Wow. I expected Prince's album sales to be higher. I don't see why, after all, for most people only Purple Rain is remembered, after that he had like one hit per album for a decade and then it was completely over in terms of singles (thankfully in the 2000s he had some decent critical and commercial success with albums). For someone as influential and prolific as he was, he only has a handful of songs that are part of pop culture "memory". I disagree (to an extent) that PR is all people really remember of Prince. I'm sure if you rattle off all of Prince's hits - and for that matter certain b-sides and album tracks - people will recall most or all of them. But without such prompting, ultimately the public conscious will gravitate to five or six of a person's biggest songs for any legend; beyond that the sheer volume of songs makes full recollection difficult for all but the most dedicated fans. It wasn't much different for Whitney, Michael, or Bowie either. By "albums" I was including the hits sets. I didn't expect Lovesexy to sell 200k, but I thought The Very Best Of would sell at least 300k, if not more. Well keep in mind that he has three sets for people to choose from, so his GH sales are a bit fragmented in that sense. Add all of their estimates together and you do get an overall 300-350k estimate.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7348373/prince-billboard-200-albums-chart-second-week?utm_source=twitterPrince Set for Another Big Week on Billboard 200 Albums Chart4/26/2016 by Keith Caulfield The late superstar could have five albums in the top 10. Industry forecasters expect Prince could place five albums in the top 10 of next week’s Billboard 200 chart, dated May 14. That tally will reflect the tracking week ending April 28 -- and the first full chart week of impact following his death on April 21. His current No. 1 album, The Very Best of Prince, could sell over 200,000 copies in the week ending April 28. Its total equivalent album unit figure could be over 350,000 -- thanks to the sales and streams of its well-known tracks (including the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry”). The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new May 14-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, May 1. Most of Prince’s album units are powered by sales and TEA, as the only streaming service that carries his catalog is Tidal. As previously reported, his music is selling very well in part because of its limited availability on streaming services and YouTube. And, as noted in Billboard magazine’s cover story about Prince in 2013, finding classic videos or performance footage of Prince on YouTube or anywhere else on the Web is difficult. "I have a team of female black lawyers who keep an eye on such transgressions," Prince said at the time. "And you know they’re sharp," he added with a laugh. As for Prince’s second-biggest album for the week, look for his classic Purple Rain soundtrack to possibly sell over 100,000 copies (with a total of 110,000-plus units). Two more greatest hits packages are also selling well, as The Hits/The B-Sides could sell 50,000 copies ( 70,000-plus units) and Ultimate may move 30,000 (and 35,000 units). Another album, 1999, might sell between 25,000 to 30,000 (with 35,000 total units). All five albums could feature in the new top 10, with The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain and The Hits/The B-Sides aiming for Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Possibly standing in the way of a second week at No. 1 for The Very Best of Prince is Beyonce’s new Lemonade album, which arrived on April 23. (It's too early to estimate how large the album's first week will be.) It's the follow-up to Beyonce's self-titled 2013 set, which launched atop the list with a whopping 617,000 copies sold in its first three days, according to Nielsen Music.

With so many exclusive releases, what's really the downside for Tidal? Is it much more expensive than other streaming platforms? Well, the tide has definitely shifted regarding TIDAL. Its popularity, usage level and favorability have all jumped greatly in the past few months. People aren't focusing on the "downside" the way they previously did. If this is how TIDAL launched - say, with complete, exclusive albums from Kanye, Rihanna, and Beyonce the day it was announced - there wouldn't have been nearly as much negativity. The reason it struggled out of the gate was that you had this tone-deaf, awkward press conference in which super rich celebrities were pitching a product that had no meaningful unique selling point or value for the end user. It simply came across as a money grab for the elite, ignoring the two things that actually mattered at the time: 1) what's in it for the user and 2) what's in it for the independent, "normal" artist? It's still that as it relates to small artists, but at least there's some clear *value* being created for customers. This "exclusive" thing is clearly resonating. That said, it will prove difficult to rely on "exclusives" as a long-term strategy if you don't have have ALL the exclusives. TIDAL is cool right now - it's the only place you can stream Beyonce - but what happens next week when you want to stream the Drake album? What if you want to listen to Taylor Swift? You'll apparently only be doing that if you have Apple Music, at least at first. And so, in that context, TIDAL suddenly becomes worthless -- and Apple suddenly becomes the place to be. And Apple and Spotify also have two things TIDAL doesn't have: wider user bases and higher degrees of familiarity. The whole thing is a catch 22, because exclusives are the best way to differentiate yourself (for all intents and purposes, the broader catalogues, sound quality, interfaces, etc are going to be a wash) but the quest for differentiation means competitive services will want to secure their own exclusives. That means you'll always be making a trade-off when you sign up for a streaming service. That's an interesting perspective. I had only read the comments here about Tidal and they were all negative, so it seemed to me like a really sh*tty platform. And now I've just subscribed and realized they have a broad catalogue, music videos, exclusive concerts, so I don't get all the complaining.

For review, this was MJ's albums on the Catalog chart after he died. It was 4 days of sales. Catalog albums were not allowed to chart on the Billboard 200 then. Pure album sales:

He should have had that number one album and those other top tens. It's one of the most unfair, unjust things in Billboard history.

HDD: Lemonade #1 - 475-525k, 575-640k SPS TOP 15 WITH THE GOOD HAIR Beyoncé looks to do 475k-525k in album sales for her new Lemonade set (Columbia), and a whopping 575k-640k SPS. Track sales fuel a TEA contribution to the latter total of 80k-90k, while exclusive Tidal streaming adds 20k-30k SEA (and holds freemium at bay). Her 2013 self-titled "sneak attack" set, you'll recall, bowed with 618k, so Lemonade appears on track to match for a comparable debut. Even Becky With the Good Hair has to bow down. Meanwhile, Prince will have another blockbuster week with multiple titles; colossal track sales largely accrue to The Very Best of compilation, which looks set to notch a quarter-mil in album sales and close to 400k SPS. Prince, too, is streaming exclusively on Tidal. Sales: *Beyoncé (Columbia) 475-525k Prince, The Very Best Of (Warner Bros.) 210-230kPrince, Purple Rain (Warner Bros.) 115-130kPrince, The Hits/B-Sides (Warner Bros.) 50-60kPrince, Ultimate (Warner Bros.) 33-38kPrince, 1999 (Warner Bros.) 27-30kChris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 24-27k *A$AP Ferg (RCA) 21-24k *NF (Sparrow/CCMG) 18-21k Adele (XL/Columbia) 18-21k The Lumineers (Dualtone) 15-17k Prince, Sign O' The Times (Warner Bros.) 15-17kSturgill Simpson (WMG) 14-16k Rihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 13-15k Hamilton (Uptown) 12-14k SPS: *Beyoncé (Columbia) 575-640k Prince, The Very Best Of (Warner Bros.) 365-390k Prince, Purple Rain (Warner Bros.) 130-150kPrince, The Hits/B-Sides (Warner Bros.) 75-85kRihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 44-49k Prince, Ultimate (Warner Bros.) 35-40k*A$AP Ferg (RCA) 33-38k Justin Bieber (Def Jam) 30-35k Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 29-33k Prince, 1999 (Warner Bros.) 28-32k

20-30K SEA = 30-45M in streams.
That's impressive for TIDAL-only, but it would also seemingly debunk TIDAL's "250M streams over 10 days" claim for Kanye.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=300814Wednesday, April 27, 2016 QUEEN BEY'S ALBUM MATCHUP Columbia's Beyoncé will once again top the chart with her latest release, Lemonade. Though it didn't have the sneak-attack jolt of her last album, 2013’s Beyoncé, Lemonade is currently projected to sell somewhere around 500k albums, 900k tracks and generate up to 45m streams. While those album sales represent a 19% decline over her previous first week, Lemonade is likely to come out ahead when revenue is compared, thanks to the addition of TEA and SEA. Beyoncé, the album, was initially bundled at iTunes without the ability to purchase individual tracks. Streaming at the time was still in its infancy in the US. Neither of these components contributed to first week sales. Lemonade, however, will benefit from both the sale of tracks and the album being available to stream at Tidal. Lemonade is also priced at $17.99, two dollars more than Beyoncé. Here’s the revenue breakdown. Beyoncé sold approximately 618k in its first four days of release at $15.99. Assuming the standard 70/30 split for digital albums, Beyoncé generated $6.9m in revenue. Lemonade, selling at $17.99 and projecting to 500k, will generate $6.3m in sales. Lemonade, however, has the two additional revenue, um, streams. 900k in track sales will generate $810k in revenue at 90 cents per track. Tidal is expected to generate up to 45m streams for additional revenue of up to $250k. This gives Lemonade a total of $7.36m in revenue in its first four days, which will beat Beyoncé by nearly $400k.

Prince with potentially 5 top ten albums. Is that a record for the BB200? (Has that already been asked and answered?)

I think the closest comparison should be MJ who occupied top 3 on comprehensive albums In addition, by the time MJ's album sales peaked (in the 3rd full week after his death; Billboard issue dated July 25, 2009 with 1.1 million albums sold that week), he occupied 6 of the Top 10 Comprehensive Album positions:

^Such a shame they waited so long to update the chart rules. Although even now it wouldn't be apples to apples since SPS came along. The nature of records... it's hard to compare when the rules and the industry change so much.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=300809It should be noted that Hits hasn't adjusted its overall sales + tracks + streams projection, so I guess it's still maintaining confidence in the 20-30K SEA figure it originally reported?

BERTRAND GUAY/AFP/GETTY IMAGES Prince’s albums and songs have sold over 4 million copies in the U.S. since his death on April 21, according to Nielsen Music. That sum combines his sales on April 21 (239,000 albums and 1.034 million song downloads), along with initial sales reports for the days of April 22-27 (496,000 albums and 2.24 million songs). In the tracking week before his death, Prince’s music sold comparably little: just 5,000 albums and 14,000 song downloads in the week ending April 15. Nielsen Music’s latest sales tracking week ends on April 28, and Billboard is scheduled to report the newest official weekly sales data beginning on Sunday, May 1. The top 10 of the new Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 14, reflecting data for the week ending April 28) is set to be revealed on May 1. A day later, news about the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart will be announced.
6 again the next week too in 8/1
The Beatles had 5 a couple months later on 8/26

5 prince albums all sold between 8000-9000 units . Is there any reasoning for this ? Seems a bit strange

Not to trivialize/reduce Prince's death to chart stats but I'm glad timing worked out for him to get a week in at #1 before Beyonce & Drake.

I think part of what helped MJ is that memorial service that was aired. Is there one happening for Prince?
