Both are great, but I'm personally glad "Drinking Alone" came out on top here. Also worth nothing, but I think it's interesting that out of all the styles she experimented with on this album, the two tracks that leaned in the RnB direction wound up being the top 2.

I did surprisingly well in this! I'm pretty happy with the majority of the results. A fantastic top two and I'm ecstatic Drinking Alone, my #2, won since I had no hope in my #1 making it far.

Perfect winner from such a dud of an album. Honestly when all is said and done with this era the only songs I'll come back to are "Drinking Alone" "Ghosts On The Stereo" and "Love Wins". "Low" almost makes that group but it doesn't come to the same place for me. zaclord 🌈 Thanks for hosting! Now a Carrie extra's rd would be welcome by me since I love most of her one offs lol

How anyone can deny the sheer beauty of Carrie's vocal performance on Low is beyond me!

From this album thread I realised that this album has not been received as well on here as it seemed when it came out. I know this can often be the case as music sinks in and wears out a bit.
From those of you that seem like you dislike or aren’t enthused by this album, what is it you’d like Carrie to change moving forward? Did you prefer “Storyteller” to this album?
(Simply curious)

From those of you that seem like you dislike or aren’t enthused by this album, what is it you’d like Carrie to change moving forward? Did you prefer “Storyteller” to this album? (Simply curious) I would like her to commit to a style, personally. Cry Pretty is just such a schizophrenic album, with elements of just about everything, and most of them are experimental for her. Imo none of those styles actually land with maximum impact as a result, because as soon as you start to get used to one style, she hits you with a new one. If she must keep pushing boundaries, I wouldn't mind hearing a whole album with the sort of smokey arena-rock/modern country mixed with soul vibe that she sets up in the beginning of the album with "Cry Pretty", "Ghosts On The Stereo", and "Low". But tbh, I am starting to get rather sick of "dark" Carrie. Half of Blown Away, followed by everything on Storyteller and Cry Pretty, just sounds so dark. Obviously there's a place for darkness, like on "Blown Away" and "Two Black Cadillacs", which were both masterfully well done. But those ones were counterbalanced by songs like "Good Girl" and "Do You Think About Me". Lately everything is dark. The uptempos like "Renegade Runaway" and "Drinking Alone" have the exact same vibe of mid-tempos like "Dirty Laundry" and "Church Bells" and "Chaser" and "Relapse", which also have the exact same vibe as slow songs like "Choctaw County Affair". A huge part of the problem is Carrie's over-reliance on huge production as of late. I really miss the Carrie that put her voice front and center, as with songs like "Wasted" and "Jesus, Take The Wheel". And there are plenty of early songs that prove Carrie can have a dark edge to her music without burying herself in production, like "Just A Dream" and "Before He Cheats". And tbh, the thing I miss most is her ability to put out a straightforward, fun, uptempo song. Like, modern Carrie could never put out a song like "Get Out Of This Town", because she's too busy trying to be "creative" and thereby struggling to write songs like "Southbound" that just try to be energetic but don't actually have the breathing room to have any sort of believable natural enthusiasm.

Yeah, I’d love something more low key where her voice shines. I love all of “Low,” but the first half is particularly effective. So is “Spinning Bottles.” An album with a heavy dose of that would be killer. ” I still like Cry Pretty but for my money no album of hers has a coherent vision except the debut. Most feel like a collection of random songs, and I usually come away from her albums with 3-5 tracks I love and the rest I never listen to after the first few times.

From those of you that seem like you dislike or aren’t enthused by this album, what is it you’d like Carrie to change moving forward? Did you prefer “Storyteller” to this album? (Simply curious) For me, I do think I prefer Storyteller a bit, but I also wasn't a huge fan of that album either. Storyteller didn't have any bad songs on it, but there were very few songs I LOVED on it. The sound was consistent and everything was good, but it didn't WOW me. Storyteller was just a bit of a letdown for that reason especially following Blown Away, which while isn't my favorite album of hers it does have an incredible amount of A++ material on it - more than any other Carrie album, imo. The thing Cry Pretty has going for it over Storyteller is that there are two incredible songs on it - "Drinking Alone" and "Low" that I'd rank among my top 20 favorite Carrie songs - something that Storyteller lacks. However, unlike Storyteller, Cry Pretty has a bunch of songs that either do nothing for me, or are just not good. So if I were to rank both Storyteller and Cry Pretty together, "Low" and "Drinking Alone" would be my top 2, but most of the rest of the top 10 would consist of Storyteller tracks. I also agree with bboat11 that I wish Carrie would pick a sound and stick to it (at least per album). I feel like her Greatest Hits album is a more cohesive album than Cry Pretty. It's a blessing and a curse that Carrie can do so many different sounds so well, but that's given her a bit of a musical identity crisis now that she has more control over her artistic career. I LOVE Carrie, but that's not her strong suit. She needs to surround herself with good people to guide her through the A&R and production process instead of having complete/majority control over that. I hope she can get back on track with releasing GREAT music with the next era because she's capable of it.

I was casually visiting this thread to do this RD. Then I realized it was due April 5th instead of May 4th lol. Going to check the results now!

(Simply curious) Definitely preferred 'Storyteller', that's my favorite album of hers. Meanwhile I think 'Cry Pretty' is her worst. Besides the points bboat11 brings up, I also wish if she did more "dark" material she'd give different flavours. I feel a lot of the darker material is starting to blend together. Lyrics have long been my favorite part of Country music so I'd like a refocus on well storytelling.
