Honestly, it's not a bad song. Perhaps the best of its particular subgenre since I Play Chicken with The Train. But I can't see too many country stations going on board with this. If they thought Downtown's Dead and Vacation were too out there...well, they just got another think coming. Totally forgot that Downtown's Dead existed, what ever happened to Sam Hunt anyways? I'm assuming he's just collecting his Body Like A Backroad money.

Last I've heard, Sam was on tour with Luke Bryan, possibly writing new material.

I take comfort in knowing that country radio probably won't have this song on high rotation although I totally fear this song re-entering the Hot Country Songs chart and dominating it. I shudder.

If this even makes the top 40 of country airplay then they better release Five Finger Death Punch’s single “Blue On Black” that features Brantley Gilbert to radio as well.

It doesn't appear this song has re-entered Hot Country Songs.

gained 409 spins in the last 7 days. it's coming. LIL NAS X Old Town Road 409 91 Leaders Starters Like 90% of this is from The Bobby Bones show playing it (which is broadcast on iHeart stations), which is enough for it to re-enter the airplay charts. That said, less than 5 total stations are actually giving this song any intentional spins, so the 91 stations figure is misleading, and "Old Town Road" is not turning into a hit at country radio.

Yes, almost all of the stations reporting spins for this are iHeartMedia and nearly all have reported 7 spins...which indicates The Bobby Bones Show. There’s 3 stations reporting 12-24 spins, which look like legitimate adds or markets that are testing the song. I do know there are programmers out there for other radio companies who will not touch this for their market. Bobby Bones is the most impactful on-air personality in the country format (he got “Burning House” by Cam to be an OTV pick), his show can single-handedly get a song to chart, because his show is syndicated to so many monitored stations.
This will re-enter Billboard Country Airplay on Monday with more spins and audience than two weeks ago when it charted. I don’t see it becoming a sizable hit at the country format though. This would alienate too many listeners, especially the demographic over the age of 30. I know country radio plays other pop songs “branded” as country (looking at you “Look What God Gave Her”) but this is so far away sonically from the format that heavy resistance would be shown in testing. Since it’s such a big topic of conversation right now, it will continue to get some minor play and sell/stream extremely well but turning into a top 20-25 hit on Country Airplay? I don’t see that forthcoming.

The Billy Ray version just got officially serviced. Serviced where? I haven't gotten anything in my Play MPE inbox. The remix in on All Access' country section but the original version has been on their page for a few weeks. Sony Music Nashville (who would back it) has not sent this to country stations however. They still could, which is why Randy Goodman (Sony Music Nashville CEO) is testing the song but as of right now, it hasn't been sent to country radio with the purpose of promoting it through Sony's Nashville division, which is what will happen if it ends up happening. Stations can download the song at their discretion before that though, which is how the early spins are happening. Most stations download a song from Play MPE.

Promo Only sent it out on Friday with their Country releases for the month of June (not sure why they do it so far in advance for Country, lol).

All the releases there for June are ones that have been sent to country radio already. My guess is Sony Nashville will end up officially throwing it out to the country format at some point (through Play MPE), since it doesn't cost much but I'm not sure they're going to end up promoting it, like they would Sony Nashville signed artists. This would be a track to let the buzz and word of mouth carry it at radio (like Bobby Bones has already) and see how far it gets.

Yeah, Promo Only is one of the places where my station gets music from. I'm assuming it won't get actively pushed, as it'll be more of a FYC.

Can’t the same thing be said for Thomas Rhett’s new single? No. Thomas Rhett has some roots in country at least vocally, and instrumental wise sounds like something Sam Hunt would produce. Pop and soul fits better in country music than rap.

You could throw George Strait, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and George Jones all on this song and it would still not be country enough to be considered a country song. To any country station adding this garbage: i hope you all go bankrupt.

What if hypothetically it becomes a minor country airplay hit, with say 20 or more stations playing it? Are you saying it should never chart on the country chart?

Me personally, I don't think it should chart at all because it is not country. Billboard will do what they want same with country radio but that doesn't mean I have to like it or agree with their decision to acknowledge and label this song as country and sell it as a country song. I just want Billboard and country radio to have a backbone and not play this song,
