Picture it:
You're at a mall with some of your straight friends, you're in a car with your family going to grandmas for the weekend, you're in a straight club, etc, etc, etc, and a song comes on that you, as the only gay person in the group, can lay claim to. You hear this song in a situation outside of your gay element and you feel a certain level of pride because of it. No matter if you've heard it a thousand times and you're sick of it, or you've played it ten thousand times and still can't get enough, these are songs that give you that little bit of pride of knowing that you're you and that you includes you being gay.
I'm putting together a list of songs that make a gay heart smile. Many of these are classic gay anthems but some of them are songs the gay community has adopted because they speak about self-confidence, self-ownership, taking back control, or they're just really f**king campy and we love camp!
I've so far gathered nearly 90 songs but I want to try to narrow it down to 50. I've decided to limit it to dance songs, which helps a little bit (sorry True Colors, Beautiful) and I'm not including songs by famously gay artists just because they're famous gay (sorry k.d. lang). I also wanted to avoid having multiple songs by artists but I've realized that may be tricky to do. These are songs that would, in theory, make the perfect night out for any gay at a gay club.
Once I decide how to narrow down the list, or to simply post all 80+ songs, I'll open the polls. Bookmark this thread now! You won't want to miss this Musical Rainbow Experience.

f**k yes! iโm not ready for this
Also, if there are way too many songs for one RD, Iโd just split it into two lists that we do separately.

Sounds good! And I can see youโre including oldies too -as you should! But are you sure itโs only โgayโ anthems and not LGBT+ anthems?

I've finally narrowed down this list! IT was tough to do but I made it 50 songs. BEFORE I open the gates for lists, I'm going to leave a day or so for any possible required changes. Obviously, this list was chosen based a lot on my experiences and from what I tried to dig up so it's quite likely/guaranteed I missed some pure essentials to this list. I'd stand behind any song on this list but some more than others so if there are any gayssentials missing that deserve due in this rankdown, regardless of whether you love them or not, please mention them for consideration. Otherwise, I shall open the polls on Friday! ABBA - Dancing Queen Alaska - A Quien Le Importa Aretha Franklin - Respect Ariana Grande - Into You Bananarama - Venus Beyonce - Single Ladies Britney Spears - Toxic Britney Spears - Work Bitch Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy C&C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) Carl Bean - I Was Born This Way Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling Cece Peniston - Finally Cher - Believe Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya & Pink - Lady Marmalade Culture Club - Karma Chameleon Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Deborah Cox - Nobody's Supposed To Be Here [Remix] Dannii Minogue - I Begin To Wonder David Bowie - Boys Keep Swinging Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out Divine - Shoot Your Shot Dolly Parton - 9 To 5 Donna Summer - Hot Stuff Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't Go Breaking My Heart Erasure - A Little Respect Erasure - Chains Of Love Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax George Michael - Freedom! 90 Geri Halliwell - Look At Me Gloria Gayner - I Will Survive Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper Janelle Monae - Make Me Feel Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head Kylie Minogue - Your Disco Needs You Lady Gaga - Born This Way Lily Allen - F**k You Lizzo - Juice Madonna - Express Yourself Madonna - Hung Up Madonna - Vogue Melanie C - I Turn To You Mariah Carey - Fantasy Pet Shop Boys - New York City Boy Prince - Kiss Queen - I Want to Break Free Robin S. - Show Me Love Robyn - Dancing On My Own Rupaul - Sissy That Walk Rupaul - Supermodel (You Better Work) Scissor Sisters - Let's Have A Kiki Shania Twain - Man! Holy crap this list is great! Iโm going to do this.
Spoiler - Iโm more likely to have 70s and 80s songs higher than the 2010s songs.

What a great idea.
A list without the Empress of Disco would seem incomplete. Any of her big hits would fit in nicely (MacArthur Park, Last Dance, This Time I Know It's For Real), however, this duet would cover all your bases, as it includes 2 LGBTQ icons.
It would be a travesty to exclude Ms. Cox, who built a career around this community.
Of course, being gay in itself shouldn't qualify for inclusion in the list. But what a shame that Erasure is not represented in your RD....

All worthy of inclusion. Yes to Deborah too! There were a few other songs that came to mind on my walk to work this morning that I know I missed. Iโll take a closer look again this evening at the new mentions. The Erasure song was definitely on my initial list and almost made the final cut but it didnโt scream at me the way most of the others did so I opted not to include it. Mistake?

Based on gay enthusiasm, I think "All I Want For Christmas Is You," "Since U Been Gone," and RuPaul's "Sissy That Walk" could be added, in addition to the other mentions.

I interpreted the lyrics to 'A Little Respect' and 'Chains Of Love' to reflect on inclusion and the struggle for equality. But maybe that's stretching it? Attachment Deleted

This is a great list! And I totally second mamooshkaโs suggestions. I donโt think thereโs much to add. Iโd just add the ultimate gay anthem in Spanish: Alaskaโs A Quien Le Importa :)

Based on gay enthusiasm, I think "All I Want For Christmas Is You," "Since U Been Gone," and RuPaul's "Sissy That Walk" could be added, in addition to the other mentions. Kelly and Sissy were both in my list. I was uncertain about whether Since U Been Gone was โstrongโly enough associated as a gay-adopted anthem, even though I drunkenly crazy dance to it whenever it plays at the club. The Rupaul song I didnโt included mainly because I already had one of hers there and I tried hard not to duplicate artists too much - although I know I did several times. I legit forgot about AIWFXIY ๐ค The Erasure song was definitely on my initial list and almost made the final cut but it didnโt scream at me the way most of the others did so I opted not to include it. Mistake? I interpreted the lyrics to 'A Little Respect' and 'Chains Of Love' to reflect on inclusion and the struggle for equality. But maybe that's stretching it? View AttachmentDefinitely. A Little Respect showed up a lot when I was looking up โgay anthemsโ but I also wanted the overall list to take on less of a gay-theme in the lyrics and more about songs gays adopted as anthems regardless of what their lyrics were about (though often those songs were still anthemic in themes about strength and independence, such as Itโs Not Right But Itโs Okay). Iโm sure few would be disappointed if I upped the list to 60 too Iโm sure. (Or even 69 :kii:)

A fairly solid list, but I think this also deserves consideration.
From Rocky Horror Picture Show (And yes, I saw Sweet Transvestite on there ;) ):

no Erasure, Divine, โTrue Colorsโ, or DONNA SUMMER?!?
sigh, I guess we needed space for multiple Whitney Houston songs <eye roll>
but, there are some great songs included so Iโll participate
what makes one gay personโs โheart smileโ doesnโt make every gay personโs โheart smileโ, so maybe an LGBT artist rankdown could be put together...that would be MUCH less subjective
I mean Indigo Girls? REM? Melissa Etheridge? Troye Sivan? Adam Lambert? Tegan & Sara? The Who, Tom Robinson, Kitchens Of Distinction, Bloc Party, Morrissey, Placebo...the list is long & we should celebrate our own

Even if you don't love the song but it comes on, you may feel a sense of pride (as a proud gay person) that these song is connected to the culture you identify with. Or maybe not. I like your idea of a rankdown of LGBT artists and that definitely crossed my mind too and I think is worth exploring. tbh, I felt this list would be easier to start with but as I dug into it, I began to realize I might be over my head because there are so many options. I like many of the artists you suggested but I also wanted to keep this list to dancefloor-friendly songs, since that's where many gay people begin to feel most comfortable. Hence no True Colors (though that was honestly one of the first songs I thought of anyway). That's also why the Indigo Girls, Melissa and others aren't on there. But I'd LOVE a rankdown with some Tegan and Sara, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, Indigo Girls, and many others.
