so yeah I decided to finally host a rankdown of my own. like james I'm gonna blatantly rip off au$tin's shuffle rankdown idea (right down to stealing his tag list ) and use my spotify song library to get 40 songs to rank. some of them are pretty well known, some of them will most definitely be first listens for most of you (including myself lmao) I'm planning for the deadline either being october 20th or october 27th, depends when I finish revealing the list I'll start revealing them tomorrow, but meanwhile here are hints for the first five songs: 1: this bands breakthrough single, they last charted on the hot 100 three years ago 2: this late 1990s single had a radio edit that sampled biggie and a b-side that featured 2pac 3: this anonymous dj got his second charting single in canada with this song 4: this indie rock song was submitted in a march madness tournament by me 5: this song was originally released on the mortal instruments: city of bones soundtrack and is sung by an artist who would get a top three hit on the hot 100 a year later {list of songs} OK Go - “Here It Goes Again” Jon B. - “They Don’t Know” Marshmello f/ Wrabel - “Ritual” Summer Moon - “With You Tonight” Seven Lions / Myon & Shane 54 f/ Tove Lo - “Strangers” Chromeo - “When The Night Falls” Ella Henderson - “Ghost” Dragonette - “Let The Night Fall” Kylie Minogue - “All I See” The Golden Pony f/ Denham - “Passionfruit” Tiesto & Oliver Heldens f/ Natalie La Rose - “The Right Song” David Guetta f/ Kelly Rowland - “When Love Takes Over” Liv Dawson - “Painkiller” Midas Hutch f/ Bluey Robinson - “The High” Carrie Underwood - “Little Toy Guns” The Veronicas - “On Your Side” Redlight f/ Ms. Dynamite - “What You Talking About?” Cheat Codes f/ Demi Lovato - “No Promises” Drake - “The Language” ROZES - “Hangin’ On” Kylie Minogue - “Get Outta My Way” David Guetta f/ Zara Larsson - “This One’s For You” M83 - “Reunion” Run River North - “Run Or Hide” Madeon f/ Passion Pit - “Pay No Mind” Conro - “Close” Natasha Bedingfield - “Pocketful of Sunshine” Chicane f/ Bryan Adams - “Don’t Give Up” WALK THE MOON - “Down In The Dumps” Karen Harding - “Those Girls” Creedence Clearwater Revival - “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” Chris Brown f/ Aaliyah - “Don’t Think They Know” Youth Club - “Pressure” Meredith Brooks - “Bitch” Post Malone - “Too Young” Afrojack f/ Mike Taylor - “SummerThing!” Sunstroke Project - “Hey Mamma” LIGHTS - “Running With The Boys” Boosie Badazz - “Cancer” Kid Cudi - “Day ‘N’ Nite” preference revealer

I don't remember the timeline of 'The Mortal Instruments' versus their careers, but Ariana Grande is also possibly a candidate for #5, if the timeline checks out for her - although IDK if you'd actually have 'Problem' in this game.
It's absolutely not Demi (which is sad because 'Heart By Heart' is fantastic).

well it's been a while, let's start revealing some songs!
#1
OK Go "Here It Goes Again" Oh No (2005)
#2
Jon B. "They Don't Know" Cool Relax (1997)
#3
Marshmello f/ Wrabel "Ritual" (2016)
#4
Summer Moon "With You Tonight" With You Tonight (2017)
#5
Seven Lions / Myon & Shane 54 f/ Tove Lo "Strangers" The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (soundtrack) (2013) / World's Apart (EP) (2014)
here's some hints for the next five songs to be revealed today (after this I'll be doing ten at a time to make the reveals go faster): 6: this canadian electo-funk band featured solange in the video for this song 7: this former x-factor contestant barely missed the top 20 on the hot 100 and the top ten on pop radio with this song 8: this canadian synthpop band released this lead single to their most recent album a year before the album was released 9: this artist had a rankdown a few months ago and my only post in the thread was lamenting how I thought this 2008 song was ranked too low lmao 10: this is a cover of a recent top ten hit done by a duo who burst onto the scen with unofficial remixes of "the sound of silence" and "everybody wants to rule the world" in 2014

#7 sounds like it could be Niall with 'This Town'. You didn't specify which country of X-Factor. ;) #6 sounds like Chromeo? I don't recall the song name, but I *think* it's one Gravey used in Discography Madness, and she was featured as a backing vocalist.

some (probably terrible in some cases lmao) hints for the next ten songs: 11: originally released as an instrumental track by two dutch djs, this song got another dutch artist for the vocal version, which barely made the top 40 in the uk in 2016 12: this song was named the number one dance-pop collaboration of all time in a 2013 billboard article 13: the most recent song on the list, only being released on august 11th (with an acoustic version being released two days ago), it shares a title with one of the top ten country albums of 2015 and is by an artist who's on the record label owned by disclosure 14: this nu disco-y song has a number of spotify plays corresponding to its title, 2.6 million 15: the only country song on this list, it peaked at #2 on the airplay charts and was one of two new songs off the artists greatest hits collection 16: this duos followup to a #1 australian hit has a music video directed by the partner of one of the members 17: this british producer who's best known for his deep house hits in 2012 got his first charting song on the uk dance chart with this, a collaboration with an explosively named grime artist 18: this song was a #1 hit on my personal chart this year and features vocals from a former disney star 19: english and french are examples of them 20: this artist got her start on a song bearing her name, the song on this list was her first released after her debut ep

I didn't know what to think of #16 lol, being #1 in Australia didn't necessarily mean the artist was Australian, just that the preceding hit was #1 here. But I love seeing their inclusion!

the final batch of hints if anyone is curious: 31: the oldest song on the rankdown, this 1971 single went #1 in canada and has been thought to be about the vietnam war, the idealism of the 1960s, or tensions in the band itself 32: this song samples a song already revealed and has a posthumous guest artist 33: this indie pop band from london titled this song after a force (tbh I think the song's too obscure for a good hint for me lmao) 34: this 90s alt-rock artists biggest hit, another one of her songs was used of the theme song of a talk show in the mid 2000s 35: this tribute to a then recently deceased artist was the follow up to a #14 peaking hot 100 hit earlier in the year 36: this seasonal dance song is by an artist mentioned in one of the previous hints and was apparently used in a mcdonalds commercial 37: this 2017 eurovision entry did much better there than their last attempt years before 38: this song is by an artist featured in a rankdown I've previously participated in and features her real life friends in the video 39: this baton rouge native raps about a disease he was then recently diagnosed with in this song 40: this song about a stoner got it's big break in many countries thanks to a remix by a dance duo
