I’m a fan of Chris Young. I’ve loved everything he’s released to radio so far. He’s one of the most consistent charting artists in country music today. Literally everything he’s released with the exception of “Neon” and his first couple singles has been a top 5 hit if not a #1 on country radio. This guy is more country than just about anyone out there right now and shows no signs of selling out to pop. He’s just releasing what he thinks will do well on radio and for him it’s paying off big time.

Damn shame "Where I Go When I Drink" was never a single. What a missed opportunity.

His last album era was a total non event and neither single were too big of hits and he has definitely cooled off. For me Chris Young has been on autopilot for a while now with his music. He is kind of a mini Blake Shelton in my eyes right now. Just coasting along where every song for the most part sounds interchangeable and are unmemorable. That and his voice sounds better with a neo traditional sound than the neutered pop country sound he has right now imo.

Outside radio, his singles sell horribly and he’s generally forgettable. He lost the best side of him when he took off that cowboy hat

He’s touring arenas for the first time this album cycle right? I think I’ve seen him mention it a few times. He seems ok with the decisions he’s made. (And I say this as someone who doesn’t like him very much. 😂)

Did you hear his last few albums?

Chris Young used to be comfortably in my top 3 for male artists, but yeah, no question his music ain't what it used to be. I thought his I'm Comin' Over album was pretty solid and the 3 singles they picked from it were the perfect selections they could've made, but his A.M. and Losing Sleep albums are awful outside of like 2 or 3 songs a piece, and the highlights on both records would be among the weakest offerings if included on one of his superior records like Neon. Also definitely disagree 100% that he's "more country than just about anyone out there right now," lol.

As if there isn’t enough songs about being raised on the radio, raised on country, etc. It’s definitely a fad right now. It will probably name drop other songs too.

Having been pretty critical of the song choices and overall sound of the "Losing Sleep" project from the very beginning, I actually like what I hear from the little snippet he's put out on Twitter. Sounds much more like the CY of old. Let's hope this time he's putting together a much higher quality of real country songs that better fit that great country voice of his. He says he's doing a cover or two for this next project and is taking suggestions. He's taking votes on a cover of the week with Alan Jackson, Merle Haggard, George Strait, Joe Diffie, or Willie Nelson as the options.
Not from the above options, but should he send to radio one of the old Keith Whitley tunes he's performed so spectacularly over the years, it would be huge. CY would do well with most any cover of some of the great country singers of the past. For example, I never heard anyone do any of Randy Travis's songs better than Young.

Title was not mentioned in the issue but this single will impact radio on January 28th, according to Country Aircheck's year-end PDF.

The irony if this is sonically anything like his previous two singles from his last era...
I like a lot of Chris's music a lot, but I would love for him to make more songs like "Sober Saturday Night", "Tomorrow", and "You" and less like "Hangin' On", "Losing Sleep" and "Think of You".

I listened to the clip on Instagram from a few weeks back. It sounds absolutely terrible sonically, and right on par with everything he’s released since 2014.
The lyrics are, of course, name dropping old songs. Something we’ve never ever heard from in this genre.

How the HELL can you go from being the next Keith Whitley to the next Russell Dickerson? Literally such a shame. I get so pissed off anymore whenever I even see this guys name. Throwing all that talent away for trends. F*cking sickening.
Chris Young is more than a sellout. This is a complete ending of what could’ve been a hall of fame career. I’ve never seen anything like this.
“The Dashboard” to “Hangin’ On”. HOW?

Whitley's discography is 30 years old, but the songs still hold up to the point that if Chris Young were to do a knockout cover, I could see radio being all over it. Carrie Underwood's cover of Randy Travis' "I Told You So" did pretty well for her.

Carrie is a much bigger star then Chris and I would argue that “I told you so” is one of her most forgettable singles. As someone who hates this pop bro country junk as much as the next person I can’t say I blame CY for going this route. Jon Pardi & Midland are not getting more popular than Bret Young or Kane Brown And Chris is just trying to stay as relavent as long as he can. Chris has had like 7 #1’s in a row so what he is doing is working.

While he isn't exactly "traditional" he definitely isn't pop country like Chris Young is now. What he is doing may have worked, but this past album cycle was likely his lowest impact era since he broke out.

Rock guitars laid over a pop beat. Not sure what country he was raised on, but it sure as hell didn't sound like that clip. I'll reserve full judgement until I hear the whole song, but that wasn't a promising clip at all.

The song is essentially the typical cliches/lifestyle choices made by people who are country, not necessarily raised on past country music. That clip didn’t excite me. It’s astonishing what’s happened to Young since 2013. He’s kept his radio success up but his music bores me to tears and his production has been close to unbearable as you can get these days. I haven’t heard the full studio version, just word of mouth, but that with the clip makes me skeptical.
