"How Do You Like Me Now?!" was the song that took over at #1 after "Beer For My Horses" got tanked from the top. This song stayed at #1 for several lists, but ultimately got tanked by just enough people to fall to the bottom of the top 5. This song was pretty much never not a top 5 contender though! This song is the definition of quintessential Toby though. The attitude that he exudes in this song is legendary. Definitely a well-deserved top 5 contender! It was such a comeback for him too! Not that he was finished or anything, but his career was certainly starting to show signs of winding down. The release (and massive success) of "How Do You Like Me Now" (along with the move to DreamWorks) breathed life back into his career, and really set him up to be one of the biggest country stars of the first half of the 2000s.

That's my house, and that's my car. That's my dog in my backyard. There's the window to the room Where she lays her pretty head. I planted that tree out by the fence Not long after we moved in. That's my kids and that's my wife, But who's that man runnin' my life?

Such a solid song! This was the first one of his I heard, and one of the biggest hits at country when I started getting into the genre.

“How Do You Like Me Now?!” Is another one of Toby’s songs that I found myself obsessed with and couldn’t get enough of when it got released. As someguy mentioned above it really reenergized his career and without that song I think the next decade for him would’ve looked vastly different. Truth be told, though, it wasn’t until recently that I actually started to like the song again because there was a period of time when I really had about enough of it considering how much it has gotten played over the years. This song didn’t start out in my Top 10 but it would have felt incomplete without it. In the end this probably got further than I was expecting it to and it certainly is deserving of being in the Top 5!

Still happy my #1 got top 10 honestly. “Dream Walkin’” has always been my favorite song of Toby’s, hands down. “Who’s That Man” is another one I struggled to put as low as I did. I wanted it higher but he has too many solid songs.

I should've been a cowboy. I should've learned to rope and ride. Wearin' my six-shooter, ridin' my pony on a cattle drive. Stealin' the young girls' hearts. Just like Gene and Roy. Singin' those campfire songs. Woah, I should've been a cowboy.

"Who's That Man" is GORGEOUS! ugh, that minor key. That delivery. Those LYRICS! Probably my favorite song of his lyrically. It is just fantastic.
THRILLED that "Should've Been A Cowboy" didn't win. I love the chorus and like the whole thing, but it has NEVER been one of my favs from Toby.

SURPRISE!!!!!!! I am shooketh to have to announce to you that the most obvious, predictable, and basic winner to this rankdown is not actually the winner!!!!! "Should've Been A Cowboy" put up a heck of a fight, hanging out in the top 2 for pretty much the entire submission process and seeming to have #1 on lock for most of the last several lists. Ultimately the battle for the finish ended up being so close that the teen rankings from people like .indulgecountry and toomuchboy were enough to push this out of victory lane, while the 30s votes from LBTrocks and ChicaCherry콜라 were enough to push this back to #3.

I don’t care if “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” was the most predictable or basic winner...it’s Toby’s quintessential signature song. I grew up with this song from its initial release and no amount of overplay on the radio could’ve persuaded me to put this any lower than #1.
The top two is fine but “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This” really doesn’t belong.

I'm pretty surprised, tbh. I thought "Should've Been A Cowboy" had it in the bag. Neither of the top 2 (though are good songs) feel like all-around career #1s.

I've never tried to catch you lyin'. I didn't want to know the truth. I'd rather go on lovin' blind girl Than go on lovin' without you.

I got a funny feeling The moment that your lips touched mine. Something shot right through me, My heart skipped a beat in time. There's a different feel about you tonight. It's got me thinking lots of crazy things. I even think I saw a flash of light. It felt like electricity.

Well that’s that. Not the outcome I expected or desired and it was a rather fun ride up until the Top 5. Nonetheless, as always bboat11 you’ve been a wonderful host and I have to say revisiting Toby’s discography was a thrill...thanks!!

Wow, thrilled that "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" wound up winning. I went back and forth between that and Should've Been a Cowboy at #1, ultimately settling on the latter, but both are all-timers for me. You really couldn't have went wrong with any of the final 4 songs though(all of which were in my top 5). YSKMLT is such a unique song, both structurally and lyrically, and Toby's voice is just perfect on it. It's also a deeply personal song for me and my gf. Great way to end the rankdown. Thanks for hosting bboat11!!

"Should've Been A Cowboy" Thanks to boat, glass has shattered and all I've thought this entire rankdown is DUPE ACCOUNT DUPE ACCOUNT DUPE ACCOUNT 😂 I think they only had one rank not 4-5 songs off from each other. So happy for You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This!! I also thought Should've Been A Cowboy had this, which would've been as exciting as when Mississippi Girl won the Fireflies rankdown.

I wanted to make sure to stay up for the finish of this last night so in turn I ended up having to make my final comment a bit short as I wanted to get to bed, but I did want to come back around to the final two songs and add some additional comments. I suppose I was really hoping to see one of Toby's tried-and-true signature songs such as "Should've Been a Cowboy" or even "How Do You Like Me Now?!" make it into the Top 2, but I think overplay ended up being their undoing as I'm sure there's a handful here who would be just fine in never hearing one of those songs on the radio ever again. All that aside, both of the final two songs are great and the fact that I ranked "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" in my Top 20 is a testament to the overall strength of Toby's catalog. I certainly underestimated the support the song would receive as all but one put it in their Top 30 so it certainly feels like a very deserving winner especially given that it was one of the least polarizing songs. I know bboat11 has been a bit under the weather so kudos to you for slugging through and getting us to the finish!

Oh wow, what a wonderfully pleasant surprise to see "Should've Been a Cowboy" didn't actually win this and that a far, far better song did instead! "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" is absolutely phenomenal. So pleased with this winner. If I had a dupe account like LBTrocks, I could've let my mom use it to rank this song as her #1 because it is her favorite Toby song. <3

I never offered my final thoughts on this conclusion! "Who's That Man" is an incredible song. Definitely one of Toby's most classic '90s songs out of a career full of classic '90s songs. This song has been a tad overplayed, but it absolutely deserves all the acclaim it can get. #4 is a perfect position for it. I feel a bit conflicted about "Should've Been A Cowboy" being at #3. On the one hand, I am thrilled it did not win, because I get tired of singles rankdowns that have incredibly predictable finishes. However, I feel like it definitely deserved to be in the top 2 at the minimum... This song is almost universally-loved, and set Toby off on one of the most successful careers country music has ever seen. "Wish I Didn't Know Now" is also great, but did NOT deserve to be higher than "Cowboy"... I would have liked to see these two switch positions. Then the winner "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" is such a pleasant surprise to me!!!! There was never any doubt that it would be MY #1, and I kinda kept it in the back of my mind as a dark horse contender to win this thing... But I never thought that it actually would!! kw9461 did a great job explaining why I love this song so much. Basically I consider this song to be a perfect example of why '00s country was so great. Ultimately the fact that nobody tanked this song worked out in its favor and gave it an advantage over some of his more overplayed classics. Thank you to everybody who participated and followed along! Toby is an artist for whom I have felt we needed to do a rankdown for a looooooong time, but I wasn't sure if Pulse would be willing to make it happen successfully because Toby is not given much appreciation around here. Thank you all for taking the time to participate and comment and make this whole thing great! I feel like we gave Toby the justice and recognition he deserved, and actually did a pretty good job ranking his career objectively without a lot of biases controlling the results
