"Birthday Cake" is trashy but still catchy af. I didn't rank it THAT high but I can see mine being one of the 3-5 highest rankings.

I gotta reacquaint myself with some songs. It should take me about an hour but whatever.. ETA: I'm flying through. This should take me only until 12:30 probs...if that's fine Libra? Technically I shouldn't accept...but I will. :) At this current stage, I'm not entirely convinced that a single additional list will be enough to change the final major outcome - but who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That being said, this Rankdown is now CLOSED to submissions. So if you didn't get yours in by now, you will be a spectator to the proceedings. A heads-up to everyone: I have 13 lists yet to process. I will also be quite busy most of the rest of today, so I probably won't be able to start knocking those out until tomorrow. Counting James's list, this will give us 43 participants. I also likely won't be able to start the reveal until next weekend at least, so...in the meantime, let's build some suspense with a handy survey! :) Feel free to take the time and answer these questions: 1) Which song do you predict will be #100? 2) Which song do you predict will have the lowest peak ranking? (I.E. Nobody has it ranked higher than...something like #50.) 3) Which song do you predict will have the most #1 rankings? 4) Do you think that the song you picked for (3) will also be the #1 song in this Rankdown? 5) Guess the number of points that song #100 will end up with. 6) Guess the number of points that the #1 song will end up with.

I sent my list yesterday. I'm not expecting myself to do good at all in this Rankdown as I feel like some of my Top 10's will be out fairly early in the game. Country was decent this year, most of the country songs were alright except 3 songs that are great and in my Top 40. Urban music was really inconsistent, as there are 4 Urban songs in my bottom 10 and 3 in my Top 20 (2 in Top 10).
Looking forward to the results :)
Edit: Oh wow Libra posted just a second before me lol.
1) Which song do you predict will be #100? Rack City. I can also see Birthday Cake/Red Solo Cup/Cashin' Out at #100. 2) Which song do you predict will have the lowest peak ranking? (I.E. Nobody has it ranked higher than...something like #50.) I expect the songs I pointed at #1 to have some high ranks. I'm gonna go with Red Solo Cup but there are plenty of options. 3) Which song do you predict will have the most #1 rankings? Somebody That I Used to Know/Lights/Call Me Maybe. 4) Do you think that the song you picked for (3) will also be the #1 song in this Rankdown? I have a feeling that Rolling In The Deep is going to win this Rankdown and that most people won't rank it #1 cause it already won the 2011 Rankdown. 5) Guess the number of points that song #100 will end up with. If we're doing Inverse then around 650 Points? 6) Guess the number of points that the #1 song will end up with. Around 3500 Points.

1. Hopefully Red Solo Cup or Bday Cake and not Rack City. 2. Probably Red Solo Cup. 3. Lights, Call Me Maybe, or STIUTK. 4. Hell no, and I will probably lose my number 1 in bottom 20, hopefully not bottom 10 and hopefully it pulls a miracle and escapes bottom 20.
Idk for 5 and 6. Inverse points or Regular points?

1) Birthday Cake. Next. 2) Red Solo Cup, probably, but I don't think as many people hate it as some think. Might outperform expectations. 3) Lights or CMM 4) Maybe, though I like Lights' chances more than CMM 5) Lowest on the 2013 rankdown was around 600 points, so I'll roll with that...but not a strong guess, by any means 6) I'll say around 3600. *shrug*

Did you get my submission? Why yes, in fact your list is next! :) At some point I will probably speed to the end and enter the last few all at once - but with several still to go it's too unwieldy for me to attempt that yet.

Update: 5 lists to go. But the race for #1 has heated up one last time! What had been an over 100-point lead at the start of the final homestretch is now less than 20. :o Oh and I misspoke earlier. We have 44 participants, not 43. Lastly, an advance notice: I will be out-sourcing the position of Standard Deviation compiler to whoever feels like tracking them as we go, to save time of me doing it before starting reveal.

1) Which song do you predict will be #100? "Red Solo Cup". I hope "Birthday Cake" isn't #100 because the album version is such a jam (I didn't rank it that high but still).
2) Which song do you predict will have the lowest peak ranking? (I.E. Nobody has it ranked higher than...something like #50.) I feel like country songs and urban songs have some fans that might rank them high but I'm going to go with "Red Solo Cup". I wouldn't be surprised to see it be something like "50 Ways to Say Goodbye" though.
3) Which song do you predict will have the most #1 rankings? "Lights"?
4) Do you think that the song you picked for (3) will also be the #1 song in this Rankdown? It could very well be. I just hope "Rolling in the Deep" doesn't win because it's already won the 2011 one.
5) Guess the number of points that song #100 will end up with.
Around 550? EDIT: Actually that might be too high... 300?
6) Guess the number of points that the #1 song will end up with. Maximum possible is 4400 (44*100) so 3300?

Spreadsheets can give you the SDs in less than 5 seconds tho And what's the formula? I recall reading that the actual formula to be used for this is different from the regular Excel formula. Could that be due to there being STDEV and STDEVP in Excel? There are at least two formulas that I know of to calculate standard deviation (the n and the n-1 method are the ones I know of). I think the former assumes that the dataset is a sample of the population while the latter assumes that the dataset encompasses the whole population, or at least that's how I understood what Google told me. I'm thinking using STDEVP would be better in this case based on what I've read, but is there someone good at stats who can confirm this (using the n method [STDEVP] vs. n-1 method [STDEV]?) I feel like I'm going to confuse everyone with what I just wrote...

This could help you Can someone just tell me real quick how you calculate SD? I let Excel calculate it for me1. Find the average (mean) rank for the song 2. For each individual rank, subtract the mean and then square the result 3. Find the average (mean) for all of the squared results from step 2 4. Find the square root of the result you got in #3 Edit - to go with what Leo said, the Excel formula on a US English computer will be =STDEV(data range here)

Find the square root of the result you got in #3 Edit - to go with what Leo said, the Excel formula on a US English computer will be =STDEV(data range here) This is kind of pedantic but I realized my explanation was kind of sloppy so I want to correct it a bit. There are two types of standard deviation - population standard deviation and sample standard deviation. Population s.d. assumes the data is a 'closed' set - ergo, your standard deviation is exact. Sample s.d. assumes the data is taken from a larger group of data, not all of which was able to be captured; ergo, your standard deviation is an estimate. Where I was sloppy - the first explanation I gave above is the formula for population standard deviation, but then the Excel formula I gave is for sample standard deviation (if you're using Excel 2010 or later, you can also use STDEV.S). If you want Excel to calculate the population standard deviation, use STDEV.P (2010 or later Excel versions) or STDEVP (compatible with all Excel versions). And if for some crazy reason you want to calculate sample standard deviation by hand, replace step three with "add up all squared results, then divide the sum by N-1 (where N is the number of ranks you received)." When you sort from lowest to highest standard deviation your results will be the exact same either way, though. That order is usually the only reason anyone cares about standard deviation for rankdowns, so it doesn't matter as much which one you go with. Edit: I just scrolled up after posting this, but this is what fearlessarrow was talking about in his post above. Population s.d. is the 'n' formula and standard deviation is the 'n-1' formula. Neither is really 'wrong' or even more accurate depending on what you're trying to do with it. Population s.d. claims 100% accuracy on the presumption that you're not trying to capture the overall opinion of a larger group of people than the ones you surveyed (which for rankdowns makes sense) but there are times when sample s.d. is the more appropriate formula to use.
