"You should be sad" is out this Friday. There's also track descriptions going around. This could either be an incredible album, or an awful one.
Based off some of the descriptions, there was no reason for her not to put "Nightmare" on the album.

The third single off Manic, "You should be sad" is out now!
So far, this is my ranking of the era:
1) You should be sad 2) Graveyard 3) Finally // beautiful stranger 4) clementine / Without Me 5) Suga's Interlude
I'm a little concerned however, of how this is going to do. It seems like she's losing some of her audience with these new songs, and there hasn't really been a hit since the album was announced. I hope "You should be sad" does well though. It's her most radio ready track since "Without Me" and has a great hook and interesting production choices.
I think dropping "You should be sad" with the music video now was a smart move especially since the video does have some people talking already, so I hope the song and video generates hype for the album.
Anyways, really looking forward to hearing "Ashley", "3am" and "killing boys"!

As a day 1 Halsey fan, I am a little...confused. What's with this newfound country-lite obsession? I know the girl is literally all over the place, but she has always at least had a strong identity musically and I feel she is losing some of that in an attempt to branch out. I mean, the last two songs have been fine but...I dunno if I buy this style from her.

I'm excited for this album but I don't see where it's headed. I think she wants to express what being bipolar feels like but I'm curious to see what the rest of the songs sound like.
On another note, I became obsessed to the Juice WRLD remix of "Without Me". The solo version is one of my most played songs ever but I vibe with the remix more now.

I've never been a huge Halsey fan but I cannot wait to listen to this album on Friday. Her mini doco series on youtube has really made me stan.

First review of Manic from Rolling Stones, giving her 4 stars out of 5.
This sounds absolutely fantastic... I'm ready for her to blow me away.

I'M ON THE FLOOR THESE SNIPPETS
Ashley, Forever... (is a long time), Dominic's Interlude, 3am, Alanis' Interlude, and Still Learning all sound INCREDIBLE. Still Learning is giving me Roman Holiday vibes which is my favorite track from her.
Can't judge I HATE EVERYBODY and killing boys yet since she didn't give us much.

Listening to the record so far, currently 8 tracks in
3am is THAT bitch, its giving me the nostalgic pop rock vibes of the mid 2000s and the lyrics are a MOOOOOD.
I like all that I've heard so far aside from Clementine which is just alright imo, the album flows together very well so far.
Currently now listening to Without Me

Hearing a lot of mixed reviews honestly, but it's funny to me how the people who are liking the album the most are non-stans.
Really excited for 3am after hearing that! I loved the snippet we got.

Finished the album and I have to say, the album is really good and imo tops HFK
I think her vocals have definitely grown, the lyricism is great, and the album flows very well
Alanis's Interlude, 3am, Killing Boys, 929, Graveyard.
The whole record is really good, only song idc about is Clementine and Suga's Interlude.
I'm still confused why she didn't include Nightmare cause it fits like a glove in the record and is still one of her best songs.

Does Halsey tour in the US much and if yes what size venues does she play. I'm a very casual fan of her's but LOVE a few songs of hers including her new single. (current fave) I have been pretty impressed with what I have seen live of her in the last year and was wondering if she could become a good touring artist in the future.

(current fave) I have been pretty impressed with what I have seen live of her in the last year and was wondering if she could become a good touring artist in the future. Manic will be her third headlining tour, and there is a US leg with 26 dates (plus one Canadian date). He previous tour for Hopeless Fountain Kingdom took place in midsize venues - reported attendance for US dates ranged from 5,500 to 9,700. I only quickly skimmed through the Manic venue list but I noticed a lot of amphitheatres and pavilions this time around. Something I noticed with the HFK tour is that the venues which reported attendance were a bit all over the place, with some only selling 65% or 70% of available tickets and others selling out completely. I'm guessing that her team went for amphitheatres this time for the flexibility. If she 'only' sells out the seated sections it still looks a packed out crowd, and if she needs more room than that they can open up the lawn areas. Regardless, it looks like she's well on her way to becoming a consistent touring act.

I'm still confused why she didn't include Nightmare cause it fits like a glove in the record and is still one of her best songs. IMO Nightmare fits sonically but not thematically/lyrically. The album is v much about her looking inward at herself and her faults/insecurities and other issues while Nightmare is more a comment on society.

First listen review of Manic. To be updated.
1. Ashley (8.5/10) Loved the intro and I love the sound on this. I can see some similarities to the sonic direction of 'Badlands'. Cool opener. Didn't really focus on the lyrics but I liked what I picked up.
2. clementine (7/10) This song is such a grower. Not a "grew to love it" kind of grower but it's a very pleasant listen.
3. Graveyard (8.5/10) Honestly, this is such a cool song. Love the production and I love the hook. Not much to add here.
4. You should be sad (9.5/10) I hate when all the pre-release tracks are back to back in the tracklist BUT I can't complain. This might as well become one of my favorite songs of 2020. It's very simple yet very effective. Great single pick for the release week promo.
5. Forever ... (is a long time) (6/10) Wow that's such a different sound. It plays between dark and sparkly, all within a very cinematic range.
6. Dominic's Interlude (6.5/10) WAIT I didn't realize this was a different song. This interlude is weird. And cute. And weird. I dig it.
7. I HATE EVERYBODY (7/10) I'm losing it. I missed the track switch again. This album was made to be consumed & appreciated as an album lol. This was very fun. Very me in the lyrics.
8. 3am (7.5/10) The 2000's pop rock comparisons are very spot on. This is an obvious future single. I think. I can picture myself jamming to it. I can't wait to learn the lyrics.
9. Without Me (10/10) The single bias is real. I should've probably left it without a mark? But no. I obviously adore this song. One of my favorite songs of the previous decade. Simplicity is key.
10. Finally // beautiful stranger (7/10) I think I've only listened to this once or twice before. I can't help but think of every song this reminds me of. There's a little bit of Gaga, some Alanis, maybe even Brandi Carlile lol. I really like the melodies tbh.
11. Alanis' Interlude (7.5/10) Tell me one reason this is one of my favorite first listens. I love the production. I enjoyed this a bit more than "3am". Plus... Turns out my pussy is a wonderland.
12. killing boys (8/10) The way the verse starts made me think of "Rude", yes, THAT 2014 multi-week #1, "Rude" and now I can't unhear it. One of the strongest tracks on the album, and closer to the electro-heavy side of 'Badlands'.
13. SUGA's Interlude (6/10) Very chill and just as long as it should be. Nice, smooth production but I don't see myself coming back to this one.
14. More (9/10) Knowing me as well as I think I do, this is going to end up being one of my top favorites (if it isn't already). Doesn't really go anywhere but it hits all the right spots.
15. Still Learning (9/10) Now, I tried my best to not use this word.... but this right here is a BOP. Very close to "Eastside" but it goes a bit harder. Louis Bell's involvement is obvious. Great track.
16. 929 (8.5/10) Really like the lyrics on this one. And it's one of these songs where you can't help but pay attention to what the artist's saying. I could see this song being played right before the ending of a film. Make it a bit more uplifting and theatrical and it could be on Dear Evan Hansen. Definitely a closer.
Rating: 78,4/100 Notes: This is a cool album. Most of the songs sound like growers. I hope they are too. I think 78,4 is very generous but it's a 70% kind of album.

This is the most excited I've been for an album in years. If "Graveyard" and "you should be sad" are any indication it will be one of my favorites of the year. Still mad about "Nightmare" though.

I've only listened to "killing boys" and "Still Learning" so far since I'm impatient and I'm literally obsessed. Already better than the pre-release tracks. I can't wait for the rest.

I don't know how I feel about this after one full listen. It lacks the many highs of HFK but overall it was an easier listen than it somehow. I think it lacks great hooks because the songwriting and production are great as usual. Alanis' Interlude caught me off guard. I loved that one! A couple of potential growers in the middle of the tracklist and the last 3 songs were unneeded imo.

I think one of those records strengths over HFK is that it feels mature
The writing and tone feels more grown and it fits well, I also think this album manages to capture the charm she had from Badlands and the sound progression from HFK.

Killing Boys is just so addictive and 3am is the right dose of nostalgia and moody vibes that I need.

I saw her in 2018 for HFK Tour in the Bay Area (Shoreline Amphitheater) and she got the crowd going, had good production value, and definitely plays the hits (even a piano version of Closer!). She's going to play there again this tour, but I'll unfortunately not be around here. Otherwise would definitely go, just finished listening to the new album and it's pretty great!

Okay, I've calmed down and I'm ready to share my thoughts. This is such a beautiful and fun body of work. It's very cohesive while still remaining consistent and the transitions are amazing! I'll never get sick of the Dominic's Interlude-I HATE EVERYBODY-3am transitions. The album is a great evolution for her and shows how versatile she is without trying too hard. The production is fairly simple but in a very strong way, and it's also VERY artistic and unique which makes it very special. Currently tied with Rare as my favorite album of the year so far.
Here's my ranking and thoughts on each track:
1. Still Learning: Y'all can call this generic or dated but I love this SO much. The production is fun and really pretty, the chorus is great, the pre-chorus and bridge are the best parts of the song. Maybe I just needed this song in my life right now, but it's such a relaxing, mellow, fun song about learning to love yourself and the struggles of it and it's excellent. Was also co-written with Ed Sheeran which is weird cause typically I don't like songs he co-writes on very often. Anyway I love this song and it's my baby and I WILL be blasting this for the rest of eternity. 10/10 1. killing boys: I can't express how MAD I am that this song is so short. Even shorter than an INTERLUDE DAMMIT! The production on this is so unique and fun and completely unexpected considering she said it was angry. I guess she meant lyrically. I LOVE the sample at the beginning of the song, and vocally this is probably one of the best songs she's ever sounded on. I wish it didn't end so abruptly but I also wish it didn't end at all... There's just something so infectious about this track and I love it. It kinda reminds me of like "State of Grace" by Taylor, and "Graveyard" and kinda mashed into this masterpiece? Also the Uma Thurman lyric took me out! I needed to take a minute after hearing that lmfao. I'm obsessed with this. 10/10 3. 3am: One of my favorite things is the beginning when we're going from "I HATE EVERYBODY" and going into the fast paced ANTHEM that is this song. This NEEDS to be a single at some point. I don't even entirely know what to say about the track cause I'm at a loss for words. Another infectious as hell chorus with GREAT lyrics, and I'm obsessed with the "Lalalalalalalala" parts. Stuck in my head already dammit! Also obsessed with the lyrics in verse 2 and the bridge. Also the voice mail about "Without Me" then transitioning into the track! The excellence! "I'm reckless, treat it like a necklace, Take a different version and I try it on for size with everybody that I know and will you please pick up the f**king phone?" 9.5/10 4. You should be sad: A fantastic use of country, rock and pop elements into a song. And the chorus is incredibly infectious. The bridge is also so beautiful. There's just... so many thoughts I have on this track I can't even name them all. One of her best songs, and probably her best single. 9.5/10 5. Ashley: The instrumental is so interesting. It's like bright and sounds like you're in space at first, then drops into the darker production then is bright again. It's a fantastic opener, maybe her best; and I'm also obsessed with the lyrics on this and her vocals are very strong. The only thing that threw me off at first was the uneventful transition into the chorus, but now that I've listened around 3-4 times, It's one of my favorite parts. I love the speaking part at the end too. The fact the character is named clementine is simply brilliant. 9/10 6. Graveyard: I'm convinced this song will simply never age! The production is incredibly fun and unique and the structure is constructed in a very interesting way. Nothing I've ever heard before, even though it's a simple pop song. There's something about it that's different. Still deserved so much better on radio! "It's funny how the warning signs can feel like they're butterflies *gasp!*" 9/10 7. Finally // beautiful stranger: This is easily one of the BEST songs she's ever written. The lyrics are some of my favorite off the album and is easily an album/career highlight. The instrumental fits perfectly with her voice, the lyrics are unique and sweet, and not the mention the great music video it has. Also sounds great within the album. Just... such a cute song. I love it. 9/10 8. Forever... (is a long time): This song took me off guard in the greatest way possible. I wasn't expecting such a theatrical masterpiece. She used so many intrumentals and the transition to "Dominic's Interlude" is fantastic. I love the way she's singing, and the lyrics are some of my favorite off this album. The piano interlude is also gorgeous. 8.5/10 9. Alanis' Interlude: This is the bisexual anthem we DESERVED! "Your pussy's a wonderland" DO IT B!TCH KILL ME! I'm obsessed with the beat and production on this. Kinda reminds me of "Mother's Daughter" but chiller. Alanis' voice is taking a second to get used to since it's not what I was expecting since I never listened to her before, but this track is great and the best of the interludes. I don't think anything on this album confused me more than Alanis' verse. What is she saying I'm LOST. 8.5/10 10. More: This track is so dreamy and pretty. I love the lyrics, I love the build up. Her emotion in the track shows, and the chorus is just... so pretty. I just wanna sway and dance alone with myself in a completely empty room elegantly with this playing in the background... it's so pretty. The bridge with the little like... xylophone or something? My ears can't pick it up but it's simply beautiful. It's a special track. I love it. This playing right before "Still Learning" is a great transition as well. 8/10 11. I HATE EVERYBODY: Lord, was I not expecting this cutesy dreamy bop with such a loud title. It kinda reminds me of "I Forgot That You Existed" by Taylor but dreamier. I love the lyrics, such a mood. And the build up with the choruses are great! 8/10 12. 929: I love this sweet little track. Her laughing at the end and her little commentary is so cute. Also the lyrics are AMAZING and I don't mind that the track doesn't go anywhere's cause the lyrics and vocals make up for it. She really goes all out, and apparently this was recorded in one take which somehow makes me appreciate it more! 8/10 13. Without Me: The dominating chart topping radio popping queen herself! This has aged for me due to it being overplayed, but it actually sounds really good within the album, but at the same time, stands out in a way it shouldn't if that makes sense. I feel like it's placement in the album is a little awkward and the only flaw in my opinion? But I also can't really see it anywhere's else. It wasn't meant for the album in the first place. 7.5/10 14. clementine: She's a cute lil song. Now that I'm hearing it with the album I appreciate it a lot more. It was the perfect song for after "Ashley". Also lyrically quite amazing. Apparently the shouting is meant to represent the Ashley side, and the soft vocals are Halsey. Learning all these little details made me appreciate it more. Still not a favorite though. 7/10 15. Dominic's Interlude: This song is... weird. Probably not one I'll go back to very off. I like the harmonies and how it transitions into "I HATE EVERYBODY" but it threw me off how Halsey doesn't even have vocals on the song? I like the "Talk to your man, tell him he's got bad news coming" part though. It's fairly anthemic. I just don't see myself going back to it. 6.5/10 16. SUGA's Interlude: The instrumental of this song is pretty and all but I just personally don't like BTS and it doesn't really go anywhere. Just a pretty boring track, but set's up the tracks after it fairly well. Not the worst song in the world, but It's not a favorite. One of the only skips. 5/10
And that's that! I'd give the album probably 8.5 or 9/10. This is easily my favorite body of work from her.

Considering that I am a casual fan of her and have liked just a handful of her songs, I actually enjoyed this. It's a solid album.
My favorites are "Alanis' Interlude", "Killing Boys", "3am", and "Still Learning."
I would really love for "Alanis' Interlude" to be the next single even thought the subject matter is a bit too sexual for radio, but it just has to be somehow.
I really do wish "Nightmare" was included as a bonus track even though it doesn't totally fit thematically, but I can see why it was not a part of the final tracklist.

3am, Still Learning and I Hate Everybody are my top 3 as of right now. This album is so much better than I expected even though I had decently high expectations. Very curious to hear the target bonus track though.
