Level with me here, gh3ruls. Gather round by the campfire while this fresh pot of piping hot oolong steeps to perfection. Perch yourselves hither, so that you too can stay woker than the the lessers.
I come to you with a question: did Ariana Grande save R&B? Now, that might be bold to admit for some, but rest assured I come bearing nothing but answers and the truth. To disagree with any of the facts presented to you today is nothing short of willful ignorance and SEXISM. Back to the matter at hand, I'll answer this question you've all been racking your brains over: yes, Ariana Grande did save R&B. Let me begin by asking you another question to get those rusty gears going.
Name ONE artist who was achieving consistent success with the genre on CHR before her? You can't. You can try, but you're wrong. Ariana paved the way for artists like The Weeknd and Macklemore to achieve success within the genre on mainstream formats that matter. Justin Timberlake couldn't even get a hit on the format before Yours Truly's release. Her originality and vocal talents that extend far beyond anyone who ever was or ever will be was the driving force behind the R&B renaissance happening on your local CHR station RIGHT NOW. Several top tens later, including current game-changer 'Dangerous Woman', and there are no signs of Ariana's impact letting up anytime soon; but it was her ability to hit the ground running that single-handedly saved R&B. Repeat that to yourself, aloud. Let it sink in, because it's true.
I encourage you all to discuss this in a civilized manner. Please, no personal attacks. Any disagreements amongst yourselves should be cordial. Any disagreements with the above will be disregarded, as you are factually incorrect.
Discuss.

Not really, R&B isn't nearly as dominant as it was before in the '00s. Also, she still has to take influence from EDM, hip-hop, and general pop music in order for her music to get played. The type of R&B that was popular back then is completely different than what we have now.

I think she helped to bring it back and reintroduce it.
A number of her singles have also been Dance oriented so there's that.

Aren't you coming off as kind of arrogant by telling us that we are factually incorrect? As a long-time listener of R&B, no I don't think Ariana saved the genre. First of all, Ariana is primarily a pop singer with R&B influenced sounds in her songs, it's not really the same thing as being a pure R&B artist. And no, this has nothing to with her race, gender or even the fact that she came from a kids' tv show. Now I'll say that there have been more R&B inspired songs since she came around and she did pave the way for The Weeknd to have his breakout success last year, but she was just part of a trending movement as music was starting to move away from dance pop into different styles, including R&B. Also, Justin was having success with his R&B-type hits "Suit and Tie" and "Mirrors" on the radio before Ariana released her debut single "The Way", so that kind of disputes your point. Also, Macklemore is a rapper, not an R&B artist, and he released "Thrift Shop" in 2012 and "Can't Hold Us" before her debut single came out. "Dangerous Woman" isn't exactly game-changing considering it hasn't exactly lit up the charts and barely peaked in the top 10, I will say though that it sounds different than most other songs on the radio. I'd be more impressed if we actually heard more pure R&B singers other than The Weeknd consistently crossing over than pop stars doing R&B sounds. But even then, I wouldn't say "Ariana was the one that did all that". As far as her sticking around, that depends on how the audience feels about her in the long term. Her two recent singles didn't exactly take over the world and to me she seems more like a fad than a megastar that will be around for a long time. But then again, she might actually have a long and fruitful career full of chart sucess and maybe reach legendary status, who knows? I'm glad R&B sounds have returned to radio, but I can't really say that she was single-handedly responsable for that.

The type of R&B that was popular back then is completely different than what we have now. R&B has been hugely popular since the 1950's, during the Motown days, it's just now that it isn't crossing over anymore for some reason. That being said, there have been several R&B sounding songs that have been getting popular the past 2 or 3 years, and then there's the success of The Weeknd. Ariana, however, didn't really usher in that movement. But at the same time, you're right, R&B's still not as big as it was back in those days.

The type of R&B that was popular back then is completely different than what we have now. Sweetie. Before Ms. Grande, R&B was dying. It was dead. Dust. R&B was given new life when 'The Way', a MULTIPLATINUM hit, was released to radio. If it wasn't popular before, then she brought it back. Let me spell that out for you, because you're clearly confused: Ariana Grande took the R&B sound that was popular back then and made it right now. Ergo, she saved R&B. Easy as ABC 123. Aren't you coming off as kind of arrogant by telling us that we are factually incorrect? No, I'm coming across as honest. HUGE difference. They aren't even synonyms. This is the most stupidest thread of all time? Ariana Grande save R&B? My ass she did. If anything she is making it worse. I provide actual statistics and you respond with a mere fallacy to dismiss the facts that I have spoon fed to you, and you claim that I am making a inpertintent thread?

Ariana Grande does not even make her own songs. She samples older songs.

Ariana Grande does not even make her own songs. This was the first point, and it was wrong. End of. *pony brush*

Please stay on topic. This thread is about talent and success, not mediocrity and what it likes and dislikes.

...saving R&B? F**k that. Legendariana is out there saving music. #BOWDOWN Focus did not save anything. Wrong again! Ariana Grande saved Jamie Foxx's career when she featured his vocals on her record breaking, GLOBAL hit, 'Focus'. Yes, you too can google that. Let me remind you that Mr. Foxx is an R&B artist. Remember R&B? That genre she also saved?

Jamie Foxx was not even featured in it. So does not count. Jamie Foxx still has not made any song after that - that has become a hit.

No it will not. Jamie Foxxes last song You Changed me did not even do crap. This next one wont either. I doubt anyone else even knows that it was Jamie Foxx with the vocals.

Idk if pantomiming Mariah constitutes as saving r&b but I do know that Ariana Grande was singularly responsible for legalizing (and inventing) gay marriage on her very own birthday. What kind of social justice stunt queen!

But it's not a full-fledged example. Yeah, her music is '90s inspired but it also takes influence from EDM. It sounds nothing like acts from the '90s and '00s in terms of production.
