Amazing performance, but I’m still not *entirely* on board with the idea of it being single #2. I don’t see it faring especially well at radio. But, then again, maybe they don’t really care about that and are just trying to highlight the album’s highest of high points, in which case “Heat” would be a stellar choice. If they’re looking for potential radio smashes, though, then I’d lean closer to “Didn’t I,” the title track, or “Whole Lotta Woman.”
My brain is still stuck in “Well that’s not radio-friendly”-mode with Kelly and I have to keep reminding myself that the handling of this album is not at all like any others of hers.

It was either Heat or Medicine for me so I'm here for this.

Heat is my definite preference over Medicine. I'd take "Florence & The Machine meets Bruno Mars" as a better blueprint for radio than "Mariah's second album from 1991". This performance is blazing! Agree with getonthebus whereas Medicine just sort of builds and peaks halfway through. Whereas Heat, to use a conflicting metaphor, snowballs and gets bigger and bigger as the song goes on.

Another couple points on the "Heat" side: it will likely get the lion share of any remaining promo for the era, just given the timing and how these things usually work. Not only has "Heat" seemed to translate better live, it is both easier for her to sing and easier for her to make more vocally dazzling or not, depending on how she's feeling. Medicine has higher high notes and lower low notes built into the melody, so deviating from that will take more away from the song than it would with "Heat" (that said, her vocal performances have only been getting better as the year progressed, so this isn't a huge concern).
More importantly, I think "Heat" lends itself to commercial use, which I think is the most sure-fire way for Kelly (or anyone) to expose people to the song and get them to buy/stream it. There's more of a "stars align" requirement for a promo performance to really launch a song than a commercial that's everywhere, all the time. Not saying this a guarantee either, of course, or that she'll magically have a commercial lined up, but I can see "Heat" serving as the promo song for a number of shows and movies, even if it doesn't get an actual commercial treatment like "Stronger" did.

While I don't think anything on the album is sure-fire smash (not a bad thing, just a fact), I have this terrible fear that if Medicine was released, it'd be an Invincible-sized flop. Like, not even able to break the Top 100 on iTunes after a notable TV performance. I like the song enough, but I never saw it as single material - mostly due to it's lack of a sonic/melodic arc. It's very much the same-y from beginning to end. It's going to be an uphill battle single-wise after the lukewarm reception of LSS - Medicine hasn't shown any metrics (iTunes, Spotify, YouTube) since album release to indicate it'd do well as the 2nd single. It's solidly middle of the pack.
If Medicine is indeed released, I'd love to be proven wrong :) But if it's between these two I'm #TeamHeat

That performance of Heat is absolute confirmation that it SHOULD be the next single. Medicine is good and all but if Heat doesn’t do anything then neither would Medicine. It’s so instant and she performs the hell out of it. I really really hope that Medicine is not the next single and Kelly only mentioned it being in the running but I don’t know if that’s been verified/confirmed since.

Is Kelly doing her Christmas show in Nashville this year? Is it getting lost in the album promo? Would be a shame because it’s such an amazing show and I was hoping it would happen every year.

Warner has put out feelers for those tracks or Kelly has promoted them with high profile performances, yet they haven't piqued much public interest yet as far as sales and streaming go, which may indicate that they're not the right choice for the second single. The second single is really important to get right. As for the songs not yet promoted, YouTube shows "I Don't Think About You" leading with "Medicine" following closely behind. I haven't checked Spotify or iTunes data.

After seeing that performance I think I am back on team Heat. The first few seconds get me positively giddy. And she CRUSHED it. I think it's very accessible too. If Medicine were a hit I think it would take some time to catch on. I'm too anxious and need more immediate gratification.

Guys sorry to double post but can anyone remember THIS much debate on a single for her? The closest I can think of is the follow-up to Stronger or mmmmaybe the follow-up to MLWSWY. I am not counting BTHE/WA or AG/Cry which were more internal debates.

I am not counting BTHE/WA or AG/Cry which were more internal debates. The biggest single debate I remember here was actually what should follow Dark Side, because Stronger was clearly the only guaranteed hit on the album (but Dark Side had a lot of support and seemed destined to be her new SUBG-BTHE until the gods ruined it for no good reason). Also there were plenty of people pissed about PBP getting released over Take You High or Nostalgic or whatever other future flop uptempo people were hoping for. Proudly team Piece By Piece from the start. 💁🏼♂️

Well, I have lived 37 years on this Earth, so...it's been real, y'all. I want that performance of the best song on Kelly's best album to be the last thing I see and hear.

So tonight she introduced Medicine by saying it was in the running to be the final song.
Honestly after seeing it and Heat performed live in the same show, it has to be Heat. There are slight live tweaks to Heat that mad either even more impactful life while Medicine felt flat.
I think that Medicine is a better song overall, but Heat is a better single. Medicine will need a radio remix and live arrangement fixes to be viable. It's the type of song that benefits from a fresh interpretation each performance, since it has so many unique pieces to move around and adjust. If they choose Medicine, they need to commit to it.
EDIT: Just want to add, as someone who as seen her every tour since 2 Worlds 2 Voices, this was the best she’s sounded vocally, and the best banter I’ve seen. (I had a post-cold show on the Stronger Honda Tour and a post pregnancy announcement PxP show)

Heat > Medicine all day. But as long as they go at least 4 singles deep regardless, I’ll be satisfied with either.

Medicine was THE song from the album that wowed me at first listen.
Heat was a quick grower however, and is sliiiightly above Medicine on my current list of faves from MoL.
As much as I love Heat, what worries me is that the vibe it gives me is too close to Love So Soft, which I love, but wasn't received as well as I hoped it would be.
My vote goes to Medicine. The appeal to casual fans, the vocals, the hook, I think this song's got it all. After they release this smash they can proceed to Heat then Meaning of Life, IDTAY, Didn't I, or WYCTL.

I think "Heat" and "Medicine" are pretty even. I lean towards the one that will guarantee stronger live performances. Is there a high quality performance of "Medicine" out there yet?
I'm still team "MOL" for the next single. I think she needs to cater to Hot AC hardcore and "Heat" is too aggressive/busy compared to what's currently doing well there. If "LSS" didn't play well to Hot AC audiences, I don't think "Heat" is going to fare much better.

For whatever it’s worth (probably nothing), but my six year old kid gets his life to Medicine (knows all the words and everything) and is indifferent to Heat. Also, these Cracker Barrel performances are simply high quality and well put together. Heat’s was amazing, but not as much as MOL’s. I bet if Medicine gets one we’ll all be losing it over that too.

I'm here for "Medicine" being the second single. The way she sings "How does it feel to know I'm better off without you playin' games around my head a thousand times, I almost damn near lost my mind" makes me lose it.

This is Medicine from the Las Vegas concert the other night, and i guess Lester (drummer) sang the deep male voice part, but you could hardly hear him. Maybe you could hear him better live, but not so much on this recording. To me, the song doesn't translate as well live as the studio recording does. My vote for second single would be HEAT!!

Medicine is more similar to Love So Soft than Heat is. Heat is far more driving, has more tempo, a poppier structure, has more momentum, is more similar to songs of artists who've had hits more recently, its hook relies less on vocal effects etc.

As I was listening to IDTAY on my way to work today, I thought it would be a great song to highlight domestic abuse.
If you listen to the song as if its a story of a woman finding the courage to leave her abusive husband....it really works with the song.
It could have a really powerful video, kinda like Martina McBride's abuse anthems Independence Day and Broken Wing.
The song is very powerful, if you think of it through that story perspective.

I am most definitely team Medicine. I know you guys are gonna drag me (in this bitch) but I do NOT hear a hit in Heat at all. It's like a generic Neon Trees/Kings of Leon/Imagine Dragons song that you hear on WPLJ while you're at the dentist. Her vocals on the recording are also a bit hoarse at times which is not how I like my Kelly.
Also, we all know Kelly's performances of a song tend to improve the more she does them - feeling like she's done Heat more, and thus we have that amazing performance. I also don't think it's fair to compare a fan made video of Medicine at a concert to a highly produced, well-produced staged performance of Heat, coming to the conclusion that the latter translates better live. Let's see Medicine get that kind of production and attention and then decide which translates better live.
Medicine - WYCTL - Go High is my holy trinity of singles from this era.
Ok go ahead and pull a Kandi on me.

I dunno... I just think she's not selling her uptempos.... if she's just gonna stand there with the mic and bounce around, then she's not really gonna captivate anyone... the vocals really only get impressive when she reaches the end (Love so Soft, Medicine).... and by then, you've just kinda lost interest.
I think Heat is the better live performance and a better showcase of her vocals.
Though, I still hold Don't You Pretend and Cruel would be the FAR stronger choices for singles at this point if all we expect her to do is stand there and wail on her microphone.
