I wish Bey wouldn't lean her head out of the car with those long braids - it's really unsafe! Also, this is hot. I don't understand you people. "What do you mean 'you people'?!?!"

Hey look I get it if a song isn't your thing and not to be rude but only opinion of a song that matters for me is mines but what I will say I just don't agree with the no hook part I read last page. This song is very catchy just maybe not in the way you're use to. I dunno.

I think the main issue with most who've trashed it (myself included) is that she's been there done that - just an album ago - more than the lack of a hook or whatever.

I find it to have stronger hooks than "Surfboart" and "Lo-o-ove, Lo-o-ove"

I'm slightly hoping that this gets performed at the Grammy but
1:It seems too raunchy for tv(even with SB50) 2:I'll feel bad for Rihanna 3:It seems too early for it to be performed anywhere else
But who knows

This shouldn't be in Pop. I doubt this will even see a Pop adds date. This is purely Urban. Yasss massa we should take this urban calamity and put it where you feel it belongs. Never mind it's a new single from one of the biggest international stars in the planet! Hey there is a lot of music released these days I don't think even belong on a music Forum but who am I to judge

BORRRRRING!
This is why I haven't really warmed up to R&B/Urban music genre since the early 2000s--this one's too slow moving and minimalistic sounding. Why do Urban songs always sound the same? I feel like from a musical standpoint there's just no substance. Is there anything I just don't understand?

In what world? Like, obviously it's great that you have your own opinion, I just don't see how it adds up at all.

Never mind it's a new single from one of the biggest international stars in the planet! Hey there is a lot of music released these days I don't think even belong on a music Forum but who am I to judge Not meaning to play Devil's advocate here, but this definitely is not a song that would be a hit on pop. Even with it being a release from Beyoncé it's not exactly skyrocketing up on pop airplay. That doesn't mean this is a bad song at all, though. Nor is it anything with racist intent. The song itself is just made for the urban radio format, where I'm sure it'll be a smash. It should likely do well on rhythmic too. But the sound of this song just isn't anything that would suit into pop radio playlists. It's sonically comparable to "Bitch Better Have My Money," for example, which did very well on urban, but did very little on pop. The only way I could see this becoming a decent hit on pop radio is if it becomes too massive of a hit for pop radio to ignore it, much like "Truffle Butter," for example. Remember that the top 40 radio format is designed to play a mix of pop music and overall hits. "Formation" is just not a pop song. Sure, it has some pop influence in it, but at its roots, it's very much urban. Nor has it really been given a chance yet to grow into the sizeable hit it needs to be to gain the format's attention. It'll take a little bit because the song is still brand new and the "OMG new Beyoncé!" edge needs to wear off first before we can really gauge just how this song will perform outside of the urban market. A very comparable circumstance is when Taylor Swift was still fairly new to pop radio. At the time of "You Belong with Me"'s release, for example, she was still "that country girl" to pop radio. Even though YBWM definitely had a lot of pop influence in it, it was still in its roots, a country song made for country radio, and even though she was coming off of the huge success of "Love Story," YBWM was just too country to grab the attention of top 40 playlist makers. That is until the song became a big hit. It slowly started to gain some traction on top 40. That's when her label decided to give it a full push (pop remix included because, again, it was still kind of "too country"), and it went all the way to number one. The same thing could potentially happen here, but it's definitely not going to happen right off the bat. I am rooting for this song, though, because the production is quirky and exciting. I can get down with this crossing over.

Let me clarify a little more. I like older R&B music. I like Motown. I like funk. I loved New Jack Swing. And even some of the 1990s hip hop has grown on me over time. I liked OutKast and Nelly too. But it seems that for me it just went downhill from the 2000s on. I also think there was more of an edge when sampling was prevalent, because there was something for the song to feed off of. But ever since R&B/hip hop moved away from sampling, you get a minimalistic sound using just a few synth chords. And that's why Beyoncé's new one just doesn't do it for me. Her husband did it better with "99 Problems" if you ask me. Yeah, that has minimalistic synths too, but I think he put it to better use. All right, I realize I may have picked the wrong battle, but I still hope you get where I'm coming from. If the above paragraph doesn't cut it, then I will step aside and find something better to do with my life.

All right, I realize I may have picked the wrong battle, but I still hope you get where I'm coming from. If the above paragraph doesn't cut it, then I will step aside and find something better to do with my life. I think it goes too far to say it all sounds the same as there are a couple of other trends going on in r&b right now**, but with regard to this trend, I get what you mean. The minimalist trend is hard to pull of precisely because it uses so few elements, there are only so many directions you can go. (Similarly if people tried to do that in pop too much we'd probably decide everything sounded like Love Yourself and Same Old Love eventually.) 99 Problems benefits from being a very early adopter of the sound. **Ironically I have been thinking recently that there has been a recent pattern in r&b and hip-hop of relying way too heavily on a '90s sample to carry the song. Sampling has never gone away, but it's not being employed nearly as creatively these days. I also think hip-hop culture has absolutely cannibalized contemporary r&b to the point that "hip-hop singer" is no longer an oxymoron, but that's another discussion for another day. This isn't to say all r&b is like that though. I genuinely believe there is some stuff out there that you would like but the issue is that it's not easy to find. For example, I'd recommend Tinashe's first three mixtapes to you but only a few of the songs from her one album. So of course the album is what's on Spotify and the mixtapes you'd have to hunt for a download link; and only Tinashe diehards know the deal with the mixtapes because they're totally different from the image/sound RCA decided to put forth with her singles.

Didn't like at first Two days later, I could marry this and be happy with it forever It grew on me to my shock, since I disliked 7/11, Flawless was half and half(live version does slay) And her last few singles before those were all eh-good. Didn't like Drunk In Love 2 much, only loved Love On Top, Countdown, & Dance For You from 4 Partition was sexy but still just on the good, but not love. This I really like.

I didnt say anything bad.Don't take that as something else.I would feel bad though.I don't want Rihanna to keep getting side swiped by others. For example, isn't Kanye supposed to release Waves sometime this or next week? Her sales would be taken away by that.At least for a bit
