I just found out that Faith Hill is actually not a group. I would have never thought that this is an actual name of a person.

I actually didn't know La Roux wasn't one person until now lmao
I thought Aqualung was a band or atleast duo his first few singles. Solo acts with names like this completely throw me off.

I presume that most people used to think that Mr Big ("To be with you") was just one guy, what band names themselves "Mr."?!

Dragonette seem to enjoy playing into the misconception that it's just Martina.
AlunaGeorge do this too with Aluna.

Secondhand Serenade sounded like a band to me at first.

I used to think Maroon 5 was a band... Well, if you think of them as a backup band ("Adam Levine and the Maroon 5") then you might be right. Otherwise they've really been the Maroon 6 for the last few years.

Didn't know Migos were a group until just yesterday. Oh so that's why the third(?) verse in BaB sounds like it's done by someone else that's not Lil Uzi Vert!

Surprised no one mentioned Sade yet. Even the Grammys are confused. They have nominated Sade in Solo and Group categories. Nine Inch Nails are a band according to Wikipedia but the Grammys nominated them in a solo category in the 90s.

Is Panic! At the Disco technically a band anymore? Brendan is the only official member now, the rest are just a touring band.

Is Panic! At the Disco technically a band anymore? Brendan is the only official member now, the rest are just a touring band. Technically P!ATD is really a solo act by now, as Brendon Urie is the only official member in terms of writing, recording, etc. Of the current group, bassist Dallon Weekes used to be a full fledged member but while "Death of a Bachelor" was in progress he said that he was "not contributing creatively anymore", though he remains part of the tour band. This status is somewhat amorphous, as it's basically whatever Brendon says it is. Should one or more of the three other touring members, which lineup has been consistent for several years, back him up in the studio and/or help compose something then maybe that makes them a full-fledged band (or duo) again?

Wilson Phillips. I used to think it was one person until I saw that there are 3 of them when I first saw the video for Hold On. Same problem I had with for example Buffalo Springfield. Makes you think it's a surname.
Also Jesus Jones. I found out that just right now, I googled them while I was writing this post. I also thought this was just a stage name for one person.

Bands I Thought Were Single Artists: Cascada Lukas Graham Bon Iver Gnarls Barkley Santana Rae Sremmurd Migos (learned this like 1 week ago) Marian Hill Artists I Thought Were Bands: Owl City The Ready Set Passenger Machine Gun Kelly - legit thought this was a rock band until I heard Bad Things Ones I Learned Thanks to This Thread: Five for Fighting Marilyn Manson went between band and solo Sade, and honestly this one shocks me the most AlunaGeorge Secondhand Serenade I just found out that Faith Hill is actually not a group. I would have never thought that this is an actual name of a person. Lol, wut? I can understand mistaking it for a band name because it does also sound like the name of a literal hill that band just adopted, like Linkin Park, but Faith and Hill are super common first and last names as well. Also, on a slightly related note, I used to think twenty one pilots had 3 guys and that Jess Glynne was the Asian girl from the "Rather Be" music video.

Surprised no one mentioned Sade yet. Me too, and on the flipside surprised no one has mentioned Blondie.

surprised no one has mentioned Blondie. Thank you! Another obvious example from my childhood. Every time "Heart Of Glass" came on the radio I thought it was just one female singer.

During The E.N.D. era, I thought the Black Eyed Peas had become a duo until Taboo and apl.de.ap showed up to dance a little for TV performances.

I thought Major Lazer was a person and that Diplo had no relation. Also, I thought Rae Sremmurd and Lukas Graham were people (Rae Sremmurd actually up until Black Beatles I thought was one person lmao) and twenty one pilots was a 21 person group as well as Chainsmokers as like a 4 or 5 person group (with a person that did the vocals for Selfie part of the group lol. Didn't realize they were 2 people until Roses lmao) I also thought PSY, DRAM, and ROZES were groups instead of people.
I just learned that AlunaGeorge and Migos were people lol.
Also somewhat related When I first heard Lil Uzi Vert, I thought it was some kind of new name somebody came up with for some kind of light green because of the "vert" part. But then I figured it out. Lol rip. Also when Hide Away first came out and I heard it for the first time in late summer 2015, I thought Anna Kendrick sang it instead of a new artist Daya I would become a fan of, especially with Pitch Perfect 2 craze around the same time I first heard it lol.

Surprised that nobody mentioned Alice Cooper, which was/is both. Originally it was the name of a band led by Vincent Furnier, then he changed his name legally to Alice Cooper. Eventually the band disbanded and ever since he's kept the stage and legal name for himself.

LOLOLOLOL at the people who thought Roxette was just one person. Most of their big hits have vocals from both members.
I'm also loling at those who didn't know about Marina & the Diamonds, but I understand more why people thought she was a band.

I remember that around 2011-2012 when I first started to hear his songs on the radio, I used to think that Flo Rida was a group. Today I have no idea how I could have mistaken him for a group but I think that was mostly because of the name, it didn't sound like one person's stage name to me.

For a while I thought that Taco, the guy who sings 1983 version of Puttin On The Ritz was a band. It turns out that not only isn't he a band, but Taco is also his real first name.
