{If you want to be tagged/not tagged lmk, I just grabbed a bunch of names from a couple of recent rankdowns and the queue thread}
The rankdown for #2 Hot 100 hits is now open! Here are the songs:
This rankdown will have 75 songs in it, but as you can see, there are only 50 songs listed. That's because this rankdown is a little bit different:
In an effort to narrow things down I chose to focus only on #2 hits from the past 25 years, but even after that, approximately 143 songs have peaked at #2 since 1993. So I chose two songs from each year except for 2017 (because only one song has peaked at #2 so far this year) and 2006 (surely you guys won't really miss Smack That, and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy was omitted because no artist appears on my list more than once in any form). I filled in with extra songs from 1997, 1999, and 2005 to keep it an even 50.
But maybe you DO miss Smack That, and you think this is a terrible injustice. Maybe you think 1997 had some really amazing songs that peaked at #2, and more than three of them deserve some attention. Maybe you noticed that I left out the Big 5 (Mariah/Whitney/Celine/Madonna/Janet) and think that's not fair. Or maybe you're just mad because I told you in advance that 7 Years and Anaconda can kiss my ass. This is how we will make amends:
1. You will send me a rankdown from your most favorite (1) to your least favorite. The 50 songs listed above must ALL be included in your rankdown for your submission to be accepted. You are more than free to only rank those 50 songs and be done with it, but step two might interest you a bit more.
2a. OPTIONAL: You can pick anywhere from one to twenty-five other songs that peaked at #2 in the eligible time frame. These are called your free picks. You will rank them along with the other 50 songs, so each song will receive a set number of points based on its rank. #1 ranks will receive 75 points, #75 ranks will receive 1 point. Note that due to the requirement that your ranks be consecutively numbered (rule 3), #50 ranks will receive 26 points even if you only rank 50 songs.
2b. Any free pick you choose must be ranked in the top half of your rankdown (#37 or higher). I do not claim to have picked the absolute best 50 songs available, but if you're going to add something to what I did choose it should be a song you really like!
2c. You have twenty-five bonus points that you may give to your free picks to try to boost them up the chart. (This is a change from the previous setup: you don't have to have unused free picks to use bonus points.) Bonus points will help boost your free picks, but they also are a show of how much a song is truly loved, so use them wisely! If you are ranking something at #1 anyway it might not need an extra 10 points on top of the 75 you just gave it, unless you know it's a song that not too many people use. OTOH if you have another free pick that you like just as well as your #1 song, you can essentially game the system and give it the equivalent of a #1 score by ranking it #10 (65 points) and then adding on ten bonus points.
2d. You may not give any free pick more than 10 bonus points, but other than that limit, you may spread your points out however you wish - stack points on top of a couple of songs, or give one point each to all twenty-five free picks. You are not required to use all twenty-five free picks, nor are you required to use all twenty-five bonus points.
3. Your ranks must be consecutively numbered; that is, you can't rank songs 1 through 49, then leave spaces #50 - 74 blank just to rank a song #75. If you hate something *that* much, use the free picks to push it down. (You have over 90 other options, after all!)
4. Feel free to mention suggestions in this thread to encourage people to submit one of your faves, or create a group PM with other people to try to rig things for your favorite song to in lol. I don't care!
5. Once the rankdown is closed to submissions I'll tally everything up and reveal the 75 songs with the highest number of points. Final rank will be calculated using an inverse point system.
6. The deadline is June 25, 2017 at 11:59 pm CDT. If at any time before the close of the rankdown you need to make changes, you can do so in the PM you sent me.
Here is a brief example of how ranking works in this rankdown:
I'm a deranged Usher stan so I want to use three free picks to add My Way, I Need a Girl Part I, and We Are the World 25 for Haiti (what? he was on it) to my rankdown. I am not interested in anything else, so I am going to give all my bonus points to these three songs. I really want to give My Way all of my extra points, but the host is an a$$hole who set a limit, so I choose to rank my songs like so:
1. Usher - You Make Me Wanna
2. Usher - My Way (+10)
3. P. Diddy f. Usher and Loon - I Need a Girl Part I (+10)
4. We Are the World 25 for Haiti (+5)
5. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone
6. Etc., etc. The last song in my submission will have a ranking of #53.
Hopefully that is very straightforward and interests you guys in participating in this rankdown, but if you have any questions or need me to clarify anything, just ask!
Here are the Spotify playlists with all the eligible songs.
