I'm surprised how small that bump is for Kendrick considering he was the big winner of the night. Those are weak numbers in general but good for Adele, of course.

By big winner, I meant his performance. Everything I read cited his as the best performance of the night. It was a major highlight and I saw the album at #2 on iTunes yesterday, only behind Adele. 24k seems very low.

Whilst I agree his performance was the best, I don't think it connected the best with the audience. For some obvious reasons (which shouldn't even be reasons) and because I don't think rap in general benefits hugely from award show performances unless there's a hook girl/guy ("Love The Way You Love"/"Empre State of Mind"/"Nothin' on You etc).

Praise alone just doesn't seem to do it for Kendrick, right? It can be said that his music not connecting to a larger audience predates this Grammy performance.

I'm surprised how small that bump is for Kendrick considering he was the big winner of the night. Those are weak numbers in general but good for Adele, of course. Is it though? Kendrick's hype and sales have pretty much always been somewhat disproportional compared to other top acts. For all the colossal hype and acclaim when it dropped, it sold 324k in its opening week. Strong opening in general? Of course. But compare that to Drake moving nearly 500k of his mixtape in 3 days. Likewise J Cole also sold more in his first week (although it should be noted 2014FHD came out in December). Kendrick's album also fell below both of them saleswise faster than most would have predicted. I think history will ultimately view Kendrick very positively, but sales and acclaim/hype don't always go hand in hand at the same rate, especially in the time period that a work is considered contemporary. All that said though, this isn't a really good Grammy effect pretty much across the board.

Yeah, it's not like Kendrick is the only one with a relatively low bump.
Also, Lamar is acclaimed, but not really a hit maker like Drake. His biggest singles were "Poetic Justice" and "B*tch, Don't Kill My Vibe" which peaked in the 20s on the Hot 100. I think To Pimp A Butterfly has sold well considering he hasn't had any real hits off of it.

YOUR TOP 15: ADELE HITS #1... AGAIN Following the Grammys, there's a lot of speculation as to how the numbers may play out at retail. Keep your eyes peeled for an update tomorrow, once we’ve seen a full day of sales. It's safe to say, though, with a performance on the big show under her belt and the power of Valentine's Day-driven purchasing, XL/Columbia's Adele will be #1. Joey+Rory—a respected country duo (and spouses), who were just nominated for Best Duo/Group Country Vocal Performance—look like they'll have the highest-charting debut this week. The couple's well-documented personal struggles have elicited a strong response from their fans and community. Adele (XL/Columbia) 160-180k album, 190-210k SPS Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 55-60k, 63-68k Justin Bieber (RBMG/Def Jam) 45-50k, 95-100k *Joey+Rory (Gaither) 43-48k, 46-51k Now 57 (NOW/Legacy) 41-46k Rihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 35-40k, 75-80k The Weeknd (XO/Republic) 28-32k, 53-58k 2016 Grammy Nominees (Republic) 27-30k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 27-30k, 40-45k Kendrick Lamar (TDE/Interscope) 24-27k, 30-35k Sam Hunt (MCA Nashville) 24-27k, 35-40k Coldplay (Parlophone) 21-24k, 28-33k Twenty One Pilots (Fueled By Ramen) 19-21k, 43-48k Kevin Gates (Bread Winner’s Association) 19-21k, 30-35k Adele (XL/Columbia) 17-19k, 23-26k [21] *Debuts( HDD) Nice boost for Kendrick.

Disappointed with the Grammys boost - although HITS could update the final numbers.

Is Kanye's album allowed to chart on streaming alone?
And why does it seem like this year's Grammy was more about tributes than current music?

What's the main reason why Kendrick Lamar hasn't made a lot of hits on his own? Is it that his songs are too profound, racial and depressing to be accessible to the general public?

I'd disagree that Kendrick hasn't made "a lot" of hits. Swimming Pools, Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe, Poetic Justice, & i are definitely what I would count as hits. I'd put Backseat Freestyle in there as well honestly. He was also part of f**kin' Problems which was a hit. Bad Blood obviously. Give It 2 U also got traction.
That's definitely not a bad record for someone who has only released two major label efforts. It's just disproportionate against his current album, and this has been noted multiple times since it was released. But still, even if they weren't hits to the levels of what came from the previous album, I definitely wouldn't call The Blacker The Berry, King Kunta, and Alright as non-events. It's just that they weren't those to the extent of past material on their own separate from the album, and I think people understandably expected that coming into his followup to his big breakthrough.

Uhm but genre hits sell albums too. I don't really see your point.. If EVERYBODY who loves rap digs this album no pop airplay is needed.

Let's be honest nowadays unlike the past there are very few non genre big artists. Most successful acts are all genre specific so not sure why we holding that against only Kendrick. I can think of Adele,Beyonce and Rihanna and few others who crossover to all kinds of ppl and only one of those three are actually of this generation.
