This is so beautiful.
Billboard definitely should hire you as an editor, the aesthetic appeal is A+

Well the funny thing is I've collected every original Hot 100 chart that has ever been professionally printed by Billboard magazine since '58 (and have them all digitally as well) so I know ALL of the iterations over the decades. That's why I'm not just talking crazy when I say you have nailed this. Seriously - make money!

who has the most entries before getting a #1? Not sure, but the Glee Cast is the act with the most entries without a #1.

^Elton's biggest Hot 100 feat was having a song in the top 40 of the Hot 100 for 30 consecutive years from 1970 to 1999. The only artist I can see that would eventually be able to match or surpass that would be Mariah Carey thanks to All I Want For Christmas is You.

who has the most entries before getting a #1? Joe Crocker. He amassed 28 entries between 1964-1982 before he finally scored a number one with “Up Where We Belong”. If you combine the singles discography of ‘Tina Turner’ with ‘Ike & Tina’ then Tina Turner comes out on top. Combined, she amassed 45 entries on the Hot 100 between 1960-1983 before finally hitting number one with “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

Travis Scott is also there.

^While the Rocketman movie, didn't quite have the impact that Bohemian Rhapsody did, it did make people aware of his music and this is reflected in Diamonds still being within the top 40 of the Billboard 200. Also, the new Lion King movie helped the music from the original one gain prominence.
So, yes, I do agree this year in particular would have helped quite a few of his songs to gain new certifications.

Travis Scott is also there. Neither of them are surpassing Tina Turner/Ike & Tina combined. Travis Scott charted 16 Hot 100 entries prior to “SICKO MODE” in 2018 across singles in which he either lead or were featured on. (He practically doubled the entries on the R&B/Hip Hop charts however). Technically speaking, Ariana Grande may come out on top as a lead act given that Billboard doesn’t combine Tina Turner’s stats. with her work with Ike Turner even though they were a duo so both should receive equal billing on songs. P.S: James Brown charted 35 entries prior to scoring his first ever top ten/top five hit with “I Feel Good” in 1965 which peaked at #2. 💀💀💀

Good stuff, bill.b. On a related note, outdated certs, unfortunately, plague a number of top acts.

I adore Elton John, one of my favorite singers of all time, but I always found his number ones to be mostly nonsensical, particularly the 1975 ones. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is obviously not associated with him but with the Beatles, and "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Island Girl" are so not up there with his classics, to the point where they weren't even included in the film. "Your Song", "Rocket Man" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", now those songs deserved #1 (as well as "I'm Still Standing", but that didn't even make top 10).
I even use the UK Singles Chart to complement the US #1s on my playlists, to salvage some songs that couldn't reach the summit in America despite being huge, but Elton's UK #1s aren't much of an improvement.
Also, when did "Tiny Dancer" become so popular? It's definitely not one of the songs I grew up with. Is it cos of that film with the guy who follows a travelling band or something?

I love Katy. Even the generic stuff like "Small Talk" I still sort of enjoy.
The Teenage Dream era was really fun to watch, as she just kept hitting #1.

Crazy how quickly songs dropped off back in the 80s... he only had 5 songs make it past 20 weeks and none of them made it past 25.

So fitting to save MJ for Halloween. at his biggest Hot 100 hit (on paper) being Say Say Say, though. Re: Katy, if you ever redo her chart to add something be sure to include her 69 consecutive weeks in the top 10. She still holds the record for that and will for a long while, I imagine. nvmd I'm blind lol

'Say Say Say' being MJ's biggest chart hit is really the most random 'biggest hit' of any act honestly.
It's not even in his top 10 (maybe even top 15) most memorable hits. I don't think any other act's biggest hit ranks that low in memorability compared to their other hits.

Well, Take a Bow is Madonna's biggest and she has performed it on tour like once.

@benson I know you've expressed the logistical difficulties in compiling a table for Drake because of his many chart entries, but it's funny that the most successful artist of the Hot 100 this decade is the one without a table yet. Have you thought about how you're going to go about making his own table when you eventually get around to it? People will keep bugging you about it on Twitter, especially when Billboard reveals that he's the Hot 100 Artist of the Decade.

I will not be pressured by twitter!!! ;) I actually am pressured every day in my inbox, but I take it all in stride and just keep doing my thing. But yes, I've thought about Drake's, and yes, it's coming. I've been waiting for the decade to officially end first so I can include that stuff. -- I'm also curious to see what happens with the all-time Hot 100 artist rankings this year, if they update it. It's def due for an update. The all-time Hot 100 artists were updated in 2018. Isn’t the next update going to be sometime in 2023 or so?

@benson I know. I actually told you early in this thread to take your time with Drake because of how much music he releases yearly. Wayne and Drake are totally killing the cute factor with their obscene amount of entries. I'm going to do a few of the pre-digital era big shots next, but those two beasts are already on my radar, and I'm already thinking about the logistics. Also, Jay Z - but his will use Nicki's template, so that's smooth sailing. As for Drake, you can take your time. By this time next year, he'll probably have charted 15-20 more entries. There's a bucketload of other artists you can work on in the meantime. I only just remembered that the decade has come to end and he's the #1 Hot 100 artist, but doesn't have a table yet and I know how crazy stans on Twitter get. Take your time. You're doing a great job so far.

Thanks, billb. That's a sensible approach. Also, as "Tell Me I'm Not..." didn't appear on any Billboard chart, and even when it was a B-side, it had been a radio hit months prior to that release. It's not really akin to something like "Into the Groove." Speaking of which- is a Madonna chart on the horizon? :)
