Ouch at #9. I thought hype alone would have secured a top 5 debut.

No way it was going to enter in the top 5 with its streaming.

Did Suit & Tie debut at #3? It debuted at #84 with two first days of airplay, and the following week it jumped to #4 after it's first week of downloads. it eventually hit #3.

He's also hit #11 three times with Carry Out, Like I Love You, and Gone. What a shame. LILY is such an underrated gem on his discography.

Debuts at #5 in Canada, becoming his 16th top 10 hit there. He has 9 more with *JustiNSYNC.

Oof at #9 debut. Considering it will probably also be it's peak, that's not a really good showing for a Justin Timberlake lead single. Good thing the album is only two weeks away, otherwise it'll be a CTTR and Look level disaster for the rollout.

Yeah this is basically his Work Bitch, but at least this (barely) reaches top 10. Work Bitch is a million times more iconic than this will ever be. It’s basically proved that Justin can still get Top 10 based off hype/name alone. Which is awesome, cuz I hope the 2nd single is more melodic in structure.

A three-week number one that helped lead the album to a 1.2 million opening and it is a disaster of a rollout. Nope. It might not have had great longevity on radio, but it set the album up nicely. It was the second single where things fell off. Meanwhile, yeah, disappointing showing if this is his peak.

What a jam. Still loving it and glad it debuted in the Top 10. It's also doing pretty well on airplay.

And, honestly, this has quite a bit of work to do before I would see it as nearly as successful as CTTR and Look. Both of those were pretty legitimate airplay hits in their own right, had TONS upon TONS more video views than Justin, and I am pretty sure both of them stayed in the top 10 on Itunes for more than 11-12 days too. We will see if it grows though.
I wonder if this will impact album sales though. I feel like Justin is one of those people who will open well even with a flop of a first single. Like, if I am wiki-ing correctly, his lowest album sales have been 350K for part 2 of his last cd (do we count that since it was a Part 2?). If we don't, his lowest opening was 430K+

How does Taylor fit in with this? She was cited in the quote I directly responded to? My point wasn't so much about Taylor, but about the use of the word "disaster" to characterize a lead that was a multi-week #1 and led its parent album to a successful start. Supplant Taylor with any other artist's lead bearing similar stats and I would feel the same. I am very interested to see this song play out. Personally, not much of any of Justin's solo work past FutureSex/LoveSounds (barring "Mirrors") has resonated with me. Filthy is particularly polarizing though. He is a bit of a public and media darling. I am curious to see if that is enough to keep this from faceplanting.

If we don't, his lowest opening was 430K+ I think it might fall in line with Eminem's recent numbers (200k), but then again he has the Super Bowl that same week so 300K isn't impossible.

While Look is definitely a hit, I don't think anybody in Taylor's camp is planning on it to fell off the the top 10 before the album drops. Anyway, before we got off topic. As much as I'll cackle if this completely fell off the chart before 20 weeks ala CTTR, this actually grew on me a little bit

Pop might drop this in favor of Supplies... holding nicely on iTunes, though, currently at #9.
Debuted at #6 on the United World Chart, becoming his 20th global top 10.

It used to be songs got pushed and played whether listeners liked them or not, at least from established artists. Sales sort of dictated how hard they could push. Right now it seems to be going the other way. Any resistance is met with "Oh hey lets try this other song and this really wasn't an 'official' release anyway" akin to throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticks. Maybe I'm wrong, but the atmosphere seems to have changed dramatically and rapidly for the top artists.

I wouldn't be surprised if they moved on from this really quickly. I can't imagine the call outs are anything but horrendous.

No reason to continue to invest in something if it's not connecting on the level they want it to. I think they knew going into this that Filthy was, at best, risky for becoming a big radio single with longevity. I've found that after dozens of listens - I think I get its appeal and appreciate the direction - I'm just not excited about hearing it.

I mean to an extent, but radio deals do exist and part of it has to due with some of the risky first single choices that have been going on lately too. Anyways I'd hardly call it a bad thing, can you imagine having this shoved down your throat multiple times per day?

You cannot even hear the words in this song. The background is too loud. It's time to move on.
