a song that just missed the Top 20. And regardless, Ellie's song is slowing down a lot because, like you said, it's not selling. For an artist without momentum, you need to be selling more than what MMLY is at this point in its run to keep going. The iTunes gains these past few days are promising though, so we'll see how far it'll keep going.

this song's iTunes performance has been fine - it went top 10 for a few days upon release and after the grammys/kimmel promo. even after that wore out it remained in the top 30 for two weeks (better than "used to love you" did initially) and only dropped when it was removed from the "hot tracks" section on iTunes. otherwise it's radio audience is way too low to all of a sudden shoot the song up the charts. people can't buy a song if they don't know it's out or haven't heard it.
besides, "used to love you" went top 3 on iTunes on two separate occasions and still couldn't make it past #20 on pop.
i do agree however that her biggest roadblock (besides her age) is the long hiatus she took in between releasing new music (even with no doubt). this definitely hurt her standing with pop radio and is likely part of the hesitation. as clive davis would say - an artist needs a "continuity of hits" to stay relevant.

So it's over on the radio already? I really thought this would do better than UTLY on the radio. At least it's rising on iTunes.

Wow, this is ridiculous - it hasn't even been a full month since it went for adds yet. Radio just didn't give it a fair shot. I guess the only way for a 40+ female to get a top 10 hit is to pair up with a younger male on the track like Madonna did with Justin Timberlake ("4 Minutes) and J.Lo did with Pitbull ("On the Floor").
She currently has 3 songs in the top 50 of iTunes Pop so it's not like there isn't interest in her music anymore. Plus Gwen is still marketable - she's high in demand to book on all the TV shows and still getting tons of press so I'm sure if Radio actually played "Make Me Like You" their ratings wouldn't suddenly plummet bc they are playing a 46 year old woman. So silly, oh well...
