I'll reveal one more track today. The last list submitted (looks at @antigonerising ) dropped this one down to #12 And landed a perfect ranking in the process! #missionaccomplished In seriousness, every reveal before top 5 is going to hurt a bit b/c all of these songs deserved top 5 in some way. (Exceept for WISY, which is solid but just not comparable to the rest of this album.) I was last minute with this b/c I just couldn't bring myself to 'tank' anything. Shoot, i'm still guilt tripping over the songs I ranked at 6, 7, and 9. So true. These first two were my exceptions, but from here on out I am gonna be bummed about the eliminations in some way.

I don't like "Open Arms" by anyone, really, but Mariah at least makes me pay attention to it for how good it sounds. Still, I thought this would be dead last on my ranking until I re-listened to the album.

Well two hits to the middle of my rankings. I like AC ballads though so not surprising.

I like her live performances of the song more than the album version, she sounds more into it. There's some kind of sadness in those performances, maybe it was the time when her marriage was breaking apart. This one in particular The original is more soulful, I really like that one too but I loved the vocal acrobatics she introduced to the song. It was definitely an attempt to replicate the success of Without You so I am not sure Mariah really wanted it on the album, it looks more like a business decision than a personal one like Without You, and it kinda shows.

I LOVE "Open Arms" - she lead a vocal masterclass with this one. It's actually the only version of the song that I like.

She's done better gospel-influenced numbers before and after, but that just goes to show that she writes this type of music well because this is still great despite being relatively straightforward.
I think this could have gone on Music Box too, and would have been more of a standout on that album.

oh my god, I can´t believe I am free is so low. I just love that song. And y´all wanting to remove the ballads from daydream and putting them on Music Box. Half of the album would´ve been gone, please.

Its a testament to this album that 'I Am Free" is ranked so low. her voice was amazing, the gospel sound is great and its a easy song to get lost in.

I hesitated sending in my rankings because I thought I had "I Am Free" too low at #7, and legit almost swapped it with my #4-ranked WISY, but shrugged and decided that going to the decimal for rankings was unnecessary in an album so strong.
BUT I'm beginning to question this ranking tbh (or my taste level). I just realized I don't have a sense for what the fan favorites on this album are at all. #exposed

This performance in particular is considered to be the ultimate turning point between Daydreamriah and Butterflyriah. :'( I hadn’t heard that before. What does it mean? The vocal inflections, the slightly "spent" vocals, the outfit, hair, make-up all give transition teas. This was officially the last performance of the Daydream era too. Summer of 1996.

IS IT TOOOOO LATE TO CHANGE MY MIND AND MAKE THIS BITCCH RISE???????????????? VOCALLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I should have included that in the 'extras' posts I made. Next reveal in a few minutes...The co-producer expressed gratitude to Mariah for being included on the album.

This is great, but I couldn't bring myself to rank it higher.
I do agree that it would have been nice for her to continue experimenting with Dance remixes. It's ironic that the full-on breakthrough of hip-hop influenced R&B in the late 90s and 00s ended up continuing her commercial appeal in the long run when other AC-influenced acts from the 90s went out of fashion, and afterwards it was the rise of electronic influences and EDM that signaled another change in the zeitgeist where she was left behind. Even if she wasn't fond of that, I think Deep House experts like Disclosure would have been a great fit for her in the mid-10s.

I love this interlude and the way it's dreaminess flows into the more haunting Looking In in the sequencing to close off the album.

I just never know how to judge interludes or intros or the like against more fully realized songs tbh, so it's tough for me to not just rank them toward the bottom, if not last, even when they serve their purpose well.

For me it depends on the interlude and album. I see the "Daydream Interlude" as very different from some of Janet's 30 second interludes that aren't even songs, for instance. To me the "Daydream Interlude" serves both a sonic and thematic purpose while also standing on its own as a song (it's more of a full song than, say, the "Vulnerability Interlude").

Another classic 'Daydream' era moment. You can tell that she was just living this moment when she finally got to play dress-up and get the hell out of the long dresses and act her age; the way she is so naturally bopping her way through the song, clicking her fingers and clapping to the beat is so rarely seen (minus some energetic Make It Happen performances).
It's a shame she never incorporated the song into any of her remixes.

Come on people this isn't any old interlude, this is Daydream Interlude. It's literally heavenly. Even when you consider this as one fourth of the Fantasy Def Club Mix its stellar.
I will never tire of this.

10. "Daydream Interlude" Mariah gives a great disco-diva performance here. Her dance remixes feature perhaps the best singing of her career, and I wish they were more generally known (and that she hadn't almost completely abandoned them post-90s). THIS. I absolutely love her re-sung dance remixes, they are pure gold and nobody really knows about them except the fans. She truly shines when she's freestyling. I hope she embraces her inner disco diva at one her albums in the future, kinda like she did with Meteorite.
