Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber's 'I Don't Care' Headed for No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 Debut
News
By Gary Trust | May 15, 2019 2:02 PM EDT
The song could mark the third track in as many weeks blocked by "Old Town Road."
Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber's new single "I Don't Care" could launch at No. 2 on next week's Billboard Hot 100 (dated May 25).
The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and digital sales data.
The track, released at midnight ET Friday, May 10, could arrive on the chart with more than 40 million in airplay audience, 30 million U.S. streams and 60,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 16, according to industry projections and building Nielsen Music data.
Meanwhile, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, should score a seventh week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with over 80 million U.S. streams, 80 million airplay audience impressions and 40,000 sold.
Sheeran is seeking his seventh Hot 100 top 10 and Bieber should add his 15th. While "Care" marks their first song co-billed as artists, Sheeran co-wrote two Bieber top 10s: "Love Yourself" (No. 1 for two weeks in February 2016) and Major Lazer's "Cold Water," featuring Bieber and MO (No. 2, August 2016).
Sheeran and Bieber also contributed vocals to Lil Dicky's recent No. 17 Hot 100 hit "Earth" (of course, channeling a koala bear and baboon, respectively).
If "Care" starts at No. 2 on the Hot 100, it would mark the third consecutive week in which a song surged to the runner-up spot below streaming monster "Road." On the latest chart, dated May 18, Shawn Mendes' "If I Can't Have You" bows at No. 2, a week after Taylor Swift's "Me!," featuring Brendon Urie, blasted 100-2 following its first full week of tracking.
The top 10 of the May 25-dated Hot 100 is scheduled to be revealed Monday (May 20), with all charts updating Tuesday (May 21) on Billboard.com.

Maroon 5's 'Girls Like You' Breaks Record For Longest Reign by a Group On Adult Contemporary Chart
5/20/2019 by Gary Trust
The song rules for a 23rd week, besting the No. 1 run of Train's 'Hey, Soul Sister.'
Maroon 5's "Girls Like You" breaks the record for the longest No. 1 run ever by a group on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart, as the song rules for a 23rd week (on the list dated May 25).
The track tops Train's "Hey, Soul Sister," which led for 22 weeks in 2010-11.
"Girls" boasts the third-longest AC command among all acts and is a week from tying for the second-longest domination:
Most Weeks at No. 1 on Adult Contemporary Chart 28, "Drift Away," Uncle Kracker feat. Dobie Gray, beginning June 7, 2003 24, "Shape of You," Ed Sheeran, May 6, 2017 23, "Girls Like You," Maroon 5, Nov. 10, 2018 22, "Perfect, Ed Sheeran, Feb. 24, 2018 22, "Hey, Soul Sister," Train, July 3, 2010 21, "Hello," Adele, Nov. 28, 2015 21, "Breakaway," Kelly Clarkson, March 12, 2005 21, "A New Day Has Come," Celine Dion, March 30, 2002 20, "Just the Way You Are," Bruno Mars, Feb. 5, 2011
The AC chart ranks titles by weekly plays on a panel of 86 adult contemporary stations, according to Nielsen Music. The survey began in Billboard's pages (as the "Easy Listening" chart) on July 17, 1961; once Nielsen data began powering the chart exactly 32 years later (July 17, 1993), lengthy reigns became much more common than before.

Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Tops Billboard Hot 100 for Seventh Week, Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber's 'I Don't Care' Debuts at No. 2
5/20/2019 by Gary TrustPlus, Billie Eilish earns her first top five hit with "Bad Guy." Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, leads the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a seventh week. The song fends off Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber's "I Don't Care," which blasts in at No. 2. Plus, Billie Eilish achieves her first top five Hot 100 hit, as "Bad Guy" bounds from No. 9 to No. 4. Let's run down the top 10 of the newest Hot 100 (dated May 25), which blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and digital sales data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (May 21). As on the Hot 100, "Road" rules the Streaming Songs chart for a seventh week, with 103.1 million U.S. streams (down 1%) in the week ending May 16, according to Nielsen Music. The song set the weekly streaming record following the April 5 arrival of its remix with Cyrus, and now claims six of the eight biggest streaming weeks ever: Total weekly U.S. streams, Title, Artist, Chart date 143 million, "Old Town Road," Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, April 20, 2019 125.2 million, "Old Town Road," April 27, 2019 116.2 million, "In My Feelings," Drake, July 28, 2018 114.4 million, "Old Town Road," May 4, 2019 106.2 million, "In My Feelings," Aug. 4, 2018 104.1 million, "Old Town Road," May 18, 2019 104 million, "Old Town Road," May 11, 2019 103.1 million, "Old Town Road," May 25, 2019 Volume for "Road" should surge on next week's charts (dated June 1) following the Friday (May 17) premiere of its official video. The track dips to No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart, after four weeks at No. 1, with 69,000 downloads sold (down 12%) in the week ending May 16. On the Radio Songs chart, "Road" pushes 4-3, with 83.8 million audience impressions, up 8%, in the week ending May 19. It also takes over atop both the Rhythmic Songs (2-1) and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop (7-1) format airplay charts, marking Lil Nas X's first No. 1s on any Billboard radio rankings. Cyrus, meanwhile, scores his first No. 1 on an airplay tally since his breakthrough smash "Achy Breaky Heart" dominated Country Airplay for five weeks in May and June 1992. "Road" concurrently crowns the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a seventh week each. Sheeran and Bieber's "I Don't Care," released at midnight ET Friday, May 10, soars onto the Hot 100 at No. 2, as it opens at No. 1 on Digital Song Sales (77,000) and No. 3 on Streaming Songs (34.1 million) and charges 33-13 on Radio Songs (49.1 million). Like "Road," the official video for "Care" premiered Friday (May 17). Top 10 totals: Bieber banks his 15th Hot 100 top 10 and Sheeran adds his seventh. Bieber and Sheeran also contributed vocals to Lil Dicky's recent No. 17 Hot 100 hit "Earth," in the roles of, respectively, a baboon (who's like a man, just less advanced, and … they have other differences …) and a koala bear (that sleeps all the time; so what? It's cute). No. 1 in sales: Bieber adds his ninth Digital Song Sales No. 1 and 30th top 10. Sheeran scores his fourth No. 1 and 10th top 10. Taylor Swift leads all artists with 16 No. 1s and 45 top 10s on the tally. Most No. 2 debuts: Bieber extends his mark for the most No. 2 entrances on the Hot 100 to four. He previously opened at the runner-up spot with "Boyfriend" (April 14, 2012), "Sorry" (Nov. 14, 2015) and "Cold Water" (Aug. 13, 2016). Of those songs, "Sorry" went on to hit No. 1 (for three weeks). "Care" is the 28th single to debut at No. 2 on the Hot 100. Mariah Carey made the first such arrival with "Always Be My Baby" (April 6, 1996), which subsequently reigned for two weeks. More Max Martin: Sheeran and Bieber co-wrote "Care" with Max Martin, among the song's six authors. Martin boasts 22 Hot 100 No. 1s and nine hits that have hit No. 2 (including "Care"). He last reached such heights as a writer via Ariana Grande's "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," which debuted at its No. 2 peak in February. Jonas Brothers' former one-week Hot 100 leader "Sucker" rises 4-3 and becomes the trio's first No. 1 on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart. It spends a fifth week atop Pop Songs, where it's also the act's first No. 1. Billie Eilish notches her first top five Hot 100 hit as "Bad Guy" roars 9-4, besting its prior No. 7 peak. The track returns to its No. 2 high on Streaming Songs (from No. 3), up 4% to 39.9 million U.S. streams; rises 11-8 on Digital Song Sales (15,000, up 15%); and debuts at No. 43 on Radio Songs (24.1 million, up 42%). Post Malone's "Wow." rebounds 6-5 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 2, and his and Swae Lee's one-week No. 1 "Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)" rises 7-6. Sam Smith and Normani's "Dancing With a Stranger" revisits the Hot 100's top 10 and its No. 7 high (from No. 11), as it rules Radio Songs for a second week (106.6 million, up 4%). Taylor Swift's "Me!," featuring Brendon Urie, drops 3-8 on the Hot 100, after arriving at No. 2 two weeks ago, and Khalid re-enters the top 10 (12-9) with his No. 8-peaking "Talk," which becomes his fourth Radio Songs top 10 (12-6; 70.2 million, up 21%, good for top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100). "Talk" tops the Hot R&B Songs chart for a fourth week. Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Halsey's two-week No. 1 "Without Me" backtracks 8-10, as it ties for the eighth-most weeks spent in the top 10 in the chart's 60-year history: Most weeks in Hot 100's top 10 33, "Girls Like You," Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B, 2018-19 33, "Shape of You," Ed Sheeran, 2017 32, "Sicko Mode," Travis Scott, 2018-19 32, "Closer," The Chainsmokers feat. Ask Billboard: What Hot 100 No. 1 Has 'Road'-Blocked the Most Songs That Peaked at No. 2?
5/20/2019 by Gary Trust
Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" is among the hits that have led long enough to keep multiple hits a spot from the summit.
Submit questions about Billboard charts, as well as general music musings, to askbb@billboard.com. Please include your first and last name, as well as your city, state and country, if outside the U.S. Or, tweet @gthot20
'ROAD'-BLOCKED
Hi Gary,
I've noticed that, as of this week, on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated May 25), Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, has held off four songs that have, so far, peaked at No. 2: Post Malone's "Wow."; Taylor Swift's "Me!," featuring Brendon Urie; Shawn Mendes' "If I Can't Have You"; and, again, as of now, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber's "I Don't Care."
Which Hot 100 No. 1 has kept the most songs peaking in the silver medal position?
Mark Blankenship @iamblankenship
Hi Mark,
Lil Nas X isn't horsing around, as "Old Town Road" is now in the discussion of the Hot 100 No. 1s to reign long enough to keep a significant succession of challengers peaking at No. 2.
Streaming has been a major factor in the song's domination, as it now boasts six of the eight biggest streaming weeks ever.
If the four songs cited above remain No. 2-peaking hits on the Hot 100, "Road" would join four other No. 1s in blocking the second-most runners-up.
Here's a recap of the Hot 100 No. 1s under which four songs have each peaked at No. 2. Notably, Swift (if "Me!" remains a No. 2 hit) has factored into the last two such instances. In fact, star power abounds among the No. 2 hits below, with Rihanna also on the list below twice, in the company of Lady Gaga, Drake and another Cyrus, while a Mariah Carey No. 1 even kept its follow-up from the top spot.
"Old Town Road," Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, seven weeks at No. 1 (to date), 2019 "Wow.," Post Malone "Me!," Taylor Swift feat. Brendon Urie "If I Can't Have You," Shawn Mendes "I Don't Care," Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber
"TiK ToK," Ke$ha, nine weeks at No. 1, 2010 "Replay," Iyaz "Bad Romance," Lady Gaga "Today Was a Fairytale," Taylor Swift "We Are the World 25: For Haiti," Artists for Haiti
"I Gotta Feeling," The Black Eyed Peas, 14 weeks at No. 1, 2009 "Best I Ever Had," Drake "You Belong With Me," Taylor Swift "Party in the U.S.A.," Miley Cyrus "Run This Town," JAY-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West
"We Belong Together," Mariah Carey, 14 weeks at No. 1, 2005 "Inside Your Heaven," Bo Bice "Pon de Replay," Rihanna "Don't Cha," The Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes "Shake It Off," Mariah Carey
"You Light Up My Life," Debby Boone, 10 weeks at No. 1, 1977 "Keep It Comin' Love," KC and the Sunshine Band "Nobody Does It Better," Carly Simon "Boogie Nights," Heatwave "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," Crystal Gayle
Those five No. 1s, however, share second place for keeping the most songs peaking at No. 2. Two leaders each barricaded five songs a rank shy of the summit. (And both were more than able to keep up with Joneses.)
"(Everything I Do) I Do It for You," Bryan Adams, seven weeks at No. 1, 1991 "Right Here, Right Now," Jesus Jones "P.A.S.S.I.O.N.," Rhythm Syndicate "Every Heartbeat," Amy Grant "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over," Lenny Kravitz "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)," Roxette
"The Theme From 'A Summer Place'," Percy Faith and His Orchestra, nine weeks at No. 1, 1960 "Handy Man," Jimmy Jones "He'll Have to Go," Jim Reeves "Wild One," Bobby Rydell "Puppy Love," Paul Anka "Greenfields," The Brothers Four
With the No. 1 run of "Old Town Road" ongoing, and reaction to the song's official video, which premiered Friday (May 17), set to impact next week's Hot 100, we'll see if the song can tie the record for keeping the most hits peaking at No. 2.
BILL(Y/IE)BOARD
Hi Gary,
It's great that Billy Ray Cyrus, as featured on Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," has joined other singers named Billy to top the Hot 100. The full list: Billy Davis Jr., Billy Idol, Billy Joel, Billy Ocean, Billy Paul, Billy Preston, Billy Swan and Billy Vera & the Beaters.
It's also nice to see, thanks to her hit "Bad Guy," Billie Eilish share space in the top 10 with Billy Ray.
It reminds me of the '90s when "Kiss the Rain" from Billie Myers and "Girlfriend" and "Day & Night" from Billie Piper were on the charts in the U.S. and UK.
Jesper Tan Subang Jaya, Malaysia
Thanks Jesper.
While nine male artists named Billy have now topped the Hot 100, we'll see if Billie Eilish can become the first Billie to reign. This week, "Bad Guy" becomes her first top five Hot 100 hit, jumping 9-4.
When it comes to No. 1 song titles atop the Hot 100, however, "Billie" leads "Billy," two-to-one:
"Ode to Billie Joe," Bobbie Gentry, 1967 "Billy, Don't Be a Hero," Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, 1974 "Billie Jean," Michael Jackson, 1983

Billie Eilish Scores First Airplay Chart No. 1 as 'Bury a Friend' Tops Alternative Songs
5/20/2019 by Kevin Rutherford
The track is one of Eilish's three concurrent radio hits.
Billie Eilish earns her first No. 1 on a Billboard radio airplay chart, with "Bury a Friend" bumping 2-1 on the Alternative Songs tally dated May 25.
Eilish previously reached No. 7 on the chart with "You Should See Me in a Crown" in December. Meanwhile, her third entry on the chart, "Bad Guy," rises 35-28 (and breaks into the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, pushing 9-4).
Eilish becomes the first act to score a first Alternative Songs leader in 2019. Marshmello last landed an initial leader, with "Happier" (with Bastille), in November.
More accolades for Eilish: she's the first solo woman to top Alternative Songs since Alice Merton, whose "No Roots" hit the summit in February 2018, and the 10th solo woman in a lead role to rule in the tally's three-decade history. After a 17-year drought, four solo women have now led since 2013:

Eilish is the youngest solo artist to rule Alternative Songs since Lorde, who was 16 when "Royals" crowned the chart in August 2013; Eilish turned 17 in December.
"Bury a Friend" also reaches a new weekly audience high on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart at No. 6, up 5% to 6.9 million impressions, according to Nielsen Music.
After peaking at No. 14 on the Hot 100 dated Feb. 16, "Bury a Friend" has remained on the tally each week, this week ranking at No. 47.
"Bury a Friend" is one of three concurrently charting radio hits for Eilish. Along with its Alternative Songs ascent, "Bad Guy" climbs 25-22 on Pop Songs and debuts at No. 39 on Adult Pop Songs, while "When the Party's Over" bullets at its No. 19 high on Pop Songs.
The three tracks are from When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Eilish's debut full-length, which entered atop the Billboard 200 dated April 13 with 313,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week. The LP has remained in the Billboard 200's top four each week since and made a return trip to No. 1 on the May 4-dated ranking.

Eli Young Band's 'Love Ain't' Tops Country Airplay Chart
5/21/2019 by Jim Asker
EYB banks its fourth leader, while Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum launch in the top 25.
Eli Young Band banks its fourth No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart, and first since "Drunk Last Night," which led the list dated Dec. 28, 2013, as "Love Ain't" climbs 2-1 on the May 25-dated tally.
The song reigns in its 49th week on the chart, up 8% to 38.6 million impressions, according to Nielsen Music. The song completes the longest journey to the apex since Canaan Smith's "Love You Like That" took the same amount of time in 2014-15. The longest run to the top belongs to Chris Young's "Voices": 51 weeks, over two cycles, in 2008 and 2010-11.
EYB first led Country Airplay with "Crazy Girl" (November 2011), followed by "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" (July 2012).
WHAT'S NEW Keith Urban's "We Were," co-written by Eric Church, debuts at No. 24 on Country Airplay with 10.9 million audience impressions, following its Wednesday, May 13, arrival. Urban tallies the fifth-highest start among his 45 career entries.
On Hot Country Songs (which blends airplay, streaming and sales data), "We Were" enters at No. 28.
Plus, Lady Antebellum's "What If I Never Get Over You" debuts at No. 25 on Country Airplay (8.6 million), after its release Friday, May 17.
"Never" marks Lady A's 28th Country Airplay appearance and its first on Big Machine Label Group (after the act previously charted on Capitol Nashville). The trio ties its best bow: "Downtown" debuted at No. 25 in April 2013.
Notably, Urban and Lady A's arrivals mark the first instance of two songs starting in the top 25 of Country Airplay simultaneously since the chart's January 1990 inception. The prior best such one-two opening punch: On Feb. 18, 2017, Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road" and Zac Brown Band's "My Old Man" began at Nos. 21 and 26, respectively.

Blake Shelton's 'God's Country' Crowns Hot Country Songs Chart
5/21/2019 by Jim Asker
Shelton notches his first leader since 2013.
Blake Shelton scores his 14th No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and first since "Sure Be Cool If You Did" led for five weeks in March and April 2013, as "God's Country" rises 2-1 in its eighth week on the airplay-, streaming- and sales-driven survey (dated May 25).
"Honestly, I wasn't even looking for songs, or to go in the studio, but my producer [Scott Hendricks] called me one say and said, 'I've got a few songs you need to listen to,' and 'God's Country' was the first one that he played," Shelton tells Billboard. "And, man, it stopped me in my tracks and I called him and said, 'We've got to record this now.' I love the song and think it really fills a spot musically that's missing in country music right now and I'm so glad the fans like it as much as I do."
"Country" concurrently climbs into the top 10 on the Country Airplay chart (11-10), becoming his 32nd top 10, with a 13% gain to 23.4 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. The song also surges by 26% to 26,000 downloads sold, although it dips to No. 2 after six weeks atop Country Digital Song Sales, and up 6% to 10.8 million U.S. streams, despite a 2-4 retreat on Country Streaming Songs.
Shelton first topped Hot Country Songs with his debut hit "Austin" for five weeks in 2001.
COMBS HOISTS "BEER" Following its first full week of tracking, Luke Combs' "Beer Never Broke My Heart," released May 8, romps 12-3 on Hot Country Songs, becoming his sixth top 10. The total includes two No. 1s: "When It Rains It Pours" and "Beautiful Crazy."
"Beer" bumps 2-1 on Country Digital Songs (26,000 sold), becoming Combs' second No. 1 on the list, following "Crazy," which led for seven weeks. His new hit bounds onto Country Streaming Songs at No. 2 with 11 million U.S. streams, marking the best first full week of streaming ever for a country song. It tops the 7 million that Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road" drew in its first full frame in February 2017.
Combs performed "Beer" on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 9. The song is from Combs' EP The Prequel, due June 7.
Meanwhile, Combs' debut LP This One's for You logs its 35th week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums (28,000 equivalent album units, up 5%) and moves into a tie for the fifth-longest reign with Taylor Swift's Fearless and the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack; with those sets from 2008 and 2000, respectively, Combs' 2017 album ties them for the longest rule of any title released this century.
Shania Twain's 1997 album Come On Over holds the record for the most time at No. 1 (50 weeks) in the chart's history, which dates to 1964.

Ava Max's 'Sweet But Psycho' Caps Second-Longest Rise to Streaming Songs Chart's Top 30 5/22/2019 by Kevin Rutherford In its 19th week on the list, the track hits the top 30 for the first time, garnering 15.8 million streams.
In its 19th straight week on the Streaming Songs chart, Ava Max’s “Sweet But Psycho” makes its first appearance in the top 30 on the May 25-dated list. The track moves 33-30 with 15.8 million streams earned in the week ending May 16, according to Nielsen Music.
“Psycho” and its 19-week climb to the top 30 is the second-slowest trip to the region since the tally began in 2013, following The Weeknd’s “Often,” which took 20 nonconsecutive weeks to hit the top 30 on Sept. 19, 2015 (but eight months after the track debuted on the chart). Therefore, “Psycho” becomes the slowest continuous rise since a song’s initial debut to the top 30.
The song concurrently bullets at its No. 3 peak on the Pop Songs airplay chart and leaps 7-4 on Adult Pop Songs. It's been building its profile since it first appeared on the Streaming Songs chart at No. 48 on the Jan. 19-dated tally.
It’s also spent the last nine weeks in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 11 for two weeks (May 4-11). It rises 13-12 on the Hot 100 dated May 25, bulleting with its largest amount of chart points yet.
