I think if we're going to have these threads every week, everyone who wants to participate in the thread should reserve a spot and update it every time they want to change something and also put the day (possibly time as well) so we don't have to go digging in pages to find someone's predictions. It's easier and keeps the thread a little bit more clean.

The entire reason this thread came about is because some posters suggested elsewhere having two separate Hot 100 threads, and I guess someone figured if there was a thread made specifically for predictions that would adequately sequester a certain small group of posters in one area and restore the main thread to its 'normal' state. Unfortunately that isn't working because you guys are taking the idea of a thread named 'predictions' to the exact letter and only using it for predictions. Meanwhile the 'main' hot 100 thread is still being hijacked with conversation that a sizable number of regular posters have long grown tired of (and also some predictions still being snuck in there because certain alluded-to posters refuse to be quarantined), and then the hijacking gets hijacked by people complaining about what a terrible mess the hot 100 threads have become. Also, some posters are completely incapable of distinguishing between serious comments and obvious satire, or between what they think is trolling and what is really throwing their behavior back in their faces in an as-yet unsuccessful attempt to show how annoying their posting behavior is to others. I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that there is a clear barrier in communicative skills that is probably too high to overcome. I suggest nixing the prediction thread completely. You guys can have the main thread with a no-complaints-allowed guarantee, and then there can be a side thread for anyone who doesn't like the conversation that typically goes on there. This may or may not come across as mean but I'd rather cut to the chase than watch this weak-willed, half-assed attempt at...whatever the hell was being attempted and then abandoned. As a final note, the true crux of the issue is that just because you aren't technically breaking any rules doesn't mean what you're doing is ok. When one small group of posters is able to take over an area of the board to the extent that it isn't even readable half the time, let alone enjoyable, for the majority of other people, that is a serious problem - and frankly self-centered as hell to continue that behavior even as you realize you're getting on other people's nerves with it. That's the definition of trolling! I used to be a staff member and this is one time where I wonder if staff really needs me again to put an e-boot up people's virtual asses and not give a damn if I came across as a bitch for it, because it does not make any sense that this has managed to fester. Yeah...I do want to say, just for the record, that I tend to curse a lot, but that is just because I have a potty mouth, so I hope you realize I don't mean to indicate any anger or vitriol at you specifically or really even in general. But I am frustrated with the situation. I often find myself just scrolling until I see a bunch of colors so I can look at MTS's airplay chart and then exit again. I have too often seen someone say 'if you don't like a post it only takes 0.0000002 seconds to scroll!' but this misses the point - I scroll past so much now that I might as well not enter the thread, and I'm not the only one. For avid chart watchers, having a chart thread that you don't want to post in or even look at any more is a bit painful. The predictions in themselves aren't a terrible thing (I don't really know how one has a discussion about an upcoming chart week without having a prediction of some sort) but the sheer amount of them + the hyper-focus on how many exact positions a person gets correct has made the Hot 100 thread feel more like the Games forum, and the content in between those predictions was veering to off-topic and/or inane territory. There are specific things I could nitpick, but this is the overall issue - there is just a huge, unbridgeable gap between what different posters consider to be 'valuable' conversation. I don't know what the solution is to that. Even the side-thread proposal I mentioned is tricky, because I don't want to reach a point where we are saying, "Ok, you, you, and you, go to this thread; but you're not allowed in this one." That's prohibitively difficult to police...and besides, who gets to decide which posters can and can't be somewhere? Do we put new posters in a sorting hat? It will become arbitrary. I sort of like the idea of creating one 'general Hot 100 discussion' thread with some specific rules to keep it on track, but I need to think on it more. |
