I watched the performance for a few times and is seriously wowed by them once again after the HLT video. I really do think things are looking pretty good for them. The four of them really seem to like each other and know they should be together at least for another 2-3 years, which is something quite rare for pop groups (not necessarily girl groups). In some way, I do appreciate Camila's leave right now. It has forced their music to have, probably for the first time ever, kind of a clear narrative (stay hustling despite shit happens), and the "girl power" stuff they've been doing from day one now seems much more authentic.

That performance was everything. It's so interesting to me, their journey. They seem so undervalued. Their record sales are abysmal, but at the same time their record label has always seemed ready to dispose of them. I wonder why they're such MTV darlings, as their commercial success (or lack thereof) doesn't seem to warrant the kind of regard they've received over the years from a high profile show like the VMAs. Or maybe the VMAs isn't what it used to be in the early 2000s. Not complaining because I'm a big fan, it's just bizarre to me. I also wonder why Epic has always seemed so determined to sabotage the girls.
Also, seeing them perform Angel has kind of made me a stan for the song. Here for it as a single down the road.

Is there any way to vote Ally out the group. She throws the whole vibe off for me. Horrible dancer, sings like a sex kitten, and looks like a little kid.

Gave the album a single run-through tonight and I liked it, but it didn't feel like there were as many standouts to me as on the last two records. But there also wasn't anything bad on it either, which is good (cause their first two records have also had songs I disliked). It's a consistent listen with some good jams, but I'm gonna need more listens to figure out my faves.
Have they decided what the second single will be yet? 'Cause right now I'm torn because "Angel" sounds like a smash to me, but that super visual for "He Like That" tho...

I believe these awards are fan-voted, and Fifth Harmony has a big fanbase, despite not having monster sales or whatever other measure of traditional success.

Vocally, they were pretty thin as usual, but at least they served it visually. And that Camila stand-in falling off the stage and the split got me hyped.

I hope they have some promo lined up for He Like That, but I'm afraid it seemed like their whole budget went into the VMAs performance lol

I also wonder why Epic has always seemed so determined to sabotage the girls. Also, seeing them perform Angel has kind of made me a stan for the song. Here for it as a single down the road. MTV - and a lot of other awards shows & media, for that matter - are placing a ton of emphasis on social media. Perhaps too much, because there's *still* a minimal proven connection between success on social and conventional commercial metrics like TV ratings and music sales. Fifth Harmony is massive in that world. They made a huge statement a few years ago by winning that Best New Artist award at the VMAs, and they've also won some other fan-voted honors as well. Didn't they also beat FN Rihanna (who's no slouch when it comes to passionate stans) for a fan-voted award at the AMAs? But, anyway, Fifth Harmony seems HUGE within the demographic MTV courts. Social also plays a huge role in promotion for awards shows, and producers know they can tap into that realm by booking this sort of group. Frankly, that's also why you see them treated as A-listers by the media. Even though they're STILL not especially comfortable on stage (outside of Normani), they're also rhythmic-leaning. That adds a "cool" factor and helps to compensate for the stigma against boy bands and girl groups. Normani is the real deal. No clue why the industry doesn't seem to be too fascinated with her. She has the least distinctive recording voice in the group by far, which doesn't help since people are more likely to judge them based on the recordings than performances. The other issue, interestingly enough, is "X Factor." She, up until very recently, hadn't been presenting herself with any flair or assertiveness - and that makes it hard for some to see that she's obviously the strongest on stage. I'm also not aware of her having a well-defined off-stage personality. Lauren's the exact opposite when it comes to the latter points. Great voice, but she's brutally awkward on stage - she always looks like's trying desperately to remember her dance moves. But she has a certain "strength" in her presentation that suggests star quality. But I think Dancing With The Stars was a real turning point for Normani. She seems more confident now, and she completely stole the show last night.

Normani & Lauren are my faved 2 since the start Especially when it comes to live performing, Normani kills it.
Ally was always solid, they usually just dress her kinda bad Dinah is solid, but they should really give this girl a chance to let her vocals shine cause she's got em
Camilla was always my least favorite, not that she was bad or anything. Her voice sometimes is annoying, her solo performing is much better though.

Their VMA performance is by far the most viewed one from this year (1.7 m), followed by Katy (1.4 m) and Logic (1.2 m).

They SLAYED.
The closest thing the VMAs had to an iconic moment/performance, between the intro, Normani's split, and even Keyshia Kior (a TSR/social media fave). The dancing was decent too, I'm sure they feel pressured to sing live but if Biebs can get away with straight up lipping, I think people can let them do it too. Or just give them a louder backing track.
Definitely the most entertaining performance of the night, and the only time where the audience didn't seem bored out of their minds.

It seemed to me their performance was the most talked about of the night, right? Definitely the most entertaining performance of the night, and the only time where the audience didn't seem bored out of their minds. You could tell the audience was really feeling it. ^id strongly argue logics performance was iconic It just felt repetitive to me. It seems like we've seen that same performance several times with survivors appearing on stage halfway through the song.

Lady Gaga ("Til It Happens to You" at the Oscars with rape victims) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ("Same Love" with the LGBTQA+) It's been done.

Y'all stay praising mediocrity while trashing King Logic's display of pure skill on that stage with one of his worst songs (obv, the message is essential but the song itself...meh). Typical Pulse. Homeboy sang CIRCLES around those girls, let's not tell lies, but sure...splits. Also, I've seen better splits on amateur night at the Hustler Club, if I'm keeping it 100.

It's the VMAs so, yeah, we're taking a fun performance with strong visuals over a song with a message and somebody singing circles around whatever. Pulse or not.

Their performance at the VMA's was cute for them and an overall improvement from their past performances, but those girls are extremely unpolished performers to be so far along in their careers. The timing was off on dance steps and they look sloppy, one girl is always 2 seconds behind everyone else, they have ill fitting costumes (dress for the size you are and not the size you want to be), and there is an overall lack of synchronization which should be a key ingredient for any group. Vocally they were okay until one of them tried to do too much and went totally flat and the stunt in the beginning was totally unnecessary and looked sloppy. If you gonna shade, don't look like a grop in a high school talent show.
I do understand the standards are low for these girls, but when you look at real iconic performances by female groups like EnVogue, Destiny's Child & TLC, this isn't even in the same ballpark as "iconic".

And who is? I get what you're saying and I agree to a point, but just look at current pop stars. Does Demi Lovato compare to Janet, Mariah or any other diva that came before? Does Selena Gomez? Does Justin Bieber compare to Michael Jackson or even to J Timberlake. The bar is set way low nowadays. Saying Fifth Harmony is not in the same ballpark as Destiny's Child is like criticizing Selena Gomez for not being as good as Beyoncé.

It took DC years to be just decent performers as a group. And even then, we still had Michelle falling and being an absolute mess.

Fifth Harmony, Little Mix and June's Postcard are pretty much the only active girl groups in existence at this point so while no one's really expecting them to be on the same level as the iconic groups that came before them, one would expect them to be more seasoned performers at this point. Hell, if their performance skills were sharper, it'd help compensate for their hit and miss material.
