This is now #53 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Let the ranting begin.

I'm not a purist at all but I'm really hoping radio doesn't take to this. I've said it before with other songs too but this is easily the least country song to chart on Country Airplay ever.

I'm no purist myself, but still, there's gotta be a line somewhere. The fact that enough stations have played this to allow it to chart just blows my mind. Whatever stations are playing it outta be ashamed of themselves.

He's called "Lil Nas X", please, correct the name title of the thread.

Also for the record, I know Sony is looking at possibly sending this to radio but it hasn't actually been sent yet.
This is charting with unsolicited airplay.

Is Billy Ray Cyrus credited on the charts? I could see country radio playing that version more so than the original. Either way, I'd rather not see this get any traction.

I... don't hate this. However, I have no doubt that Todd in the Shadows is going to do a video on it.

So when are we having a Pulse funeral for the country purists that post here?
(Side note: this is the worst thing I've ever heard in my entire life)

I'm not a 'country purist' by any means, but I really don't appreciate an apparent hip-hop track being played, pushed to, or supported by the country format. This song is awful, but that's not even my main problem here... it's the fact that it doesn't belong anywhere near country music despite the lyrics... which, by the way, aren't really 'country' in any way either! Sorry, but genre has to mean SOMETHING still.

The Billy Ray Cyrus remix is outselling the original, so he'll most likely get credited on next weeks Hot 100 Chart.

From what I’ve read (which admittedly isn’t much since this song is awful), this song’s existence basically feels like a trolling of the country charts. It doesn’t seem the intentions to promote this are very pure. I’ve read some other online comments that have made me a little concerned, things like “well if Florida Georgia Line can be played on country radio, than why can’t this?”. This isn’t even hick hop which has been getting semi-popular with guys like Upchurch and Colt Ford. This is just a standard, cheaply made trap beat that is using the controversy of charting on country music to make more headlines and garner attention. I’m not going to allow myself to become upset if and when this becomes a #1 song on the Hot Country Songs chart, but I’d be lying if I don’t find this whole situation to be annoying and a prime example of how internet/social media can be detrimental.

Also for the record, I know Sony is looking at possibly sending this to radio but it hasn't actually been sent yet. This is charting with unsolicited airplay. Sony Music Nashville CEO Randy Goodman has said that they’re now testing the song in some country markets in today’s Billboard Bulletin. The strategy of labeling “Old Town Road” country on iTunes and streaming is really what got this started. That caused it to chart on Hot Country Songs, then starting appearing towards the top of iTunes and Spotify. After Billboard removed it, it added even more fuel to the fire. I don’t think this is Country musically in anyway, the melody, instrumentation or production. It’s a hip hop track. The lyrics could be construed as country with but to me personally, that alone doesn’t make a song country. This song however does stand out much more being labeled country and it’s mentioned in the Billboard article I linked that more other genre acts might follow suit to gain more traction with sales and streams. It shows the power of marketing. Lil Nas X and Columbia might believe this is country (which is amazing) or if they know it’s purely a way to get this more traction with the general public in sales, streams and genre-crossing airplay. My “non-country listening” friends are more or less using this song as a jab at country music, thinking it should be in the genre, even if they can’t name one other country song charting right now...lol. I don’t think this will go anywhere other than the bottom portion of the airplay chart but Bobby Bones’ program has a huge audience (as evidence by this charting at #53 from syndicated spins alone). All it takes is a couple large audience stations to reach the 40’s of the airplay chart and even top 40.

this must be a joke. Just how desperate is Billy Ray Cyrus? He's one of the most irrilevant one hit wonders ever. If anyone had to name 3 Billy Ray Cyrus songs, those would probably be "Achy Breaky Heart", "Achy Breaky Heart 2", "Achy Breaky Heart 25th anniversary edition". Yet he's out there waiting for occasions like this to find new ways to embarass himself and put country music to shame. Thanks to this idiot, this putrid song will probably be re-included in the Hot Country Songs chart. And it will be number 1 obviously. Apparently Aldean's disgusting efforts (such as "Dirt Road Anthem") or FGL's were not bad enough, we will probably have LIL NAS X topping the country charts. Can we get Travis Tritt back now? I'd love to hear what he thinks about this Billy Ray after this.

What I don’t like about this situation is that people who don’t listen to country radio (or even country music) think they can decide what’s country and what’s not. And then they play the race card when anyone complains about it.

^ Just because I’m not a fan of country, it doesn’t mean I don’t recognize it.
Original version is not a material for Country chart, BRC’s version IS...and that was the point of the remix.

I think the song is fine and catchy for a rap/hip-hop song, heck, I think it's kind of catchy... but in no means is it country. And that includes the Billy Ray Cyrus remix. Adding a verse and a half of a culturally irrelevant (other than the fact that he is the dad of a couple pop stars) one-hit wonder with some twang and changing virtually nothing else in the song does not make it country.
If you think this song is country you are either a troll or don't understand country music at all. When George Strait, hell, when Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean record a song with the word "boobies" in the lyrics, let me know. That's when I'll even start to listen to the argument that this is country.

If Aldean or Luke Bryan released a song with the lines "My life is a movie / bull ridin' and boobies" the "Country Music Has Reached a New Low!! articles would be inescapable.

Not that I disagree with this particular case but people who listen to country radio have decided they don’t want women singers so are they not country and is that not sexist?

Of course it’s sexist... But that’s an entirely different problem that has more to do with flawed callout research and a minority of the country radio audience that is sexist.

least country song to chart on Country Airplay ever. I assume you're pointing out the Taylor Swift song? I was vocal about being against her songs charting that had no connection to the genre. Regardless, I still think "Old Town Road" is the least country song to ever chart on Country Airplay. I'm very very familiar with the history of the chart and there have been other egregious examples over the years.

I'd love to hear what he thinks about this Billy Ray after this. I know what you're getting after, but calling Billy Ray Cyrus a one-hit wonder is irresponsible. He has 7 top ten songs, 13 top 40 songs, and a couple #1 albums. Outside of the country music realm he's known for one song and being the father of Miley Cyrus, but I think most posters on this board understand he's a talented singer with a good, but by no means excellent, career. On topic with this song, I really don't mind it, but it's not the right genre. The era of 2:00 and under songs is here to stay until streaming royalties change (currently payments are made per song, not per minute/second, which means if a label releases a bunch of short songs, more songs can be played, and thus more money), and country will likely follow suit in the next year or two. I'm actually surprised that this isn't #1 on Country Songs honestly...there are no rules about a song needing to be charting on Airplay (plus this was on the chart the week before). Why isn't this the #1 song?

This charted because Bobby Bones--supposed ambassador for real country artists working their asses off to make country music--played it, stating that it's country because "he grew up in the south in a trailer park."
Radio trends have shifted dramatically in the past couple years, and I have trouble seeing the same radio who just let a toned down acoustic song dripping with fiddle and steel spend 7 weeks at #1 also allow this song much airplay.
The dude's manager even flat-out said that this is hip hop and was only listed as country to help it up the charts. Not to mention the fact that they thought adding BRC would make it country just shows how clueless about the genre they are.
For all of you who like seeing "purists" angry, this is the type of thing that happens when you give a little. FGL leads to Sam Hunt which leads to this being called country. In my opinion, this is equally as country as Thomas Rhett's current single (not at all) so I'm really not surprised it's gotten to this point.
