I was expecting something with more tempo but I'm liking this on first listen! I can understand it being a grower for many but she sounds fantastic and I also appreciate that she led with a song using a more straightforward lyric instead of leaning on metaphor again just because it adds a different dimension to her songwriting. This confirms her sophomore being one of my most anticipated albums of 2019!

It’s not a bad song by any means, but it feels pretty underwhelming. Doesn’t seem like a safe choice for radio either, Pop or country, so struggling to see why this was chosen as the lead single.

Two listens in and I'm loving this! To me, it sounds like nothing currently on country or pop radio. I'm not sure if that will help or hurt it.
This reminds me of some song from maybe the mid-00s, but I can't place it.

Me gusta, different from most of her debut but great nevertheless

I can't put my finger on which song, but isn't the beat the same as one of her songs from the debut album?
I think Maren was trying to go outside the box here, but it doesn't work. It will be interesting how country radio reacts to this and if it hits the top 30 on Billboard or not.

This song might grow on me but as a woman/self motivational song, the lyrics are too generic? It almost works if the subject is male and I cannot see the unique struggle(s) that a woman has.

Sort of, I would need to re-listen to the entire album at some point, or I could be completely wrong.

It should hit Top 30 pretty easily on Billboard, heck I wouldn't be shocked if it's iHeartMedia hourly airplay causes it to be Top 30.

Considering the fact that Maren Morris has yet to miss the Top 10 with any of her singles she should easily hit and stay in the Top 30 and probably even more. I would be flabbergasted if this song doesn't peak at least Top 20.

To me, it’s like Cry Pretty....a great “tour” song, but idk if it is a good “radio” song if that makes sense. I too get a "Cry Pretty" vibe from it, but I feel like this is a lot better musically and lyrically. But I definitely felt this same thing in similarities to CP the first time I heard it. Nice Carrie insult! I’m happy to say as a 10-year lurker who finally became a poster, you all don’t miss a beat. As for “Girl,” I do think it’s a lovely song. Perhaps it’s my age range and life experiences, but I completely identify with it. The era is just getting started and we’ll have a lot of great ground to cover.

Positives: great message, great vocals, great melody and sounds great in a car. Doesn’t stray too far from her sound.
Negatives: slightly underdeveloped lyrics (still in the upper half of radio singles though) production is kinda boring.
Probably my least favourite single from her but still overall a great track. And I’m sure it’ll grow even more on me.
Can’t wait to see how it does!

Especially coming from zaclord 🌈 who is a Carrie fan (I believe). They are both lead singles that are a little out of the box. I think the comparison makes a lot of sense. OP happens to like one a little more than the other. There are not many artists here at Pulse who are as universally liked and respected as Carrie. And even most of the people who don't like her music respect her talent. "I feel like this is a lot better musically and lyrically," is not an insult in any sense of the word. This song has already grown on me from the first few listens. Still not what I was expecting or hoping, but I am liking it more and more with each listen.

Her voice saves this from being a total dud, but I still don't care for it. The production is way too cluttered and pop leaning. Melodically, it does sound like the back half of Hero, but it lacks the chorus melody that made the singles such jams. Hoping this is a weak point for her new album, as I'm still quite excited for it.

The chorus sounds a bit like "Check Please" by Haley Reinhart as well. Not that that's a song many people know, but I immediately heard the similarities.

Don't like it a bit, but it isn't terrible or anything. I hope it's like someone mentioned before in this thread, this being like Legends, which was very underwhelming (but still good), and the era was later saved by Miss Me More. Maren obviously has a lot of support from everywhere, so even if this flops (which I can't see happening), she will still have momentum to spare, and subsequent singles can still take her to that dream of hers of being a pop star lol (That last comment was a little tongue in cheek)

Before it was saved by “Miss You More,” (which isn’t even a hit yet) she had a song that totally bombed (“I Hate Love Songs”). I’m not sure what I’m hoping for now, but it’s not that.

I like the message of this one but I think the melody could be stronger and the production is very cluttered like kw9461 mentioned. This is definitely my least favorite from Maren so far and I really enjoyed her debut album. Vocals, like others have said, is the strongest part of the song. The song doesn't scream lead single though -- I really don't see this becoming a big radio hit. I imagine it can rise fairly quickly to the top 20-30 but after that? I think radio will show this resistance. The lyrics/message will fly over some listeners heads and I'm sure the same could be said for PD's. It could still have a strong run in sales and streams but visioning radio stations putting this in heavy rotation is hard to imagine, if I'm being honest.

This is doing pretty well in sales. I wouldn't be surprised if it charts. Granted, outside of Ariana Grande, her only competition was Logic and Utada Hikaru. Nonetheless, this being #3 on iTunes is impressive.

A lot of us, myself included, thought "Rich" would be a tough sell to radio and would be really polarizing, but it wound up having one of the smoothest chart runs of her career thus far and went all the way to the top 5 as a fourth single, so I'm gonna remain cautiously optimistic that this one will do fine at radio. I can see this one performing more like the first two singles off Hero, but keeping in mind how "Rich" did, I'm rather hopeful. I think at worst case scenario it maybe finds its way into the top 20 and flames out in the mid teens, which while not the best start to her sophomore album era on the charts, wouldn't be all that bad.

I really, really like this. I do worry about this as a lead single on 2019 country radio (after looking at what happened to great lead singles like "Vice" and "Speak To A Girl"). But as a song, this is fantastic. Maren is on track to be a superstar, and great quality music like this can only bolster that. I'm just hoping that radio and the public get on board.

I think this is Greg Kurstin's first real foray into country music? I know he did a couple songs with the Courtyard Hounds several years ago, but nothing this mainstream.

For all the comparisons, I don't think this is as good as "Legends" or "Cry Pretty." I don't hate it. It's just sort of there. I was a bit letdown, but I'm hoping there's better to come from the new album.

Not seeing the comparisons in the slightest.
I think this is great. It’s a narration of her experience as a woman in this genre, and I’m thrilled that she continues to be one of the voices carrying a torch and is helping lead the pack. She’s got a lot of guts releasing a song like this, at a time like this (for the industry, and for the nation/world), entering just her second official album era ever. This is typically the time in an artist’s career that signals their lasting power, and while I think MM has long since solidified her place as a legitimate game-player, I’m especially curious to see how radio reacts to this song.
Then again, maybe I shouldn’t put any stock or interest in radio anyways. They’ve long since made their intentions about women abundantly clear. Anyways, I’m very happy with “Girl,” and I think it’s an excellent addition to her already-stellar catalog.

Not seeing the comparisons in the slightest. People are literally just saying it is a lead single that is different from what they were expecting, and may be a tough sell at radio as a result. Which is similar to songs like "Cry Pretty" and "Legends". Not sure what there is to "not see" about that

In any case, you can dial the snark *all* the way down and take a breather, bb.
