Unfortunately, I believe this song was DOA.
It was never "come back material" in my book and I don't think a video will help it.

I feel like this video is them saying they are no longer teenagers if that makes sense. Clearly having alcohol, both kissing....etc.
It is very well done, and I love a video that follows the lyrics!

I love this and if any song right now deserves a label to invest resources into a 40+ week chart climb, itâs this one. I hope to see it succeed, itâs my favorite single by them.

Stumbled into this one as an ad on YouTube prior to a song I recently added to my '94 RD coming later this year.
Impressed so far, and I see it growing on me even more. Really hope they can put out an album by the end of the year!

A hint of good news amidst watching this awesome song flounder: Maddie & Tae nab the 2nd slot opening for Carrie Underwood.

Honestly their career would be at a much better place if they didnât release Fly and Shut Up And Fish (as much as I love those songs).
After Girl In A Country Song, it should have been:
2nd: Smoke 3rd: Waitinâ On A Plane 4th: Downside of Growing Up
They probably would have much more momentum right now had they taken that route, tbh.

Hate to say this because I do like this duo, but I think they would be in the exact position theyâre in regardless of what they released after, âGirl In A Countey Song.â

I'd say it was more "Shut Up And Fish" after "Fly" if anything. "Fly" did peak at #9 on the charts which I think is decent for the second single from a young (both age-wise and career-wise) female duo.

I'd say it was more "Shut Up And Fish" after "Fly" if anything. "Fly" did peak at #9 on the charts which I think is decent for the second single from a young (both age-wise and career-wise) female duo. I would say this was a case where even though "Fly" did pretty well in the end, it still completely ruined their momentum. From what I recall, it craaaaaaaawled up the charts, looking like it might flop for several months before finally catching on. By the time it did get big, it simply didn't have any buzz, so even though it was a top 10 hit, Maddie & Tae themselves might as well have fallen off the map in the eyes of the general public after "Girl In A Country Song" peaked. However, you are right that a #9 peak is certainly impressive! Most new (female) artists don't get any extra chances with their followup single, and once it starts flopping their career is pretty much over... So while "Fly" was definitely not a bad song for them to release in the end, I think there is merit to the idea that it ruined their chances of getting any more hits from the album, because by the time it peaked nobody cared anymore... Lol

Well, I wasn't a fan of this song at first listen, but it really grew on me. But it's not going anywhere is it?
On the other hand, I think it's great for them to open for Carrie Underwood tour next year!

I don't think they were going to get anything noticeably bigger than "Fly" as a second single if they'd picked something else, and I think it was necessary to not peg them as just a novelty act. Their momentum would've been better if they'd had new music ready to go right away after the first era, but they took 2 years off from radio, and I think that almost single-handedly did all the damage we're seeing here with this single barely moving: country radio moved on and forgot about them, and now they're starting over at square one on a new label and have to re-establish themselves, as I've said before. It really didn't matter what singles they'd released from their debut record because that was years ago now, and it's very rare for new female country acts to even score a follow-up hit at all, and "Fly" was a bigger success than most ladies get, so not sure why we're nitpicking over that one when the way "Shut Up and Fish" or "Sierra" performed is usually more like the norm for a second single for a female artist.

IMO "Fly" was just a terrible song, so they're lucky it got anywhere.
I do agree that there's no buzz for Maddie & Tae. People who remember them at all remember them only for GiaCS, a novelty song that's now well past its sell-by date. With zero momentum, and a radio climate that's only even more of a sausage fest than when GiaCS was out, they'll probably be working at the White Castle across Broadway from Music Row by 2020.

October 31, 2019 playing the last date of Carrie Underwood's Cry Pretty 360 Tour to White Castle employees in less than two months afterwards would be quite the fall from grace...

I wouldn't throw stones when you reside in a glass house.

The next-highest solo female is Carly Pearce, who's only at #24. 2.) That's why I made that joke.

In the past couple years, more women have been appearing on the charts than when M&T were first getting started.

I'm surprised it's only now starting to get airplay, I've been listening to it for a while.

This will probably be a 40+ week climb unfortunately, but I'm glad to see it's still getting decent adds and setting new peaks.

Matches the #47 peak of "Sierra" this week. This one isn't off to too bad of a start it seems. Slowly headed in the right direction.

Still #48 after 16 weeks... Itâs disappointing that radioâs still treating them like brand new artists after three top 20 singles.

I didnât think, âShut Up and Fishâ made the top 20 but if it did it barely scrapped it. I am disappointed itâs taking a while to move up the charts but not the least bit surprised.

Still #48 after 16 weeks... Itâs disappointing that radioâs still treating them like brand new artists after three top 20 singles. Two Top 20 singles. "Shut Up and Fish" stalled out in the #22 to #24 range from what I remember. I also think the fact that they were absent from radio for close to 2 years really zapped a lot of the momentum built up from their debut album to where it's now like a reset for them as artists (especially since they are on a new label home). It kind of sucks if you're fans of them, since they got such a bad hand in 2017. Also the charts being in such a jam packed state isn't helping. It would benefit a lot of songs if at least a few of LANco, Kip Moore, Carly Pearce (although I think both Kip and Carly both have enough energy for the Top 10), Sugarland (the good sales can't hide the fact that this song has been going nowhere for a while now on radio), Tyler Rich, Rodney Atkins and Travis Denning gave up.
