Why? They were a perfectly good rock band, why are they going country? I miss rock.

Because they can get some airplay at the country format and its an easy transition with Darius’ country label (which they are on — Capitol Nashville). Their music on the album isn’t far removed from today’s country radio music. I don’t mind at all.

They do have a new song called Miss California and I’ve been hearing on SiriusXM pop and rock formats. A band like this, with the broad background of their lead singer, servicing separate songs to multiple formats is nowhere near surprising nor a head scratcher.

I never liked them at their peak, but a Chris Stapleton song? Will be checking it out.

I was really hoping they'd release "Miss California" to country radio because I am in love with that song. The songs they've released so far from Imperfect Circle definitely fit today's country sound. I'm intrigued to see what will happen here.

"Hold On" was recorded by Trent Harmon in 2018 for his debut record if your interested in hearing what it potentially will sound like. I have a feeling the Hootie version is going to be just a little bit stronger.

Miss California is really good. Sounds like a song that Kenny Chesney would cut, but I'm more trying to figure out if it sounds like a country song or if Darius's voice is just ingrained as a country sound to me. As for what this album is going to cater to, everything I've heard sounds like Country/Hot AC. The lines between the two are pretty blurry right now anyhow.

I find it funny that this is the single and they’ve released multiple songs but it from their album.

I find it funny that this is the single and they’ve released multiple songs but it from their album. That's on purpose. More enticing for a nice radio debut from conglomerate stations if it's an unheard song. I don't see this one doing much in the long run but it should see a decent debut when it hits radio.

Will be interesting to see how they do at Country radio.. kind of a unique case since Hootie was never a country act but Darius has had a very successful run at the format.

Where are people hearing this? I'm not finding it on streaming sites yet... It’s not there. Getting radio exclusive. They haven't officially sent this to radio yet -- that'll be on October 18th (next Friday). Many brand managers (aka: program directors) have heard the song though. Usually label reps when they come in to town with one of their artists for radio tour or concert, will ask the PD to listen to a few songs they have in the works with other label artists and ask input on them. Happens a lot and that's how many people in radio have heard the song already. I think some people here have heard the Trent Harmon version and that can help paint a picture how the Hootie & the Blowfish version will turn out.

Yeah, I realized out context (especially if ignoring the post I quoted), my post makes it sound like I've heard the Hootie version. I was referring to Trent's version.

Hootie played "Hold On" live at the iheartradio festival. It aired on tv a week ago. They've played it live during a few recent shows as well.
My question would be why did UMG wait until 2 weeks before an album release to send a single to radio?

My question would be why did UMG wait until 2 weeks before an album release to send a single to radio? It's smarter to release a single closer to a the album release date in this situation, with a band like Hootie & the Blowfish. UMG Nashville isn't expecting this song to be a big hit at radio but they are expecting it to be a buzz release and see some decent airplay when it debuts. It should help sales being so close to the album drop. If they were ready to commit 30-40 weeks in promotion, then this would've hit radio a long time ago. In essence, this one is sort of a novelty release. It'll see airplay but lasting into 2020 and getting top 10-20 at radio? I don't see it -- especially since Darius is teasing more solo country releases, starting in 2020.

A slight change in plans -- UMG Nashville running ads in Country Aircheck this week that say this will drop at radio on Thursday, at 5 p.m. EST.
This one might debut pretty high at country radio.

It's a big deal and they're on UMG, so it makes all the sense in the world why radio conglomerates (mostly iHeartMedia) feel this is a worthy world debut. I don't know how high it will climb after its debut, however. Btw, the ad running in Aircheck is only in the daily email. This ad was not in the Monday country PDF update. For most stations (like, non-iHeart), this will not be put into the computer system until Friday morning. This debut is the exact one "Kinfolks" by Sam Hunt had last week.

Sounds like a Top 20 Adult Contemporary hit.
I was hoping the production would be a little more Country.

I like it! And i would MUCH rather hear this on country radio than that new crap Dan + Shay or Sam Hunt are trying to pass off as country.

It’s the perfect blend of Hootie and country to my ears.

This is good but so was the Trent Harmon version. I know this is unrelated but I’m surprised Trent didn’t do better with his first 2 singles than top 20. Did they ever send a third single from Trent to radio? If they did I don’t ever remember anything about it?

This was in fact debuted hourly by iHeartMedia stations yesterday after 5 pm, EST. Nearly 400 spins in today's Mediabase update but didn't crack the top 50 of the rolling chart.
