With all the talk involving both of these songs in the discussion surrounding the "most weeks at #1" record possibly being broken, it's only natural that this poll be made.
So, which song do you prefer? The smash R&B ballad from two of the biggest acts of the '90s or the Latin crossover smash with a remix featuring one of the biggest acts of the 2010s?

"Despacito", didn't even care for OSD that much 21 years ago, both Mariah and the Boyz have done better songs.

One Sweet Day will always be that ONE song that people will remember in many years to come. Much more timeless in quality than the other song.

With all the One Sweet Day threads in place now, lots of people seem to be talking a lot about a song they can't remember

I've always found OSD to be an incredibly overrated joke of a song. Despacito, by far.

Unless you're super young and wasn't even around in the 90s, I doubt that it's been largely forgotten to people who are now in their late 20s and up demographic. You guys made it sound like it was some kind of one hit wonder. Mariah and Boyz II Men were at their peak in the mid 90s and already had Diamond certified albums. What is so iconic about Despacito? I doubt it would have the same kind of impact as One Sweet Day.

Both are completely forgettable. I give the vote to Mariah strictly based on the vocal performance.

Yes, and both Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men have multiple other hits that come to mind to well before, and in the majority of cases, instead of, One Sweet Day despite its objectively larger chart success. OSD has virtually no lasting impact outside numbers, and whatever spot it could hope to hold in popular culture is taken (and still held) by Bette Midler's cover for Wind Beneath My Wings :sip2: .

I think people's strong animosity towards the song is getting the best of them. People had expressed the same sentiment with "Hero". If OSD doesn't have any lasting impact outside numbers, as you say, then in 2015, it wouldn't be ranked first inΒ Rolling Stone's reader's poll for the Best Collaboration of All Time.Β Plus, it's been sang by finalists on American Idol and on other voice competition shows. It just takes a little digging of research to see that. I get that these songs have sappy lyrics, but they obviously still resonate on people's minds in some form or another. Daydream is not even my favorite Mariah album by any means, but I won't berate its blatant impact on pop culture.

A RS poll is what I would consider "virtually no lasting impact". And you're confusing animosity and disinterest.
You tried to make a point that OSD is remembered because it was a collaboration between two massive acts at the time. You said it was "that ONE song" that people remember, and I pointed out to you that both of those acts have other songs that are brought to mind well before that song, if they recall it at all. Nobody said it was "some kind of one hit wonder" as you tried to point out, and that they "already had Diamond certified albums" is also not relevant in the discussion of whether one specific single from those albums is remembered that well or not.
tl;dr: You're making a really bad argument for your case.

"One Sweet Day," for me.
Glove Slap is correct, in that the song hasn't really held up in terms of recurrent airplay, especially considering how huge it was upon release. But when first out, it was as big as it was because of the theme, sung by two of the hottest acts, commercially, of the time.

The only person making a bad argumentative case is YOU because it is YOU that chose to hit that respond button just because my statements didn't lined up with yours. Like I said, your opinions are all subjective. I think you are confusing making an opinion versus providing facts in which you seem to be doing here. You're dismissing your opinions as fact. And no, I am not confusing animosity with disinterest because it's pretty clear that your ignorance and biasism are mostly clouding your judgements. You are making weak arguments here based on your personal biased statements on the song. Just saying "it has no impact outside its number" literally doesn't say anything. I presented proof and you clearly weren't mature enough to handle it. You would rather respond to me in a petty, infantile matter. I would have taken you more seriously if you went into more depth with your reasonings behind your arguments, but no, you would rather take the petty, infantile way out. If your idea is corresponding with people by picking fights and taking offense, then that's on YOU. Some people just like to enlighten others by doing more research, and being more educated than others when providing their statements with proof.

It's not like nobody knows OSD. It's just that Mariah's had such enormous success after it that other songs of hers come before it.
This is also due to the fact that Mariah stopped performing it live after 1998 and has just recently included it in her tour setlists again.

OSD is cute but overrated and it's not one of my favorites from Mariah Carey. I gotta give it to "Despacito," which I love and have never tired of.

Why is everyone else's opinions subjective but yours are fact? What? Just stop lmao Lol, what? I think it's you that should be refrained from speaking because you guys are getting to be so ridiculous and embarrassing now. As I recalled, you were the one that chose to initiate this conversation by responding with "even if people hardly remember it" and I gave you my answer. Why choose to respond to my post if you can't handle my answers? When I gave my opinion, you guys are the one that had questioned it, and I answered it by giving examples on why I still think the song does have impact. Yes, I still stand by my opinions that I think it's a bit ignorant and delusional to say that ONE Sweet Day has no impact whatsoever or it's hardly remembered. It sounds like you guys need to do every bit of some digging and research about the song because you people sound a bit culturally inept. That's just my opinion about you guys. Sorry but not sorry for speaking my mind. π Obviously, my responses only further cements how ridiculously you guys are so hot and bothered with my response just because my opinions are different from yours. Haha, otherwise, you wouldn't give me so much of your time and attention. We're just gonna have to agree to disagree on this topic. SO MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIVES, PEOPLE!!!
