Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Dammit, I knew you'd guess this one and not the other one. It's always one or the other pre-Bruce. I should have also mentioned that I previously picked this song for a Rock Tournament.

Dammit, I knew you'd guess this one and not the other one. It's always one or the other pre-Bruce. I should have also mentioned that I previously picked this song for a Rock Tournament. Phantom of the Opera Up the Irons. Yeah, cutting straight to the chase here, we all know this is Iron Maiden. If we're including Motörhead and Priest, there's no way I can not include Maiden. But what Maiden song? Well, many would consider the likes of "The Number of the Beast", or "Run to the Hills", or "The Trooper", or especially "Hallowed Be Thy Name", but none of those are my Maiden choice. Instead, my Maiden choice is pre-Dickinson. Oh yes, it's from the Di'Anno days. But really, if we're going with one song from the pre-Dickinson days, it has to be this one, right? I mean, I guess it could be "Iron Maiden" or maybe 'Wrathchild"...nah, it's "Phantom of the Opera".
I've been looking so long for you now You won't get away from my grasp You've been living so long in hiding And hiding behind that false mask
SONG #25 Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera

HARD SWERVE! This roller coaster is getting closer to the end, but first, we have to move forward in time yet again, this time to the current decade, which is where we're going to stay for a little while. This first song, off of an album by this Canadian duo released in 2010, features an...um...interesting video, to be sure. I've always liked to refer to this band as the Canadian version of another artist that is also in this Journey. They also remixed a popular song on Pulse this year.

Don't Turn the Lights On? That video, though... Book Two, Chapter Seven: The Years That Just Happened
Oh, look, it's another artist that absolutely needs to appear in one of these Journeys, as they are one of my favorite discoveries of the current decade. Step right up, Chromeo, it's your time to shine. I thought about getting cute with my Chromeo choice, maybe including a "Sexy Socialite" or a "Night by Night", but really, as far as The Modern Day Hall & Oates are concerned, there can only be one choice. It's the song that introduced me to this Canadian duo, the song I stumbled upon while getting dinner one night in my college days and could not get over how insane the video for the song looked. The song is pretty okay, too..
And I can't think about it No, I can't figure it out It's just the way you're feeling Every time that you're appealing Leaves no room for doubt

Ok seeing Dreams and a Chromeo song means that I definitely have to participate in this for sure now.

From 2010, we move all the way forward to 2014 and this song from one of the big indie darling acts of the last decade. This was actually released as a single (it's also their most recent single), but it was, easily, the song that performed the worst of the three songs to chart on Alt radio from this album. That same album had a song featured in Daryl's indie rankdown.

Green knows me all too well... I also see that someone has piqued your interest... I actually fell for Vampire Weekend around the same time that I fell for Chromeo, even though I had been introduced to Vampire Weekend a couple of years prior. It was 2010 that I listened to "Cousins" for the first time, and I was hooked by the frenetic energy and chaos. When Modern Vampires of the City was released, I found myself falling hard for it, even harder than I fell for "Cousins", and particularly two songs from the album. One is a song that Daryl featured in his Indie rankdown, "Hannah Hunt". The other was a single that didn't perform as well as the previous two singles from this album, but I didn't care about that. All I cared about was the wonderful song that I couldn't stop listening to.
Maybe she's gone and I can't resurrect her The truth is she doesn't need me to protect her We know the true death, the true way of all flesh Everyone's dying, but girl, you're not old yet

but Step is a 2013 song, not 2014 Yeah, it is, but it was a single in 2014. Yeah...that's how we'll justify it! I'm actually kind of amazed that I haven't featured this band in the Journey series until now, honestly. They're a band that I have talked about a lot, a band that I have championed over the last couple of years, and they've quickly become one of the biggest names on rock radio (especially on one format). This song, the seventh song off of this band's debut album, was not chosen to be a single.

hmm...Royal Blood - Loose Change? Green missed it by that much. Hey, here comes another band that was always going to be featured in a Journey rankdown at some point, especially after their debut album was my #1 album of 2014 and one of my favorite albums of the decade. Royal Blood absolutely TOOK MY LIFE OVER in 2014. That debut album was played so much that I probably ruined at least one set of speakers from how often (and how loud) I played that album. There are PLENTY of choices from that album to consider for this rankdown, to be sure, but I wanted to avoid the obvious ones. So, no "Out of the Black", no "Figure It Out", no "Ten Tonne Skeleton", no "Come On Over", no "Little Monster". Let's give the other songs on that album their due. Let's give "Loose Change" its due.
Loose change Another penny in my pocket again No shame Another heart-shaped locket

To 2015, we go! This song has grown on me big time, to the pont where I'd say that it's my second favorite song from that year, period. (No prizes for guessing what my favorite song from 2015 is.) It was the lead single from this "band's" third album, an album that won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year.

Tame Impala - Let It Happen And this time, peacebone missed it by that much. This song is the source of perhaps my biggest music screwup ever, and certainly the biggest turnaround I have ever done on a song. When I first listened to Tame Impala's Currents, I suggested that the critical darling opening song from that album was actually one of the "weaker" tracks from that album at first. When I looked back at the singles from 2015, this was barely in the top 100. I am a tremendous idiot. One year later, I simply could not stop playing that so-called "weak" song. It got to the point where I was comfortable proclaiming it to be my second favorite song of that entire year. The only song I liked more was a song by my favorite band. Even then, I'm wondering right now if it actually IS my favorite song from that year. Over "REAPERS". What the hell was I thinking?
All this running around Trying to cover my shadow An ocean growing inside All the others seem shallow

This song, meanwhile, was the song that I chose as my second-favorite single of the same year, 2015. This song wound up finishing second behind a song that has wound up becoming one of my all-time favorite songs. This is a band that I was introduced to by a prominent member of Pulse, and this song was the second single released from their second album. This was one of my choices for one of the first rock tournaments I took part in. If you're wanting a specific tournament to go back to, make sure you go back to the end of 2015.

That's another one that I thought might go a while without someone guessing it. It was only a matter of time before Agent Fresco appeared in the Journey. In 2015, their Destrier was second on my list of Top Albums from that year. Only Muse topped it. Looking back, it's one of the few times where I feel like the choice that I had made was wrong: There are songs on Drones that are among my favorite Muse songs EVER, but a good chunk of it is either subpar or downright terrible. Meanwhile, Destrier is only growing in my estimation, an album that was in the right place at the right time for me, an album that I never knew that I needed in my life. Just wanted to thank you again for introducing me to them, Devin. You don't know how much I appreciate it.
I know my hands still reach for hell Should I feed them the fire? I know my hands still reach for hell To condemn or to crown?

Okay, let's move forward into the current year. With the end of the year looming, it's about time that we start delving deeper into some more of my favorite songs of the year, and we start with a song that I submitted as part of BOTH a rock tournament and the Summertime Madness tournament this year. Since I've already featured one of the two songs that I used in both in the first Journey, by process of elimination...
