Who is this special needs girl getting her life on stage rn She is the most unattractive female singer around. Her and Sheeran should be together. Yep! That's what music is all about! This input is valued!

Looks like Demi's performance is pre-recorded. It was. I actually got an email invite to go to the taping in vegas.

5th Harmony sound and perform like 4 Michelle's.
Anwyho I am trying to understand how Lorde had the flu but still managed to sit in the audience after that performance.

Nicki Minaj sure got into a niche. Music didn't have "the" female rapper years ago and she filled that.

The biggest problem I'm having is that half these artists are performing singles that are so damn old and overplayed. I love when artists debut first singles here, like Katy did with Roar... makes it so much more exciting since it's never been performed before. I agree with you. However sometimes award shows request you sing the hits. The general public also likes it that way too most of the times. Wa Wa Wa.... I doubt that was the case with Ed Sheeran and the VMA's. I'm sure he could sing what he wanted but chose that. Maybe he thought "Perfect" wasn't suited for the VMA's??? Julia Michael's doesn't have a current hit or a single that is trying to gain traction and they probably told her to sing "Issues". lol 5th Harmony perhaps didn't realize "Down" was going to flop by the time the awards hit and already spent money on this performance..... I think it worked out for them being in their position right now. I haven't finished watching so I can't comment on the rest. lol. Again I would prefer artists do new stuff too.

As long as ed doesn't do shape of you or even a medley with shape of you for the American music awards I'm okay. It's time to let that song go

Highlights for me were Logic's performance and Pink's medley and speech. 1-800-273-8255 is a song I've been seeing on Spotify for weeks now but ignored it because of the title and thanks to the VMA performance, I discovered this beautiful song

Who in the hell does Adam Levine think he is? Just because you didn't think of doing such a thing doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I do think it's unconventional and different, but Lorde is unconventional. She took the time to do a thoughtful and fun interpretive dance. What in the fucking fuck have you done lately other than be an entitled white prick who makes trash music that everyone pretends to like to seem like they are part of something or some shit like that but talks shit about in private? You don't get to talk about this subject as you know nothing about what art is. You don't look that hot anymore. Not even a paper bag will make it work.

Ehhhhh Adam can come across as insufferable but it's not like he's the only one who was thinking that lol. I'm surprised he even bothered watching the show b/c he's thrown shade at MTV before for no longer playing music.
That said this also isn't the first time MTV has done the 'cut you off to go to commercial break' thing. Remember that time they got Jessie J to let them do that to her for the entire show? lol. And i think there was another time they did it too. They need to let it go as it is not nearly as smooth a transition to commercials as they think it is and it usually just ends up ticking off people who want to hear the whole song.
You know this show was a dud when no one bothers to make a favorite performance poll. 5H and Logic really were the only two to bring it, huh.

The difference this time was that they actually presented those performers so it seemed to me that they even humiliated those artists a bit

MTV’s Video Music Awards faced stiff competition Sunday night from the season-seven finale of “Game of Thrones.” But the awards show managed to outperform the fantasy drama’s record-breaking episode in the teen demographic, averaging 309,000 teen viewers for the seven-network simulcast, according to Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers.
The VMAs also saw its share of younger viewers 12-24 increase from last year’s show.
Overall, linear ratings for the VMAs were down 16% in MTV’s target 18-34 demo, with a 4.46 — down from a 5.33 rating last season. The VMAs have seen steady linear ratings declines in recent years as the network has shifted its strategy around the show to emphasize social media. The show averaged just over 6 million total linear viewers, down from 6.5 million last year. But for the month of August, MTV is up 31% year over year in primetime 18-34.

That's a decent result!
Also the audience on social media (primarily Instagram I presume) has been quite big.
And that increase compared to last August is huge!

Yeah I didn't paste the entire article but social media was up this year. Queen Katy still wins.

As much as I hate to admit this, Adam has a point.
While Lorde may be regarded as avant garde, cutting edge, etc., she looked like a fool Sunday night. "Homemade Dynamite" is one of the highlights of Melodrama and she wasted debuting it to the GP by dancing around to the clean edit of the track. She really should have just pulled out of her performance if she was ill and didn't have a voice.
Meanwhile, Best New Artist nominee Julia Michaels was given a 0:30-1:00 slot to perform her single before we were subjected to another promo for "The Challenge 30-something" or any of MTV's other reality shows.

Plus MTV is moving towards online and social media instead of tv viewers.

That's an all time low rating for the VMA's, even with the multiple airings. Hardly #winning.
Add terrible reviews for the show and I'm thinking they're probably gonna revamp the whole thing next year.
That said, Pink's speech was really good.

But they were performing songs 8-10 months off from being hits that were killed to death on the radio and performed millions of times before. I wish they'd debut their next singles or perform collabs or just change it up so I don't see the same thing I saw on Jimmy Kimmel or Fallon the night before...

Considering it was up against Game Of Thrones and a lot of people have gotten rid of their TVs/cable, I think those ratings are good. Awards shows are much more focused on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat now, not really TV, which makes it hard to measure how many people were really watching. That figure also doesn't include international viewers

I actually didn't think years show was all that bad. Last years was worse in my opinion only due to those hosts/dj's/comedians. (i think that was last year) Were they saying there were to many performances, less awards, Katy wasn't funny???

MTV put up some of the song performances on their YouTube channel as did some of the artists on their own channels. It was nice to do that so those who missed it or chose not to watch, or want to re-watch their favorites could do that without having to dig around on the web. I remember having to look for the performances on YouTube right after they happened so I could see them before a copyright claim would be made to remove it.

I'm not surprised it had such tragic ratings. These people can't compare to the exciting superstars we use to have from pop to urban . Now we have trash in all genres! And mediocre folk.
Having said that Pink is everything!
