So a lot of people said that 2017 was decent, really? 2017 was a weird year, but it certainly wasn't decent, if anything I'd say it was WORSE than 2016. This was such an awful transitional year for music, the tropical house trend was dying, whilst trying to remain relevant, we had a huge explosion of trap that just would not f**king die, a small influx of Latin songs crossing over, including a remix spending a record tying 16 WEEKS AT #1! Not only that, but 2017 just felt like such a draaaaaag, it was like there was not much happening. 1/2 of the year had two songs spend 28 combined weeks at #1, one I really like and one I don't. It was like not much was happening, besides that small influx in late Spring. My point is that I did not like 2017 at all, it was boring, and it was like 2017 was trying to find an identity but ended up being either a s**tty transitional year, or just 2007 but in reverse, especially since instead of a crunk explosion, it's trap. And that's what I'm gonna talk about, and no that is not a typo at all, I am willing to review..The Top 40 Worst Songs of 2017!

40.
Well, time to get this out of the way.
40. Pills & Automobiles by Chris Brown ft. Yo Gotti, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, & Kodak Black
Why is Chris Brown still relevant, I thought his career died years ago? Why did he release a 40+ track double album which almost no one seems to give a damn about? This song is just awful, the vocal effects on Chris in the chorus make his voice even worse than it's been before. Yes, worse than his nasal, squeaky voice in songs like Run It. And it's not like he's saying anything interesting at all. It's just your standard boring brag rap with lyrics about smoking, getting high, f**king girls, and how much money they have to buy things like cars mansions, etc. And then we have the production, which is just your standard boring trap beat with reverb all over it in the worst way possible. Not only that but the chorus is just a repeating "wet" all the time. Oh, and let's not forget the guest features! Yo Gabba Gabba who flubs rhymes like loyal and borin'. A Boogie might have a decent flow, but... "I get money when I want, I can f**k her if I want" Yeah no, you can't. Speaking of rape, Kodak Black. And I hate to say this, but Kodak actually has the best part on this song. His flow is decent, and none of the lyrics are remotely that bad or offensive. Hell I'd say that he does save this from being any higher. But that still doesn't excuse the awful production, and the lyrics of bragging that are all over and the nasal vocals on Chris' voice. Buckle up guy, this is a LONG one.

39.
Oh Katy Perry, why do you do this?
39. Chained To The Rhythm by Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley
I'll be front and say the production is by far the best part. However that doesn't excuse the other elements of this song, namely the lyrics. Whoever thought that making a sad, pathetic excuse of a song to be "woke" and do political/social commentary should have been fired. I'm not kidding, I hate song trying to do political commentary, because they sound preachy, biased and they completely miss their mark 100%. There's also been the discussion that this is actually a song about the state of music, which is hilariously bad considering what the state of music was when this was released. Katy act's like we're "chained to the rhythm" of catchy pop tunes, and I WISH that was the case this year, but that is so wrong. Not only that, but coming from the mouth of Katy Perry makes her come off as a total hypocrite. I cannot buy this song coming from the same girl who made gems like Teenage Dream, Firework, Last Friday Night, Waking Up In Vegas, I Kissed A Girl, California Gurls, and Roar. Also Skip Marley, grandson to legendary Bob Marley is fine, right up until the end where he says... "And we about to riot" Yeah, this particular line really offends me. When I was in my senior year I took a contemporary world affairs class. And I remember one of the things we were talking about in class was about the riots that were going on, especially after the election, the inauguration, and Berkeley. And the entire class agreed with me that those that riot should be arrested on criminal charges for property damage and even injuring those who have the right to self-defense. What that line that Skip saying, is that he is advocating for people to riot, and, no that's not what should happen. I'm sorry but all the good production can get this song so far. I was willing to push this to the dishonorable mentions, but I felt it NEEDED to be said. Also, this video is trying WAAAAAAAAAAAY to hard to push Katy that she is woke. But, if I'm honest, it's not the worst song she released this year, oh God she did worse!

"Pills & Automobiles" is so basic. It's like one of those SNL digital shorts. Chris Brown is starting to look like Flavor Flav.
I still don't know what the hell A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie is. What kind of a name is that?
I liked "Chained To The Rhythm" but it's definitely weaker than earlier singles and songs she has released.

I do like CTTR quite a bit, but I don't find it anything particularly special.
Get ready to be attacked by the Katy Perry fans though...

38.
So instead of giving Missy Elliot a #1 hit with Work It, or Nicki Minaj with Super Bass, we gave the first female rapper since Lauryn Hill to a female version of Kodak Black? Why?
38. Bodak Yellow by Cardi B
This song has had Pulse going on a frenzy and I'll say that it is not necessary. So she got to #1, good for her, but that doesn't mean the song is any good. This song is your basic as Hell brag trap song, the only difference is that a girl is doing it. The beat is just the same trap song, the lyrics are stereotypical bragging about how much money she's got, and oh, this is basically a rip-off of Kodak's No Flockin' flow. And no, that Kodak song won't be on here though, but don't worry, we'll get to him soon. The reason this wasn't higher was because despite being a rip-off flow, Cardi does do it better than Kodak, and the song does have some good energy to it though. But, that doesn't excuse it from being a song that I do hate, and the hype that Pulse had when this was #1 did not help at all. And tbh, I don't see people remembering this song years later, it's very forgettable.

In my opinion, this song is reminiscent of Nicki Minaj at her worst, lol. Although I do think this song is a bit better than the likes of "Stupid Hoe", but that isn't saying much. I do like some of Nicki's tunes. She is a hit or miss, for me.

37.
Country got worse in 2017, but this is not the song you all are thinking.
37. Light It Up by Luke Bryan
I am not a fan of country. I don't hate it, but I just don't get the mass appeal of it. There are some songs that I do like, like Before He Cheats, Love Story and Something Bad, to be specific. But when it comes to bro-country from Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, and Sam Hunt, (Who I'll get to much MUCH later on) yeah.. it sucks. This isn't the worst country song though, but dear God this is embarrassing for Luke. This guy is in his 40s and he is trying so hard and it just fails. He gets off by a girl texting him, that's what Light It Up means. If this was about smoking or lights this could have been mediocre at best. But no, the fact a guy who is in his 40s made a song which is basically about how he gets off on this girl texting him. And then we have the production, which just mixes more elements from trap than country, especially with that fake as Hell beat and trap snares and percussion. I think this is proof that Luke Bryan's career is running on fumes at this point, and good because I don't want more Luke Bryan bro-country crossing over.

I disagree with you on "Chained", but it's absolutely not one of her best, either.
We can 100% agree on one thing, at least: "Light It Up" (and Luke Bryan in general) is an abomination. As someone who grew up surrounded by country (and secretly admiring it), bro country has probably angered me more than anything else in music this decade. Says a lot that this is the second-worst song of its kind this year.

36.
Maroon 5 sucked this year, except until What Lovers Do, but their other two singles were trash.
36. Cold by Maroon 5 ft. Future
I swear Maroon 5 gets worse and worse as the years go by, and this is from the guy that likes songs like One More Night, Maps, Sugar, and Moves Like Jagger. But this is just awful, not as bad as Don't Wanna Know, and.. trust me I'll talk about that soon. But this is just trippy and obnoxious. The production is badly mixed, Adam Levine s a total asshole on this song and Future, dear God his verse is not needed. I am so glad that Maroon 5 dropped this for their album Red Pill Blues and made What Lovers Do their lead off. Because if their album was anything like Don't Wanna Know or Cold, it might have been one of the worst albums of the year.

35.
2016 will be remembered as the year Drake dominated and hit the peak of his commercial success. 2017 will be remember as the year Drake finally died off on the Hot 100. I guess all that overexposure and half-assed musical choices would catch up to him eventually.
35. Fake Love by Drake
I don't really have much to say about this, but it is probably the worst off of More Life anyway. The production feels weird and out of place, especially on an album, (Excuse me, I mean "PLAYLIST") like this. Drake's tone might be decent at best, but it's the lyrics that make this feel despicable. He says that he's got "fake people showin' fake love to me, straight up to my face" which I don't buy for a second. This kind of feels like a diss to his fans, like "these people only like my music because" or something like that. Not only that but he repeats the same phrases in the verses multiple times and it's really aggravating. And the most disappointing part is that this song had four writers. Four writers and they could not come up with anything but to keep repeating the same phrases in the verses. Ugh, I'm just glad that Drake finally stopped charting this year after 8 consecutive years of doing so, that's one good thing I can say about this year.

34.
Well I guess it was a matter of time until this happened.
34. Party by Chris Brown ft. Usher & Gucci Mane.
I have no clue why Usher would work with his terrible clone. It just boggles me why such an amazing R&B artist like Usher would do such a thing, it's basically treason. The producution is shit, it's like a more minimalist version on Yeah, except with no real energy or a good flow or anything that made Yeah a damn great banger, this is just weak. Also Gucci Mane is really not that good, like at all. This is supposed to be a party jam, but his verse just seems more like unnecessary bragging. Although Chris Brown already does that enough on this song as it is. And then we've got Usher's verse and dear God man why?! "It's my birthday with the cake, lick it all, let me eat it" You are not getting off easy by referencing what could very well be one of the worst songs ever created by man, Birthday Cake with Rihanna and Chris Brown. I still cannot believe this was a top 40 hit at all, what are we doing America?

33.
This year, Selena Gomez hit a low point in her career, as the only way for her to stay relevant was to get on EDM songs like Wolves and It Ain't me. But I'm not talking about those, I'm talking about her own songs this time. 33. Bad Liar by Selena Gomez
I like Selena's music more than I should but this is just awful. The beat is annoying, the bassline is awful, the annoying clinging in the chorus is.. well annoying, and I hate her voice, especially when she tries belting in the bridge. Not only that but the writing on this song is so generic and repetitive. The chorus is nothing more than just repeating the words I'm tryin' and no, no, no. This entire song just seems so weak and underdeveloped, it's like she's trying to be sexy but she just doesn't work good enough on this song. I can like, or at least tolerate songs like Good For You and Hands To Myself, but this is a new low that I cannot stand. I'd rather have Selena go back and do what she did in Stars Dance with songs like Come & Get It and Slow Down, not this. {Tags} willapted33, Mylo13 ๐, boysilver400, woods, graham, Bwol, Normi, Willow Rinadoobee Breakfast, Taiga, DistrictTwelve, dhill92, @pjscott11, born, chicken077, Leaf, CF15, scrohr424, Mr. Thonk Eyes
