When I started the first Journey rankdown, I couldn't have possibly imagined how popular it would be and how much fun I would have hosting the rankdown and coming up with ideas on the fly. I kind of love how the "Ballot Update" just randomly became a thing, out of nowhere, because it popped up in my head at that moment, and I thought, "Eh, why not? Let's see if it sticks." If this rankdown provides the same imagination, it will have done its job and then some. Even if it's just more of the same, I wouldn't mind more of the same, especially if it means we all wind up having as much fun as last time. And hey, maybe Green won't be banned this time.
Speaking of how popular the first Journey was, I was absolutely not prepared for how successful the first Journey Through Time proved to be. Over 20 submissions? For a personal rankdown? I couldn't help but be overjoyed by how well it did. Do I expect the next version of the Journey to do as well? Not really. I wouldn't say it's as varied as the first Journey. The third book, though...that's another story. Holy crap, there's some crazy stuff going on in that rankdown. But we have to get to the second book before we tackle the third...
Like with the first Journey Through Time, I want to take you all on a look back at my history as a fan of music. There are quite a few missing parts of my growth as a music fan, and with these next two rankdowns, I hope to take care of those holes. With the second book, I wanted to focus even more on the past and the present. The first group of songs has us deal with my fascination with older music, particularly with a decade that I haven't really touched on yet, but it has become such a big part of my taste in music that I simply can't ignore it anymore. From there, we look back at aspects of the first Journey that we covered, some aspects that we didn't, and we end it with something I've been meaning to do from the very beginning.
Want to go over the ground rules again? No? Well, we're doing it, anyway!
- As with the previous Journey, we're going to start by revealing the 40 songs, one by one. There will be hints, as there were last time, and the hints will be as descriptive as always. As with the previous Journey, the majority of the songs in this rankdown are rock or alternative-leaning, but there will also be some surprises. And if you thought the country songs were a surprise in the first Journey...wait until we get to chapter two of this Journey.
- Yet again, I will likely not be taking all that much time with the reveals. As with the first Journey, I have pretty much everything set up for the reveal process: Hints, the actual reveals themselves, you name it. If all goes well, it will not take much time at all to reveal everything. I must include the "real life" disclaimer again, though, because you never know, something could come up and I may have to postpone the reveal for a day or two. Fingers crossed that this doesn't happen.
- After I reveal the 40 songs, there will be two different playlists posted: A YouTube playlist and a Spotify playlist. The Spotify playlist was surprisingly easy to put together, as all forty songs were easily accessible. The YouTube playlist actually was a bit more troublesome, with at least one studio version not being available.
- Once all of that is completed, you will send your rankings (1-40, 1 for your favorite song, 40 for your least favorite) to me via PM. The current deadline date is Friday, November 17th at 11:59pm US Eastern. As with the first Journey, there will be a (likely) 24 hour or so late submission period after the deadline, so if you miss the deadline, don't fret too much! You will still have time to submit.
- If you're not tagged below, it's because you did not participate in the first Journey. Even if you're not tagged, you are still more than welcome to participate! Anyone is welcome...even if one or two posters might not want that to be the case.
The first song reveal will begin momentarily. Before we get to that, of course, we have to get to the first hint! The first song to be revealed is one of those cases where the cover has far eclipsed the original and has become the definitive version of the song. Like "Good Vibrations" kicking things off in the first Journey, this song was a #1 hit and was featured on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs list, though not nearly as high as "Good Vibrations".{The 40 Songs}1) The Animals - House of the Rising Sun 2) The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin 3) Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing 4) Queen - Tie Your Mother Down 5) Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love 6) Heatwave - Boogie Nights 7) Donna Summer - I Feel Love 8) Hall & Oates - Out of Touch 9) Toto - Africa 10) Glenn Frey - You Belong to the City 11) Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana 12) The Human League - Don't You Want Me 13) Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out 14) The Game - Dreams 15) Lupe Fiasco - The Cool 16) Nas - One Mic 17) Public Enemy - Fight the Power 18) Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch 19) Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend 20) Tegan and Sara - U-Turn 21) The Birthday Massacre - Control 22) Auf Der Maur - Followed the Waves 23) Motörhead - Ace of Spades 24) Judas Priest - Painkiller 25) Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera 26) Chromeo - Don't Turn the Lights On 27) Vampire Weekend - Step 28) Royal Blood - Loose Change 29) Tame Impala - Let It Happen 30) Agent Fresco - See Hell 31) Slowdive - Star Roving 32) Mastodon - Sultan's Curse 33) Queens of the Stone Age - Feet Don't Fail Me 34) Nothing But Thieves - I'm Not Made by Design 35) The National - Carin at the Liquor Store 36) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run 37) Led Zeppelin - Kashmir 38) The Beatles - A Day in the Life 39) Muse - Starlight 40) Pearl Jam - Black YOUTUBE PLAYLISTSUBMITTED:Red (oh, hi, self) Troy Daryl the Beryl Doc Indie Party Rock alexcuse willapted33rowellfarm490.indulgecountryGreen BaronBackwoodsBarbieAz Paynter

Anyways, I have no idea what the first hint is. There's a disappointment in the introduction, which, if you know me, is plain obvious.

Anyways, I have no idea what the first hint is. Hmm...how about this, then? The first song to be revealed has a kinda sorta cover version that some of us ranked in an Active rankdown not too long ago. To say that I'm not a fan of that version would be an understatement.

How dare you remind me of that song. Also, that's not the song I'm referring to. Think more egregious of a cover. Think of a band that should not be covering the song that they covered whatsoever. Think c'est la vie, adios, good riddance... Oh, it's House of the Rising Sun. I'm almost disappointed that you didn't finish the line. Book Two, Chapter One: The Classic Rock Revolution
When I think back to when I really started to get into classic rock, it's hard for me not to think of the BIG names of classic rock first and foremost: The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, etc. As it turns out, though, my first real love affair with classic rock began with a song by an artist with a decidedly less impressive track record than those of the biggest names in classic rock. It's still impressive, don't get me wrong, but we're comparing this band to THE BEATLES. Hard to live up to that behemoth. What's funny about the Beatles comparison is that this was the first song of the British Invasion to hit #1 on the Hot 100 that WASN'T a Beatles song. It's also not hard to see why. The raw power and emotion in this cover of a traditional folk song is something to behold. I love Muse so much, but not even they could really do this song justice. It was already a masterpiece.
There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God, I know I'm one

I'm going to go on ahead and post two more hints, because there's a good chance that we won't kick into high gear with the hints and reveals until tomorrow with how late I started this thread, anyway. Who knows? Maybe someone will come in and guess all three immediately and we'll keep going. We'll see. With any luck, this will, like the country reveals in the first Journey, be the only time we have to do this. Song #2: Following in the footsteps of the first song revealed, the next song also comes to us from a British band. The song was initially released in 1967 to very little fanfare Stateside, but it would become a massive hit upon a reissue in 1972, hitting #2 on the Hot 100. It was such a huge success that it wound up boosting the song in their native UK, too, repeaking in the top ten. You might have heard it in a couple of films featuring Robert De Niro, or perhaps in the opening credits of a Tim Burton movie (one of his more recent films)...okay, it was Dark Shadows.
Song #3: It's weird to claim that a song that wasn't even released as a single is one of this legendary guitarist's most famous songs, but it really is. It has become so famous that it even, like #1, made the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs list. It was also famously covered by another legendary guitarist, who took the short original and turned it into a seven minute long instrumental.
Song #4: With this song, we see the first of five repeat offenders (aka: artists who were also in the first Journey). The song featured for this band is the first song on their 1976 album, and it would prove to be a concert staple after it was released as a single. It was even performed when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2 is Nights in White Satin There we go. It seems like I forget about this next song every so often, and, after forgetting about the song, I come back to it and fall in love with it all over again. This has been the case for years, and I'm not really sure how to shake that issue. It's not a song that should be easy to forget. It's a song that was a perfect snapshot of its era, but also a song that wound up being ahead of its time, to the point where it wound up becoming a #2 hit on the Hot 100 five years after its initial release. That's staying power. The staying power has extended well into the current millennium, being featured in many TV shows and films in recent years. Fifty years later, this song still weaves its magic, and you may come to find that it'll weave its magic on you, too. Now, if only I could stop forgetting about this damn song...
Nights in white satin, never reaching the end Letters I've written, never meaning to send Beauty I've always missed, with these eyes before Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore

Another hint to help with #3: We're not just talking about any legendary guitarist. We're talking about THE legendary guitarist, the guitarist many claim is the greatest of all time.

Little Wing - Hendrix/Clapton? Okay, now let's get to work. People always like to talk about "All Along the Watchtower" or "Voodoo Chile" or other Jimi Hendrix songs more often than they do about this one, and, while that doesn't really surprise me, it's also doing a bit of a disservice to how much of a gem this Hendrix song is. I actually really began to appreciate its greatness when I listened to Stevie Ray Vaughan's instrumental version of the song years ago. A dramatically different (and dramatically longer) take on the original, it also kept the spirit of the original and really helped me to appreciate the original even more. Now, I can't imagine referring to another Hendrix song as my favorite. It has too much of a personal meaning, having been there for me at a particularly tough moment in my life, for me to claim otherwise.
When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles she gives to me free It's alright, she said, it's alright Take anything you want from me Anything

I think 4 is Tie Your Mother Down by Queen BackwoodsBarbie is two for two! There are so many Queen songs that I love that I could probably include a Queen song in every possible Journey rankdown. Hell, I could probably come up with a dozen that I'd include before their titanic hit "Bohemian Rhapsody"...like this one, for example. This is a Queen song that, like many of their songs, I got into much later, long after I first got into the band. Little did I know that this was a long-time concert staple and fan favorite. Hell, I wasn't even aware that "Innuendo" was a fan favorite (albeit not one on the level of "The Show Must Go On") for the longest time. I'm not very good with these sorts of things, if you couldn't tell. Anyway, "Innuendo" was serious...let's get decidedly less serious with this particular Queen choice.
Your momma says you don't And your Daddy says you won't And I'm boiling up inside There is no way I'm going to lose out this time

Hey, it's time for our first swerve! The roller coaster ride is back, baby. Admittedly, we stay in the same decade and time frame, but we move into uncharted territory with this next song, one of this artist's most popular songs, and the song that would be, arguably, this artist's most enduring song if we didn't live in a world with one of the most recognizable songs of its era on the same soundtrack album. It shares its name with a Calvin Harris song. When you search for the song title on Google, the Harris version is what pops up first. That seems...a little off.

Bee Gees - How Deep is Your Love This hint/reveal process is not going to get done as quickly as last time, is it? Book Two, Chapter Two: Disco Days
Yeah, I'm not one of those types that hates anything and everything disco. Maybe I would have been one of those people if I had been alive when disco was at its peak, when it was everywhere, but I wasn't. I got into disco long after its dying breath and before it was resuscitated by Daft Punk. In fact, one of my first favorite songs was "Stayin' Alive". I still love "Stayin' Alive" and how groovy and tight it is, and it also helped me to gain a greater appreciation of disco as a style of music. But these days, when I want to point to a Bee Gees song and say, "that's pop perfection", it's hard not to go with this one...
I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me

This next song was a #2 hit in 1977, and, as it turns out, it has endured through quite a few cover versions and appearances in films years after it was first released. This is news to me, as I thought this was just a product of its era that I stumbled into randomly and fell in love with. The song shares its name with Paul Thomas Anderson's most popular film, though, surprisingly, the song is not featured in the film.
