Big victory for songwriters. The Copyright Royalty Board of the U.S. Library of Congress increased royalty payments to songwriters/music publishers from 10.5% to 15.1% of revenue during the next five years. Like cable carriage deals, expect monthly premiums to increase accordingly since the consumer always pays. The US is going to make streaming services pay more for music

I mean, yeah, good for the songwriters, I guess.

This is AMAZING news. I feel like for the amount of music we have to access with a premium account is worth so much more than $9.99 a month (I'm a student so I pay less ) So I don't mind paying a few dollars extra a month if it means it's going to where it's supposed to go because I really enjoy supporting my favourite artists. I guess we will see how much it will go up, if it will.

This is huge news for the industry. I also don't think consumers will end up paying that much more, but rather, advertisers will/more intrusive ads.

What is unknown, is exactly what the price increase will be. This was to be expected though, prices have been rising steadily on video streaming services for a while now. Only natural to expect the same here.

Only natural to expect the same here. Exactly. That’s why I mentioned cable’s precedent. Video streaming has been doing the same - as they bolster content and people cut the cord (like me). It’s only natural that audio streaming will follow suit. And, I’m very happy that writers are getting a bigger slice.
