Thalheim David Sylvian
Points: 124 SD: 8.030
Comments: I Surrender on Red βs through the years RD was an awesome discovery inspired me to listen to Dead Bees on a Cake in full. The album as a whole was a bit underwhelming, but the tracks I love on it I LOVE. Thalheim is very close to I Surrender for me, I love the little chorus that comes in towards the end of this song.

Same reasoning as βWhen You Breakβ but βThalheimβ sounds closer to the art pop and downtempo styles Iβm acquainted with.

I have 15 extras I wanna share here too--stuff that almost made the list proper, but I cut for one reason or another to get to a smaller list. All of My Heart - ABC
ABC always do it right, and the orchestral instrumentation really makes this particular track pop. Cut cause I had too much synthpop/sophisti-pop already.
Lover I Don't Have to Love - Bright Eyes
This was one of the very last songs I had to cut. Is it bad that I had no idea that Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes started out soooo emo? Their first record is pretty good, Lover I Don't Have to Love is a banger.
The Girl Can't Dance - Bunker Hill
This song is RIDICOUSLY punky for rock & roll from 1963. Energy and performance are absolutely off the rails, and I feel like I've never heard this track discussed when it comes to the foundations of modern punk.
Let's Go Out Tonight - The Blue Nile
I've always loved The Downtown Lights (which actually won my first, un-finished personal rankdown from 2018), but it wasn't until Christmas 2021 that I listened to Hats in full, and like, it's a perfect album. Let's Go Out Tonight is...arguably better than The Downtown Lights. Really wanted to represent it here, but...well, I did technically come across it in 2021 and I didn't wanna double dip on Hats.
Black Brad Pitt - Evil Nine ft. Danny Brown
So 2022 was the year I "got" Danny Brown and grew to love Atrocity Exhibition. Wanted to put When It Rain or Really Doe here, but then my husband (who, as I mentioned before only listens to MSI and KMFDM) started talking about Black Brad Pitt and knew all the words but didn't know who Danny Brown was like, a day after I posted this rankdown. Blew my mind. Anyway, this just missed the cutoff, but would have been a fun addition for sure.

All good so far. I love Wovenhand (as I love pretty much anything 16 Horsepower related) but "Ain't No Sunshine" wasn't a highlight from that album imo; I would have ranked "The Good Hand" or "My Russia" higher.

Just One Look Doris Troy
Points: 146 SD: 9.371
Comments: Found myself bumping a lot more classic 60s and 70s soul music than I usually do in 2022. Aretha Franklin's Daydreamin' and Natalie Cole's This Will Be were also on the shortlist for the rankdown, but I have come back to Just One Look the most. I know I ranked this in my bottom 10, but was still rooting for this to do a bit better...has the highest SD by a longshot.

Darling Effect Insides
Points: 146 SD: 8.847
Comments: Spotify's Discover Weekly has been at an all-time low at recommending me new music I haven't heard, but at least it did help me discover this gem. Had never even heard of this act before, but I love the polished ambient pop on the album, and Darling Effect is the biggest highlight for me.

dai hachi byoto The Cabs
Points: 149 SD: 7.141
Comments: *Not to be confused with American pop rock band The Cab. This band's new to me, and I'm always on board for Japanese math rock and emo. Good EP, good song, good performances, not a whole lot to say about it, it's just a good song.

Ray Ray Rain Bettie Serveert
Points: 154 SD: 6.518
Comments: To show my hand a bit, Iβve been kind of planning on doing a βnew & activeβ rankdown series since like December, representing the songs just outside the top 50 of alt. Thereβs something so fun to me about all these random bands that showed up in old Radio & Records charts that didnβt even quite make the top 50 proper, and yet Iβm here 25 years later still listening to them (itβs just a list of like a thousand songs I need to listen through to make a proper list to rank). Anyway, Ray Ray Rain by Dutch band Bettie Serveert is one of the songs I discovered from this, and I really love it. This sounds like the kind of late 90s power pop/alt rock bedroom pop artists today aim to make.

Points: 155 SD: 8.209
Comments: Really gorg 60s folk music here, another good song from my Discover Weekly. Turns out a young Richard Thompson got his start with this band.

Part of the reason I ranked βJust One Lookβ last is because of an issue with the left and right stereo mix on Spotify. Did no one else notice it?

Insecure Me Soft Cell
Points: 160 SD: 6.324
Comments: Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret needs no introduction, but it really is a fire album. Insecure Me is a b-side that is only on the deluxe edition, but I discovered it through rankdown extras and it's grown to become my favorite Soft Cell song. Groove is irresistible, essential workout song for me.

The First Single (You Know Me) The Format
Points: 164 SD: 7.677
Comments: Was really surprised when I learned that Nate Ruess had a...moderately (?) successful band in the early 2000s pre-Fun, but surprised me even more when I heard how GOOD they were. I uh need to listen to one of their full albums still, but The First Single is power pop perfection. Really love this track.

Last Good Day of the Year Cousteau
Points: 164 SD: 3.860
Comments: Mild AAA hit from like 2001 I think. We may even rank this in a retro AAA rankdown, would be cool if we did. This song is just so incredibly smooth, great baroque pop and jazz fusion across the album as a whole, love the trumpet (?) on this track.

These Are the Days Lift to Experience
Points: 173 SD: 7.602
Comments: I saw this album scrolling through the highest rated records of all-time on RYM and THAT album cover with THAT combination of genres really left an impact on me. The Texas-Jerusalem Experience is a very dense record I'm still not sure how I feel about as a whole, but These Are the Days is easily the most single-ready and relistenable track on the album.

Falllllllling and Laughing Orange Juice
Points: 175 SD: 6.786
Comments: Came across this listening through the biggest singles of 1980 on RYM, and it's really cool! I should definitely make time for more Orange Juice in my life, they seem to be a really classic post-punk act. The instrumental on this is so tight and complex and good, love the bass.

Bonuses
Bloodhail - Have a Nice Life I uh had no idea that Have a Nice Life had like one of the biggest internet cult classic records of all time until 2022. I really like Deathconsciousness though, and I love Bloodhail but like. I don't think anyone else here has been as in the dark that this album/song exists as was lol, so I left it off.
Here (In Your Arms) - Hellogoodbye I can't say that I discovered this song in 2022, I had definitely heard it before. But, you know, it's been a good 8-10 years since I last listened to it, so when I heard it on Hot Topic radio (of course) I was like...damn this really sounds like it could have come out in 2020 but as an ironic hyperpop song, and with that lens I kinda "re-discovered". Didn't see it performing well here though lol.
Accident Prone - Jawbreaker I've heard Jawbreaker's name as like, essential to the development of emo, but I had never actually listened to them till I caught this song on Sirius XMU of all places. Such an incredibly good song, but another one that was like, last week of 2021 for me so I took it off.
Parallelograms - Linda PerhacsStarted 2022 really trying to become an "albums person" (which I'd say I've more or less succeeded at), was going to make my way through the 100 highest albums of 1970 on RYM and got a lot of really cool discoveries out of doing that. Was a bit worried about flooding this rankdown with songs from that (which...idk do I even have ANY 1970 songs here now?), but Parallelograms is an awesome psychedelic folk project, the title track is my favorite. Could've had a Linda-off here.
Marble - Mebae DriveAs long as I have been into anime, music, and anime music, it's kinda rare for me to discover a song from an old anime that I have truly never heard before but really like. This is the ED for cult classic moeblob show Hidamari Sketch. Show is okay, has some nice visuals, but I just love this end theme. Not super special pop song or anything, but it's just so warm and catchy and pleasant, perfect ending for the show it's on. (this is the part where I shill for my dead anime rankdown from 3+ years ago/talk about wanting to reboot it).

If you want to enjoy practically anything from the 60s you'll have to get used to the fact that studio engineers' stereo panning methods from the era are often not compatible with modern sound systems, sorry

This was not an issue that I noticed with the songs in your jazz favorites rankdown or recordings of The Beatlesβ songs that Iβve listened to.

Tear in Abyss death's dynamic shroud
Points: 179 SD: 7.593
Comments: DDS is another act I got really into this past year. I think overall I like Darklife more than Faith in Persona, but theyβre both great records, and the way that this song is to create something so epic out of 2 snippets from Kelsea Ballerini and Demi Lovato songs is both really impressive and like...kinda funny?

Desire As Prefab Sprout
Points: 180 SD: 8.654
Comments: Ever since we ranked When Love Breaks Down in the 198*mumble* alt rankdown it's become one of my favorite songs of the entire 80s decade. So I finally listened to Steve McQueen in full this year, it's a good album, and Desire As was my favorite hidden deep cut. So dark and cold for the album, almost sounds like darkwave, and there's something about how the "six things on my mind..." refrain decays over the course of the song rather than build that really works for me.

Points: 184 SD: 6.467
Comments: Iβve been aware of this album for awhile, think I even charted Wool in the Wash back in 2016, but really grew to love it in 2022. Good music to play on the drive to the beach. Great guitars on this track, would love another album from this act. Also, first #1 lost here. Condolences American Idiot

I Wish You Were a Girl 12 Rods
Points: 208 SD: 7.657
Comments: Discovered this band 12 Rods through some of my alt archive listening (What Has Happened was a new & active extra on R&R in 2000). Thought they were just another random pop rock band that stumbled into tiny alt radio success, so was surprised to see how highly regarded they were on RYM. I Wish You Were a Girl blew me away the first time I heard it, such an incredible sounding song with masterful songwriting and lyricism, I love this one. Condolences BlurryKyle

Ghost House Beverly Glenn-Copeland
Points: 214 SD: 8.488
Comments: Wow Iβm glad this had such a strong showing! Honestly, Iβm not sure what possessed me to listen to this album, but Iβm glad I did, itβs an amazing piece of early 70s psychedelic folk and Ghost House is such a dramatic, haunting behemoth of a song. Need to listen to more stuff from this artist, thereβs a 15 year gap between his debut and his next album which seems just as acclaimed, which is interesting to me. Also, love a trans Canadian artist. Condolences rowellfarm490 .

K before I reveal the top 5, I'm gonna drop my last 5 extras here cause I didn't budget effectively and don't want to drop after the rankdown is over lol Elvis is Everywhere - Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper
I've never been a huge Mojo Nixon fan, most of his alt charters do nothing for me. And I don't necessarily think Elvis Is Everywhere is the best sounding song but...it's sooooooo funny to me. Deranged rambling about the ubiquity of Elvis and the anti-Elvis and how he's at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle, actually brilliant. The "Elvis needs boats" breakdown is the funniest shit omg.
On the Way Down - Ryan Cabrera
You know, I had some artsy folk and shoegaze and stuff on this rankdown, I don't really think it would have hurt to include this random, kinda lame one-hit wonder pop rock song from the early 2000s I only discovered because I heard it on Walmart radio. But I feel like its fate would have been kind of sealed right out the gate, right.
Promised Land - Skeletal Family
Really cool early 80s post-punk/gothic rock I discovered on some Spotify playlist. Awesome guitars and percussion here too.
Opus No. 1 - Tim Carleton & Derrick Deel
This is like THE on hold music. Unironically love this song, and I thought it was kind of a funny joke for it to be my only published review on RYM for awhile. This song has become essential to me as a person.
Special One - Ultra Vivid Scene
And closing out my bonuses with something decidedly unflashy. Just a kinda cool early 90s jangle pop song that charted pretty well on alt, thought it was a bit too boring to include in the rankdown, but it is a very nice little song.

The End of Summer Coaltar of the Deepers
Points: 214 SD: 6.275
Comments: Coaltar of the Deepers is a band Iβve been aware of for awhile (they did the ED for Penguindrum, Dear Future, which is an excellent song)), but it wasnβt until December when I listened to No Thank You in full. Itβs a damn good album too! Really interesting mix of alt metal and post-hardcore and shoegaze, I recommend giving it a listen, a lot of the tracks are much zanier than this one. And yet, this straight shot shoegaze song is the one that left the biggest impression on me. Itβs just...so pretty. Really conjures imagery of βthe end of summerβ.

Wasted Days Cloud Nothings
Points: 225 SD: 7.692
Comments: Iβve always liked this band, but I had never heard this song till I caught the tail end of it on Sirius XMU (the station that also plays Jawbreaker and Cursive...I got a year's Sirius subscription for my birthday, XMU was the best station). Think this is my favorite song from the band now, itβs just so huge and I love the heaviness of the extended outro.
