Just watched him perform this and “Prayed For You” with just a guitar. He sounds great performing it either way. Matt has my vote for the Best New Artist awards next year.

Matt Stell has made the most of his quarantine time by putting together a new project, Better Than That. The new EP is set for release on Oct. 16 and was co-produced by Matt with Ash Bowers.
Better Than That features five new songs, including the EP’s title track, which is available now along with the “Better Than That” lyric video. In addition to the new tracks, the EP includes the single “Everywhere But On,” his multi-week No. 1 Platinum-certified smash “Prayed For You,” as well as the recently-released “If I Was A Bar.”
“I think the silver lining to quarantine and being off of the road is that I’ve been able to focus on writing and becoming more creative,” said Stell. “I’m really proud of these new songs, so it’s exciting to finally get them out to the fans.”
BETTER THAN THAT EP Track List: 1. Everywhere But On (Matt Stell, Paul Sikes, and Lance Miller) 2. If I Was A Bar (Dan Isbell, Zack Kale, and Jonathan Singleton) 3. Prayed For You (Ash Bowers, Matt Stell, and Allison Veltz-Cruz) 4. Better Than That (Joe Fox, Phil Barton, and Matt Stell) 5. I Love You Too (Seth Alley, Matt Stell, Ryan Peterson) 6. Sadie (Nate Cyphert, Sam Roman, Parrish Warrington, and Diederik van Elsas) 7. Chase it Down (Jarrod Ingram, Blake Hubbard, Brian Maher, and Matt Stell) 8. Look at Me Now (Joe Fox, Seth Ennis, and Thomas Finchum)

It would’ve been better to just added the new songs from the new EP with the ones from the first EP and made an album. I understand EP’s are a way of getting new music out there but what was the point in making another one that has half the songs from his first EP. I’m pretty sure an album would’ve done well for him considering he already has a multi week number one and a song in the top 10 climbing. Even the new song “Better Than That” has hit written all over it if they choose to release it as a single. Matt has so much potential to be a big star in country music. Like I said in a previous post he’s got my vote for Best New Artist in 2021.

I don't see Matt Stell as someone staying relevant long term for the genre as "Prayed For You" was a pretty middle of the road hit and even if this song does hit #1 it will probably be long forgotten this time next year as this song has had hardly any buzz whatsoever since it was released. There is just something about Matt Stell that screams indistinguishable male artist that does not see a ton of success like some of the male artists we saw in the mid 2010s (Tyler Farr, Craig Campbell, Eric Paslay, Frankie Ballard, Canaan Smith, Chase Bryant, etc)

So at 8 songs why is this considered an EP, while other artists have releases considered to be full albums with only 8 songs?

I wonder if this song is going to fall short of #1 on Billboard as it seems like Russell Dickerson's "Love You Like I USed To" has on both Mediabase and especially Billboard really pulled a lead over this song.
Personally as someone who mildly enjoys "Love You Like I Used To" and finds "Everywhere But On" to be one of the most forgetful hits of this year I am hoping this song gets restricted down to a Mediabase only #1.

This song has honestly grown on me a lot over its run, but it in no way belongs at #1 imo, especially when its climbing in the top 10 alongside several singles that have moved the needle so much more than this ever has. I hope it gets blocked, too.

Yeah, I like this song a lot, but it's not #1 worthy. I don't like "Love You Like I Used To" but that's the more deserving winner so I wouldn't lose sleep if it blocked this.

Very happy to finally see that big push to #1! I suspect it'll instantly drop out, but I'm glad to at least see him score two consecutive #1s as I love both songs (and his voice).

Fuck, I'm sad this hit #1. Because this song is just so boring and hasn't connected very well at all, the sales were subpar at best, the streaming especially on YouTube was really piss poor. Like who beyond the Matt Stell fanclub is gonna remember this song a year from now? I imagine country radio will probably still stick with "Prayed For You".
I get why country radio relies on callout but my goodness they rely on it WAY too much. Because imo callout should not be the end all be all for songs that do connect well like "My Church", "Down To The Honky-Tonk", "Vice", "On My Way To You", nor should it bolster up non event singles like this, "In Between", "Catch", "Make Me Want To", that will be quickly forgotten of within the general sphere by March.
It's especially disheartening when for the mainstream country, this year has been one of the biggest and best years for commercial impact where there is a projected 15 songs projected for the year end Hot 100 chart ("The Bones", "I Hope", "10,000 Hours", "Chasing You", "Nobody But You", "Die From A Broken Heart", "One Margarita", "One Man Band", "Got What I Got", "I Hope You're Happy Now", "Hard To Forget", "One Of Them Girls", "Homesick", "Bluebird", "Does To Me") and despite that country radio is such participation trophy esque that undeserving songs from Jimmie Allen, Matt Stell, Scotty McCreery, Brett Young also hit #1.
I conclude my rant by saying that Matt Stell still leaves me unimpressed as an artist and I still think he has hardly any longevity as at best his career has Cole Swindell upside and at worst I see him going the way of Tyler Farr.

I don't really like Matt Stell, either, and can see him fading away like Jimmie Allen, but this one grew on me during its run (because I ignored it until it hit Top 10 or so). The hook is really fun! "Prayed For You" remains the worst thing from 2019, but maybe he has a few more hits in him if this song is any indication.
