Let's be real. He couldn't even run a lemonade stand properly much less a massive record label. This is a good thing.

LA Reid is a legend and has been responsible for some amazing sh*t over the past 30 years. That being said, he's clearly lost touch, it happens. Plus the music industry is just so damn different now, he's too much of a traditionalist to navigate it. He should back away and put his talents to a better use. He doesn't need to pull a Clive Davis and stick around for decades too long.

Yeah, he's had some epic moments but he's been messy for over a decade now. He makes way too many mistakes for way too many artists, in my opinion.

It's kind of weird that he left when Epic Records is on a big up-swing currently.

He is notoriously difficult to work for/with. I can just imagine him being a real pain and not delivering results. He should refocus his talents on something else.

I've never forgiven him for the mess that was him becoming head of Arista after Clive Davis in 01-03. So many careers derailed, some temporarily, some permanently. Also, how many of his artists in the 90s had contracts where they ended up filing for bankruptcy...TLC, Toni Braxton... that does not speak well as an executive. And Mariah stans, remember he constantly pushed for "Say Something" from TEOM but thankfully was vetoed for better single choices each time.

I blame him for JUST WHITNEY, 3D, MORE THAN A WOMAN. Whether it was material, promotion or both.

^I think it was mostly promotion.
MTAW and 3D especially had material that fit in well with Pop, Urban, and Rhythmic at the time. Whitney's personal image was in the toilet, but I thought One Of Those Days would've done better than it did, considering how fun it is.
Also, I still for the life of me don't know how "Trouble" from Try This flopped, along with the average performance of the Under My Skin singles, and finally leaving Kelis in a lurch just as "Milkshake" was blowing up.

And Mariah stans, remember he constantly pushed for "Say Something" from TEOM but thankfully was vetoed for better single choices each time. He was also the one who sent her back in the studio where she came up with the first 3 singles, so it more than evens out in that case. Honestly, if he's gung ho about mega budgets and uber control, he's better off doing film or TV production these days. Best of luck to him.

If they're letting him go now, when Epic is picking up a bit, I am inclined to think it is because the higher-ups know that someone else is responsible for these recent wins, and there's no point in letting LA stick around to incorrectly receive the credit. How many times has he been fired now? He needs to retire. It feels like he gets fired every other year, but now that I think about it hasn't it only been twice? - He and Babyface sold their shares in LaFace off to BMG when he got hired to head Arista - he was fired from Arista, then went to Def Jam - he was recruited from Def Jam to head Epic when Sony and Universal started playing musical chairs with their execs - he's been fired from Epic Maybe he's just especially cursed when it comes to Sony, but I've always said he was better at launching talent than nurturing talent. Arista fell apart on his watch because he had to switch from pushing new-ish acts to new heights to trying to maintain a roster full of already-successful artists, and he didn't know how to make the adjustment. He's also hit-or-miss when it comes to scouting so he wasn't bringing in reliable new talent at a fast enough rate to make up for the losses either. Honestly this probably would have eventually happened with all the most popular artists on LaFace too, but he went to Arista, where he got to fail on a much larger scale. I'm trying to think of what wins he had while he was at Def Jam and I'm kind of stuck at the hunch that Mariah and Rihanna's star power might have obfuscated his mediocrity there. Say Something aside, the reason he worked so well for Mariah was because TEOM was a huge comeback project and he got to approach it in a way that suited his strengths. Rihanna is the industry version of a miracle baby - no one seems to have an adequate explanation for how she managed to survive and thrive with the total dust they were paying her at first. There was the hip-hop side but I didn't get a strong sense of involvement from him there. Oh, and let's not forget that he rejected Gaga and crossed Patti during this time. I don't want to take away from his legacy because it is certainly a great one, but it's definitely time for him to go chill at the country club with the other retirees.

It's so funny he gets so much criticism here based off of his time at Arista, but he revived Mariahs's career at Def Jam when she was on her way to irrelevancy and he has done a great job with his acts at epic over the last couple of years. His track record is actually a lot better than majority of these executives especially if u look at the length of time he has been around.

No he was properly credited with his assist with Mariah but honestly he hasn't done much and his track record with Arista was either shoddy or despicable depending on who you believe. The Emancipation of Mimi was a perfect storm at the right time and it was bigger than LA or Mimi it was just a moment so I'm not sure he can get too much credit if that's all he has done really well.

MTE. The immediate thing that pops into my head is that if that weren't a thing then all of the talk above about his being such a not-so-great exec in recent years wouldn't mean squat because absolutely none of it speaks to the real reason he's being fired now. Just...super.

Ngl I thought I would click that article and the gender of the victim would be a male. I'm glad more women are coming out and not standing for harassment anymore and excusing it as "boys are creepy/boys will be boys". LA Reid stays despicable if this is true.

I started to type something but I'm having one of those 'whoa, there's more to unpack here than I expected' moments so I will just say 1) welp. and 2) I'm gonna go listen to Meghan Trainor's No and chew on the story behind that song for a bit.
