Artist of the Year looks like they just went with the five biggest album sellers of the eligibility year. I know AMAs skews popular, but dang we could just check the year-end Billboard charts for that. I'll begrudgingly accept that Chainsmokers makes sense if we're going solely off hits/overall presence,, but IMO Drake definitely shouldn't be there. He said himself he's taking this year off for the most part and hasn't done much for More Life other than release it. The Best New Artist category is a mess too (Post Malone and Rae Sremmurd are new since when???), but not as many people will pay that category any mind. I think I need to come to terms with Julia Michaels having a real shot at Grammys BNA as this is the second show where she's gotten a spot in that category. But again, I think this category was pretty heavily influenced by sales/chart success. "American Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound." www.theamas.com/about/

In year's past, they've announced 10 Artist noms and then let fans vote for the top five. Wonder why they retired that method this year.

I always thought the AMAs were a blend of chart data and overall assessment of the music scene - so for example, someone like Lorde gets an Artist of the Year nom despite lack of Hot 100 success because her album was critically well received and did debut at #1 - but it's just straight up chart data. In year's past, they've announced 10 Artist noms and then let fans vote for the top five. Wonder why they retired that method this year. Weren't most of the categories fan-voted to some degree (either voting for the nominations or voting for the winners)? Have they scrapped voting entirely? Maybe the entire top 10 was men and they thought that would look even worse. I just looked at the SPS sales in the 2017 YTD albums thread and the only woman in the top 25 is Rihanna...and she's #22. Adding in singles success probably doesn't help any women out. As hard as I try to build a bridge and get over it, I'll never not be irked that music is the one field of entertainment that doesn't have a 100% 'respected' award show; but the performance lineups are the one silver lining to this [sometimes]. So I just hope the performances are good.

Here for Ed, Rihanna, Abel, and Niall.
But this show's big draw is the performances. They didn't live up to their usual standard last year (Abel's anal adventures and the Levine/Lamar morphine effect tribute come to mind), but the lineup itself I don't recall being bad on paper.

Julia Michaels has a hit but her influence beyond that is minimal, would really be surprised if she gets a nom at the Grammy's for BNA

If Taylor is performing she won't say a word about it until day 10.

Two performances for Kelly--I assume it's more like two songs within one longer performance. I don't think "fan favorite" would relate to something like the Bodyguard tribute but who knows.

Christina's doing the Bodyguard tribute...but would totally be here for a "I'm Every Woman" duet!

Hardly a complaint from me, but LOL at the line-up so far being a total diva fest given what 2017's charts have been looking like.

I was hoping they would give What About Us one last push to try get top 10 on the Hot 100, but I really like Beautiful Trauma so I wouldn’t have an issue with them launching it as a single there

At this point, daring for P!nk would to be forced to lip-sync

Khalid and Imagine Dragons sounds interesting, I'm assuming they are gonna start promoting Whatever It Takes now that Thunder is a big hit. And Slow Hands? Really Niall? You get a chance to do some big promotion for a new song and you choose a 6 month old track that's already peaked.
Taylor is probably gonna perform, I'm predicting that she'll open the show with Endgame featuring Ed Sheeran & Future and maybe Ready For It?

If 1989 era is any indication Taylor is probably more likely to do another video premiere than show up and perform.
