It flopped after debutting high. Just like how Lady Gagas Dope did.

Repeat after me [clap]Ariana Grande's record setting single 'Focus' was a top 10 on Billboard, where it debuted, and is a hit.[/clap]

But it has 461 million views on Youtube. Anything Ariana puts out gets tons of views, no question about it. But how many people outside her gigantic fanbase even remember it? Focus got hardly any airplay before being dropped like a hot potato. I seriously heard on the radio maybe three or four times in total, and trust me both CHR and rhythmic in my city love to overplay Ariana songs. It evidently wasn't a big enough hit for Ariana to want to put it on her debut album, despite intending to be the lead single.

Just a hunch but I think it was dropped from the album because they realized that the song sucks (due in large part to the chorus). But once again the song not being any good has no bearing on the definition of a "hit."

Everyone has a different set of experiences in life so differentiating between which songs "feel like" hits and which ones aren't is entirely subjective. It's all influenced by your friends, the type of household you grew up in, the school you went to, the playlist at work, the state/country you live in, the radio stations that you listen to, whether you watched MTV or not (back when they played videos), etc. Like, if song X feels like it was a big hit because your friends are always talking about it; well, if you had a different set of friends, they might be obsessed over a different song.
For example, I grew up in an a small town that had just two radio stations - country and HAC (my family only used the HAC one). My childhood memories of that era (1997-2001-ish) are filled with whatever that HAC station was playing at the time. And HAC-ish stuff is what pop was playing back then anyway. However, when I became a chart follower and started looking at Hot 100 top 10's from that same time period, I was surprised to discover a vast amount of R&B/urban songs that I had never heard of (though urban radio is basically non-existent in Canada anyway, but that further proves my point). I just wasn't exposed to them. To say that those songs weren't hits would be silly. And I'm sure there's people who would've had the exact opposite experience.

Focus wasn't a BIG hit, but it still counts as a hit I mean besides it has more views on YouTube than some of her other songs that were more successful, and it still attained some first few successful weeks in the top 20. Plus it is pretty memorable, I mean given the video & the chorus

Rachel Platten's "Stand By You". It hit #37 but fell down quickly. I feel that unless she can get another hit she is going to be only remembered by general audiences for "Fight Song".

Right. It seems like op is of the "A song is a hit if and only if I personally like it" camp. Based on this thread and previous encounters.

Some idiot has been coming back over and over to a comment I posted on YouTube a while back for 4 months now trying to argue that Meghan Trainor is a one hit wonder. The absolute delusion...

And vice versa. For example. Far East Movement had a song called Live My Life debut at number 21 and fall off the charts right after. No one knows any other songs by him other than G6 and possibly Rocketeer, so how could Live My Life be a hit for them when no one even knows or remembers the song. Meanwhile Afrojack - Take Over Control peaked at number 41 but everyone knows that song very well and it is still played on radios and clubs often. Long story short, Take Over Control not reaching top 40 is a hit while Live My Life is not a hit while reaching top 40. So I am getting tired of peeps calling songs a hit if it reaches top 40 on Hot 100 charts and not a hit if it doesnt reach top 40. I've never heard of Afrojack Take Over but I do think that a song spending 1 week in the top 40 and then going away the next week, like many Glee and Voice songs, shouldn't count as a hit. Meanwhile, I'm sure there are maybe a few songs that peaked at #41 that deserve the title of hit.

Like I said in the Hot 100 thread, Let It Go. It's at #28, but it feels like a #80 peaking song
