MTV definitely should've included Best R&B Video category this year

Wow, MTV hit an all new low this year.
First of all, removing Best Male and Best Female Video. Everyone knows that MTV is very "PC" nowadays, so maybe they got rid of the categories because all this "no gender" nonsense. Or maybe they were just wanted to switch things up, I don't know. Though replacing them with Artist of the Year makes no sense, this is a Music Video award show. Why are we giving categories to just the artist? It removes everything unique the VMA's had.
Second of all, trying to fit only black artists in the Video of the Year category. This year is the first year that the coveted award has only black artists. A noble feat, but it wasn't executed well. There was so many great videos made by black artists this year, but of course modern MTV has never been good with their picks. There was so many obvious choices, "That's What I Like," "Tunnel Vision," "Wyclef Jean," "DNA," "Story of O.J.," "iSpy," "I Feel It Coming," f**king anything by SZA. I mean, c'mon! - Plus so many other great videos by other ethnic groups snubbed. Because MTV likes to push a black agenda, f**k everyone else I guess.
Third of all, snubbing Lady Gaga and Linkin Park. Both of these artists helped boost MTV's popularity in their respective era's, and not nominating them is treason.
Fourth of all, the "Fight Against The System" category. This speaks for itself, look how stupid that sounds. MTV, you're not MLK.
Fifth of all, how randomly some categories will have 5 nominees or 6 nominees. The entire nominations look unorganized, like MTV forgot the VMA's existed (like everyone else) and decided to cobble up the nominations in 15 minutes.
That's all, but it perfectly showcases how much the VMA's have fallen from grace. The VMA's and MTV have been declining for years now, but this year seems like the official death.

Few thoughts: at Reminder over literally any other Weeknd vídeo. Any nods for Halsey's Now or Never video are a joke. Scars to Your Beautiful? Nice message but it is a bore of a video. 24k Magic is ok but he did it better when it was called Uptown Funk. That's What I Like's simplicity probably killed it's chances but it was way more memorable and deserving. Katy getting a few deserving nods is fine. Witness is a mess but the vídeo for CTTR delivered.

I totally get why Gaga isn't nominated, nobody outside us Little Monsters knows that John Wayne has a video and Million Reasons is not that good. In 2011 she would've got 2-3 noms, this is 2017 and the relevance among MTV audience has faded.
Katy Perry is getting those noms probably because she'll get the Video Vanguard award. She won't win any of the categories. Just my guess, obviously.

Reminder being nominated is so random Should've been False Alarm Again, it looks like they rushed to make the nominations. And it isn't like this year wasn't a good year for music videos, there was many great picks. False Alarm should've got at least one nomination, as should of I Feel It Coming for Art Direction. Reminder just got the nod because it's The Weeknd's current single, even though it's the least memorable video from Starboy.

Who even is the MTV audience anymore? Do people under 30 still watch TV? You mean over 30 right? People 21 and under seem to be their audience now since they partnered with some "social media personalities" to announce the nominations. I don't know who these kids are and I don't care either.

I know people like to get on the BET Awards for being ratchet, but at least this year it had freaking New Edition to look forward to. There's literally nothing to look forward to for this year's VMAs. I agree with the poster who said the VMA's in the 90s and the early 2000s were the best times to watch. Sad what it went down to. I remember those specials that show what stars were planning to wear to the VMAs. I think one of them was Britney.

You watch the BET Awards and you have something to talk about. The VMA's wish to be that interesting, but they are not. They are just boring now. Let's hope they have a great line-up of performers this year, the only thing that saved last years show was Beyonce. But she is on her regular year long break, so if MTV doesn't really deliver with the performances this year than there's nothing saving this disaster.

To be fair, the viewership record for the VMAs is from 2011 so it's not that everything ended early 00s
There have been ups and downs in recent years... 2014 was awful in ratings, 2015 much better and 2016 again worse, the lowest in show's history. We'll see what happens this year.

There is literally *nothing* to look forward to. If Katy Perry, Kendrick (no offense), and The Weeknd are what we're supposed to look forward to in terms of nominees...

People 21 and under seem to be their audience now since they partnered with some "social media personalities" to announce the nominations. I don't know who these kids are and I don't care either. ngl I can't really get mad at this particular set of nominees b/c when I was trying to come up with some predicted nominees/performers some days ago, I couldn't even think of that many. I don't know if this means I'm out of touch, if it's because all the 'cool' celebs are in an off-season, or if that's just how low the overall star power is in the latest crop of so-called celebrities, but I'm not even sure if it's worth it to get riled up on how the VMAs dropped the ball this year when there wasn't much of a ball to grab on to in the first place. I also feel like we're on the verge of televised award shows in general being passe, which for music is rather unfortunate because the award show is maybe the last remaining outlet for being able to reach the masses at once. Everything else is so fragmented.

1995 was the GOAT Video of the Year nominees.... Like the VMAs used to be a cultural moment. I miss it.

Part of this "VMAs are over" discussion is true, part is false.
It's true that award shows are not what they used to in terms of cultural impact. That said, we'll see great peaks in consumption for artists who perform at the Grammys or even at the VMAs (last year Lemonade was a greatest gainer on BB200 after Beyoncés performance)
It's true that the pop field was more versatile in the 90s but it's not MTV's fault
It's true that the audience is fragmented... is there anything else than let's say Game of Thrones and Super Bowl Halftime Show that interest EVERYONE? No.
It's false that MTV should discontinue the VMAs just because of the reasons above as it's still the most powerful brand they have and one of the most tweeted events in pop. As long as they think it's worth arranging let them do so.
BBMAs earlier showed that great showstopper performances make everything worthwhile even though the ratings are not through the roof. Look at the positive press Cher and Celine Dion had. -> show is still a promotion tool for artists.
Someone said on Facebook that Youtube should arrange this awards show, well they've tried LOL

Katy Perry is hosting.
It could go either way, but regardless, I don't think there was a way to make worse hosting decisions than what they tried last year.
