Next up, a song that was tied with "The River" in points, but won the tiebreaker due to multiple #2 placements vs. multiple #3 placements.

The song was written by Garth, Larry Bastian and Pat Alger, and was based on a real life situation where Garth ran into his high school girlfriend while out with his then-wife, Sandy. The song had a fairly quick rise up the charts, and was part of a key group of singles early on in Garth's career ("The Dance", "Friends In Low Places", "The Thunder Rolls", "If Tomorrow Never Comes") that launched him to superstardom.

The song also became Garth's fourth #1 from the project. With "The Thunder Rolls" leaving here, that also means that we say goodbye to Garth's most successful album, No Fences. It would go on to be certified 17 times platinum for shipping 17 million copies. The album helped cement Garth's legacy as a country superstar, thanks in large part to the four singles, "Friends In Low Places", "Unanswered Prayers", "Two Of A Kind, Workin' On A Full House" and this one, "The Thunder Rolls". "Wild Horses" would later be released as a fifth single in 2000, a decade after the album's initial release. "The Thunder Rolls" was somewhat controversial at the time, thanks in large part to its music video, which was banned by CMT and TNN almost immediately after its release. VH1 however did play the video, and it ended up winning the CMA for Music Video of the Year, and was nominated for the Grammy for Best Music Video - Short Form, which includes videos from all genres of music. The song itself was a huge success, entering at #19, which at the time was the record for the highest debut on Billboard's Country Airplay chart (then called Hot Country Singles & Tracks). That was a huge achievement, especially since it was a fourth single. This song, like "Friends In Low Places", has an extra verse that Garth includes in concerts, but it does not appear on the studio recording of the song. Tanya Tucker initially recorded the song, but did not include it on a studio album. It does appear on a boxed set that she released in the mid-90s. Her recording does include the extra verse.

With it, the album is also eliminated here as well. The song reached #1 in 1993. It was written by Garth, Pat Alger and his wife at the time, Sandy Mahl. It is the only song Garth recorded that Sandy had a hand in writing. It was fairly consistent here - while it didn't receive any top 2 ranks, it was in all but two top 30s. It received 9 top 10 rankings and an additional 3 top 20 rankings, which allowed it to narrowly pull ahead to #6.

With #s 9 and 10 tying with 287 points, and our #6 receiving 283 points, that means that only 4 points separated #10 and #6. The entire top 10 was very, very close in a few spots, and a couple of very high or very low rankings could easily make a 6-7 position difference. #1 and #2 are only separated by 1 point, as are #3 and #4. #5 is closer in points to #10 than it is to #4. Any final top 5 predictions?

I'm also rooting for Callin' Baton Rouge ♥ And I am happy that those 5 songs (in the top 5) are on top of the songs in the 6-10 range.

The final 90s songs that have two mentions are from the middle of the decade: "The Night Will Only Know" from In Pieces and "Belleau Wood" from Sevens, both mentioned by both tim and someguy. The songs really couldn't be more different. "The Night Will Only Know" tells the story of two married people having an affair with each other who witness a murder, but choose not to speak up about it, as they do not want their affair to be revealed. "Belleau Wood", on the other hand, is also a story song, but it is a Christmas song about the truce from fighting between German and American soldiers during World War I, over the Christmas period. It reached #41 on Billboard's Country Singles chart, due to unsolicited airplay. Collin Raye also sings a song about the same scenario, "It Could Happen Again" on his Christmas album The Gift. someguy George Strait Junkie @xfer tim austin Kanenrá:ke toomuchboy Troublemaker castleoblivion26 gardyfan sabre14 Cody Wants Out... collinkottke CoJoFan Andy bboat11 kw9461 Glove Slap

I'm pleasantly surprised "Standing Outside the Fire" and "Callin' Baton Rouge" made it so far.

There is absolutely NO excuse for "The Thunder Rolls" to have missed the top 5.

Also, I'm 100% here for a "Beaches Of Cheyenne" upset victory!!!! What a fantastic surprise that would be!!! But let's be real, it will probably be "The Dance" (and rightfully so).

I could love to see "Beaches Of Cheyenne" win, that song is incredible, but I'd also be okay with "Standing Outside the Fire" or "The Dance" winning. Love "Callin' Baton Rouge" and "Much Too Young" but not as much as those other 3!

#5 - Standing Outside The FireBillboard Country Airplay peak: #3 Highest Ranking: #3 Cody Wants Out...Lowest Ranking : #61 Kanenrá:keTotal Points: 276 Average Rank: 15.333 Cody Wants Out... - 3 castleoblivion26 – 4 CoJoFan - 5 Glove Slap - 6 Andy - 7 collinkottke - 7 toomuchboy – 7 kw9461 - 8 austin – 8 tim - 9 Troublemaker - 9 @xfer - 13 someguy – 14 sabre14 – 22 gardyfan - 28 bboat11 – 30 George Strait Junkie - 35 Kanenrá:ke – 61 Kicking off our top 5 is "Standing Outside The Fire", the third single from In Pieces. The song was very successful, reaching #3 in 1994. The song is strongly tied to the Special Olympics, as the music video features a boy with Down Syndrome who opts to participate in his school's mainstream track and field event, rather than the special meet. It is one of his most memorable videos, and Garth at one point revealed that most letters he receives about the song are from Special Olympics participants. The song was always on track to do well here. It didn't receive any top two rankings, but did receive 11 top 10s, with two additional top 20s. On the flip side, Kanenrá:ke finally loses his last place ranking here. Without it, this would have been #3.

I'll be extremely happy if "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" or "Callin' Baton Rouge" can win this.
I like the "Dance" too but overplayed and don't enjoy nearly as much as the other two.

The top 2 ran away with this, finishing with 194 and 195 points. It was back and forth between the two of them pretty much the entire time.

Wow, one point difference.
I know other than "Friends in Low Places", "The Dance" is his signature hit so I wasn't expecting it to lose out to "Callin' Baton Rouge" but I love "Callin' Baton Rouge" and rooting for it to take #1. Glad it made it this far. It's such a favorite at any country bar or country night I go to -- people adore singing along to it.
Glad "Much Too Young" did as well as it did too. Just a straight-up country tune from the late 80's/early 90's that takes me back to country's traditional resurgence.

Thanks to everyone for participating! It was fun re-listening to a lot of the songs that shaped my initial love of country music in the 1990s.

The Dance was one of the very first songs of his that I truly loved. I remember loving that little bit of extension in the Double Live version. That said, I was so ready for Callin' Baton Rouge to win!
