Among the 98 Degrees singles, Una Noche is the song I didn't expect to be a big hit here!
Anyway, I love the 2000 chart because it's my teen chart geek era and I know around 90% of the songs there lol

Retro Hot 100: October 14, 2000They were talking about Napster and the possible inclusion of digital downloads on the Hot 100 during this time - specifically in this week’s Chart Beat. Wow, and it took them ~4.5 years after that to finally implement it? Crazy. I mean I guess it's not shocking after how long it took them to add in YouTube. At least it didn't take them long for regular on-demand streaming in the grand scheme. Yes, streaming has been around almost as long as digital sales, but it really wasn't until 2009-2012 when it started picking up steam in the mainstream thanks to technological advances making it more accessible. And it was added to the Hot 100 in 2012, right? Fairly quick decisiveness there. But the digital sales? To go from, "hey this is a thing that's happening" in 2000 to "Apple has opened a store specifically for this now" in 2003 to "okay, it's finally implemented" in 2005 is kind of hilariously slow. For reference, it took them 2 years after the digital sales giant appeares to implement it. However, streaming was implemented less than a year after Spotify launched in the US. YouTube still beats both, though. Not implemented until 2013 even though it had become a huge music consumption site about 5 year prior. To be fair, though, I guess YouTube was initially met with opposition from the music industry. (But what isn't, lol.)

I had no idea bag lady was an actual top ten Yes. It leapt 34-6 on the Hot 100 that week after scanning 48K units, debuting at #2 on the sales chart. It was also #20 on the Hot 100 airplay that week with 41M AI, almost entirely from R&B radio alone where it was #1.

(But what isn't, lol.) To be fair to Billboard though, since iTunes was only the first (I believe legal) digital download store, not opened until April 2003, Billboard couldn't have counted anything at least until then, unless they were to count illegal downloads which of course they wouldn't have done. Digital sales were also very small when iTunes first opened and took a while to build up, so waiting two years to include something that might not have been a stable metric doesn't seem too far-fetched.

To be fair, though, I guess YouTube was initially met with opposition from the music industry. (But what isn't, lol.) Digital downloads were relatively nothing from 2000-2002 before Apple. The first week Digital Tracks chart started (July 2003) the #1 digital song sold 1,400. So before that... There was likely no point in trying to track an area where there was relatively almost to none consumption. The money/time put into it tracking would exceed the rewards of making the charts more inclusive with just a handful of songs that are even available for download having a few extra sales added. Even when Digital Tracks chart launched in 2003, they didn't add digital sales to Hot 100 in Feb 2005 because they said before they were developing a tracking system that would be able to combine all different versions of a song for download (clean, explicit, radio, etc). They didn't have a system that could.

Soundscan already had complete tracking for physical stores selling music ever since they started in 1991. So ofcourse even when physical singles sales levels got low, it was easy for them to track it since they already had the systems in place for years. That's not the same as putting money/time into making a completely new system to track a completely new format of consumption.
