Why Childish Gambino gets away with blatant plagiarism? It's just a blatant Bring Me The Horizon rip-off. Are we just going to pretend that this video doesn't exist? www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tVWt2RDsoM

So I watched the video, dug the f**k out of it. Then looked at the lyric sheet and was like... eh. I just wish the song said something more substantial lyrically, because without the video it isn't nearly as powerful.

I just wish the song said something more substantial lyrically, because without the video it isn't nearly as powerful. I agree. I think the purpose of the song and video is extremely important, especially after all this Kanye stuff, and of course Trump and general America. I also really like the contrast between the happy upbeat parts and then the dark rap parts is really good, it’s like waking up to smell the roses or taking off your rose tinted glasses. However, I don’t think the song itself is that good, especially lyrics. I expected so much more but it doesn’t really say anything. The video is the opposite, especially the shooting scenes. I found them very shocking and disturbing watching, but then I realised.. that is the point. “This Is America”. That I think was a genius move by whoever thought of that. I hope this song does well, though, because, again, this song/message needs to exist right now

the lyrics aren't the greatest here... but the sound of this oh my. Plus he got thugger on it, so that's nice. Overall, easily one of the best songs to be released this year. I could see Donald snagging album of the year tbh.

I agree, I wish the lyrics were more specific and direct too, but on the other hand the whole ambiguity might actually help it become a hit and therefore have more longevity make more cultural impact in general
And we NEED at least some political statements on the charts right now imo.

It got 8,000,000 views on USA Youtube its first day. That is the highest single day since Taylor Swift with Look What You Made Me Do, which also received 8,000,000 views. With its Youtube views, iTunes lead and position (2 but rising) on Apple Music, it actually might be number one on the Hot 100.

The video is fantastic, but the song itself isn't nearly on the same level. It does sound like a hit though.

Secondly, these music video clearly have the same concepts with this whole defeated expectancy thing and violent shooting. The messages behind them are different, but let's not act like Childish Gambino is some kind of genius for coming up with this already trite idea.

So if it's a tired idea that has been done multiple times before why are you singling out Donald's as plagiarism? I can say that Bring Me The Horizon took the concept from Green Day's "Walking Contradiction" and just replaced cars with guns as the violence.

It would need to keep those type of YT views up throughout the week to challenge #1, though. It's way back in airplay and is also behind on Spotify and other streaming.

Sure, but it needs to have more streaming for the week than "NFW" to have a shot at #1. Hard to tell that without actual numbers.

I really like the video, but yeah on first listen the song itself isn’t anything too special and the lyrics are annoying vague.

I don't see much relation to Japan in that song though. Not only is Japan's music industry pretty insular for the most part (aside from South Korean music), so is their culture. So a commentary on the social and political climate of the United States streaming decently for Japan is interesting.
