There have been a lot of rock rankdowns, both chart-based and personally selected. Despite this long extensive history, there are hundreds of songs that, though you might assume they've been ranked by now, they simply haven't. And in terms of genre/scene/era, these songs come from all over the place. So I figured I'd dispense with particular themes and just have these vastly different songs face off. I've compiled 4 of these rankdowns, so the fun can last for as long as possible! (Oh, and thanks to James for the title inspiration) Acquaint yourself with these songs thoroughly, then PM me your ranking of all of them from favorite (#1) to least favorite (#36). Leave the artist names in or not, either way is fine--and by this point I've learned that non-numbered lists are actually easier to insert, but I won't say you should or shouldn't number. After sending your list, you may make changes to your ranks as long as you do so before the deadline. Results are determined by adding up each person's ranks for each song; the song with the least points wins. The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind The Cramps - Human Fly Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman Disco Inferno - The Last Dance Black Sabbath - Snowblind Led Zeppelin - Over The Hills And Far Away Link Wray - Rumble Aerosmith - Back In the Saddle Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat Meat Puppets - Plateau Adolescents - Amoeba The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City Iggy Pop - The Passenger Type O Negative - Love You to Death Jackson Browne - Running On Empty Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven James Gang - Funk #49 Prefab Sprout - When Love Breaks Down Department S - Is Vic There? The Pogues - A Pair of Brown Eyes Jimi Hendrix - Spanish Castle Magic Liquid Liquid - Cavern Badfinger - No Matter What Bo Diddley - Who Do You Love UFO - Lights Out The Ruts - Babylon's Burning David Bowie - Sound and Vision Pantera - Cemetery Gates The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays The Triffids - Wide Open Road George Harrison - What Is Life Heart - Mistral Wind ZZ Top - La Grange Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On Every song here used to be on Spotify, but Link Wray's label decided to screw around and take the original "Rumble" off the platform {songs without artist names}Friday On My Mind Human Fly Hurdy Gurdy Man Oh, Pretty Woman The Last Dance Snowblind Over The Hills And Far Away Rumble Back In the Saddle The Mercy Seat Plateau Amoeba Summer in the City The Passenger Love You to Death Running On Empty Diamonds and Rust Roll Over Beethoven Funk #49 When Love Breaks Down Is Vic There? Ok I've put together my tag list so now we're really up and running If you saw this thread when it was first posted, take note of this change to the song list: Cliff Richard's "Move It" has been replaced by The Triffids' "Wide Open Road".

Nice eclectic list. Right there in the middle is a song from one of my all time favorite albums. Several songs will be first listen for me, but I like the challenge.

So, when I opened this rankdown, the last two weeks of July/first week of August looked like fair game in terms of RD deadlines. Now, it's become a bit crowded. I also thought I could make the deadline shorter since this is the smallest rankdown I've hosted. But since we're only at 3 ballots (thanks to Doc for the latest list), the limited size seems to not have helped that much for submissions. Therefore, I'm pushing the date back a week, to August 5. This means you still have ~3 weeks (since I didn't tag yesterday) to submit a list for this rankdown.

Ok, on-time Monday tags are back again. Peacebone's entry to the arena within the past hour makes for 4 lists, but obvious I crave more, especially if you believe you have a unique perspective on this collection of songs. The deadline is now 2 weeks away. As always, I'm going to be gradually tagging more frequently from this point.

For a fair chunk of you I assume 92 Alt is still the priority. But I just want to make sure I keep prodding as often as I can. This is due in 9 days. I don't mind waiting a bit for your ballot if I know you're interested, though. A little reminder that this playlist is only about 2 1/2 hours long! Not too hard, right? And thanks again to Beno for sending our fifth list.

Alright, two pieces of good news. 1) I've received 2 lists within the last 16 hours! Thank you to American Idiot and *gasp* Disassociative-Brand Personal Rankdown Newcomer sergejdordij? 2) This rankdown is getting one last extension. I wanted to alleviate the logjam of games deadlines in the next 6-day period, so I talked with AI to confirm he's OK with me moving up to August 9th (and him moving up to a soon-to-be-determined day between the 10th and the 17th). So, finally I can say for sure that the due date is 9 days away. Considering how long this submission period has been for a 36-song list, I'm probably not going to be as open to letting in late lists, though don't let that discourage you from talking to me if you feel like you'll need to work something out.

Alrighty, submissions are closed. Here's your roll call for this rankdown. 1 @humanshazam 2 Geometrical3 Doc Indie Party Rock4 peacebone5 Beno6 sergejdordij7 American Idiot8 Lordef†ones9 commerce19610 Red11 singingrulebritannia12 rowellfarm49013 Daryl the Beryl14 newpowerA modest group of 13 not including me. I've definitely had lower in the past, so I'm satisfied for now, but I'm hoping future RR installments can draw even bigger crowds. I'll try to pump out reveals #36-23 today. but the posts will take some time to construct. In the meantime, if you have any intuitions as to what songs might make top 10, have high SDs, and so on, or would like to tell us where your favorite discoveries landed on your list or have other song-specific thoughts, feel free to offer your views!

I knew going in this song wouldn't do well. At least it had a couple fans. The Cramps were a big inspiration for the alternative rock of the future by turning up the freak-scuzz factor of garage rock by 1000%. Such a delightfully weird and charismatic song. 36

#35 has the lowest highest rank of the game, and it's also the 3rd lowest SD. Out of 5 bottom 6s, one is a PR and another is a 36. This could only ever get as high as 30.

Even though I'm the highest rank on this song (and will partially be for the next reveal too >:(), I don't have many objections to Jerry Lee Lewis landing this low because 1. tough competition, and 2. It's Jerry Lee Lewis. Not exactly the most moral man in the history of showbiz lol 35

#34 is the first song that was outside of the bottom 10 at some point. It has 6 bottom 6s, and this song will yet again give out a single on-the-dot rank. Someone might be shocked this is so low.
