also i figure i should mention this, but for SD's i'm only mentioning if it's in the top 3 for highest or lowest bc otherwise it would be a bit redundant after a while plus having it only be SD's in the 20th percentile is a little more special
#6. Soulwax - Any Minute Now 119 points SD: 4.53 (3rd highest)
1. @trilogy 1. aerodynamite 1. American Idiot 2. zippy 4. decadevia 4. annoymous1 5. recordyear 6. PREDS PRIDE 7. singingrulebritannia 8. BlurryKyle 8. reputainbow 9. Mayman 11. Leo ✔ 12. wheatsquares33 12. BB🌕 13. willapted33 15. samo🦕
my thoughts: i honestly adore this sorta new rave-y stuff. it's danceable, fun, catchy, and makes me feel like an absolute badass. when i was making this rankdown, i was split between this and the space and the woods, but stuck with this one because this one is less known and not really a staple of the genre. (putting both probably wouldn't be an option because it'd probably get a bit tiring). that said, this song should totally be up there as a staple for both new-rave stuff and the post-punk revival scene imo. it's that good.

#10 - "Rollercoaster" is fine but didn't stand out to me in this rd, but I like that you chose this song despite its obscurity
#9 - "Anorak Christmas" is pleasant to my ears and I agree with how you described the song
#8 - perhaps why I said #10 didn't stand out is because of this track. "The Hymn for the Cigarettes" has some memorable lyrics and is plenty enjoyable.
#7 - agreed with what you said about "Baby When I Close My Eyes", it's strong enough for me that I'd rate it 4 stars on RYM
#6 - "Any Minute Now" is a real banger and was one of two tracks I considered to rank as my #1. I should spend more time with Soulwax's music. Their most played song on Spotify "Krack" is on one of my personal playlists.

the way this band spells their name is very very stupid. #4. OMD - Joan of Arc 105 points SD: 4.30
1. Mayman 2. BlurryKyle 2. recordyear 2. wheatsquares33 2. BB🌕 3. @trilogy 3. reputainbow 5. zippy 5. samo🦕 6. singingrulebritannia 6. willapted33 9. annoymous1 10. American Idiot 11. aerodynamite 11. PREDS PRIDE 13. Leo ✔ 14. decadevia
my thoughts: between the two 'joan of arc' songs on this album, this one is probably my favorite even though both are damn near perfect. the way this one builds up, the subtle yet ominous backing vocals (which i'm still not 100% convinced aren't just synths), all of it is just incredible to me. it is in my bottom 2 though but that's due to me not listening to it nearly as much as any of the other songs here.
{songs remaining}animal collective - bluish jens lekman - sipping on the sweet nectar the cardigans - sick and tired

this brings us to our top 2, which honestly could've changed very easily even with another list or any sort of edit. that's how close it was. in fact, basically the entire rankdown was a battle between the top 3 for the top spot. that said i'm compositing the entire top 2 into a single post, which i will post in a couple of hours.
our top 2: Jens Lekman - Sipping on the Sweet Nectar The Cardigans - Sick and Tired

Swedish artist vs Swedish artist, and ABBA isn’t one of them!

there is a three point gap between the entire top 3. this was so frustrating yesterday. i would construct the entire post rewriting the top 3, realize i messed up a rank, and then go back and try to fix it just for every single song to change its rank. special shoutout goes to the history tool in photoshop
2. The Cardigans - Sick and Tired 93 points SD: 2.79 (2nd lowest)
1. recordyear 2. aerodynamite 3. BlurryKyle 3. Leo ✔ 4. singingrulebritannia 4. Mayman 4. wheatsquares33 4. willapted33 5. BB🌕 6. decadevia 6. annoymous1 7. reputainbow 8. zippy 8. @trilogy 8. PREDS PRIDE 8. American Idiot
12. samo🦕
my thoughts: this song has been with me now for five (!!!) years and it is absolutely lovely. i'm a huge sucker for songs with a sweetly melancholic vibe to them and this has to be a textbook example of that for me. plus, "emmerdale" (the album this is on) along with "antisocialites" kinda acted as "gateway" albums into getting me to not be a basic pop poster anymore so shoutout to those.
which means our #1 is...
#1. Animal Collective - Bluish 91 points SD: 4.44 (3rd highest)
2. @trilogy
my thoughts: i really love 'merriweather post pavillion', but recently, this song in particular has been clicking with me a lot. i don't know how to describe it outside of calling it the 'perfect' animal collective song. it's ethereal, psychedelic, the synths are sublime, and the vocal melody is peak ac. it's perfect for relaxing. so much so, i listen to it a lot if i'm drawing

closeness: 1. zippy: 1.80 2. singingrulebritannia: 1.82 3. recordyear: 2.36 5. @trilogy: 2.60 (tie) 5. BB🌕: 2.60 (tie) 6. BlurryKyle: 2.75 7. wheatsquares33: 2.88 8. willapted33: 3.17 9. Mayman: 3.40 10. aerodynamite: 3.67 11. reputainbow: 4.20 12. decadevia: 4.36 13. samo🦕: 4.46 14. Leo ✔: 4.58 15. annoymous1: 4.74 16. American Idiot: 5.01 17. PREDS PRIDE: 5.28
this is also my first time doing closeness for a rankdown so if i did it wrong or anything, lmk!!
anyways, in spite of the top 3 being a bit of a trainwreck, i say this rankdown went pretty well. especially with it being my first one i've done in over three years. i'm definitely less scared of hosting rankdowns and i think i taught myself some clever tricks with google sheets that resulted in reveals being more efficient and easier to do (and allowed for fun stuff like movements and closeness).
i'll probably do another rankdown of this sort eventually. maybe a sequel or something?? or something new entirely? a city pop rd would be fun!

watching the top 2 seem to be my lowest ranks in the top 5 only for my #3 to actually end up winning…as painful as all of this must have been for you it was all worth it

#5 - I cannot say that I liked ABBA's music when I was younger so I never held them in high regard like The Beatles, but I have been more open-minded about them recently. "When I Kissed The Teacher" has kind of a magical old-fashioned vibe to it, though I admit I would have had it ranked lower if I didn't listen to this playlist multiple times.
#4 - I could also say that "Joan of Arc" has a sort of magical vibe and is a bit more appealing to my tastes.
#3 - If I don't count the Soulwax song as a discovery, "Sipping on the Sweet Nectar" is the best discovery in this rd, a very cheerful track that samples 4 older songs. #2 - Oddly enough, "Sick and Tired" is the first song that plays in my head when I think of your rankdown selection. While I can consider it a good song, it's not a music style that I am seeking out.
#1 - I remember adding Merriweather Post Pavilion to my iPod playlist back in 2009. I didn't revisit the album until recently and I would just pick a couple of tracks to listen to and see if I would add them to a personal playlist... so I've overlooked this gem. I wouldn't consider it my top favorite AC track, but listening to it with that album cover is a psychedelic trip that this band excels at.

Glad the rankdown top 4 is my top 4 despite in different orders. Jens Lekman song is a good candidate for Madness games. It should end up in the finals. Sick & Tired may be the one that I will revisit the most. Great vocals and melody. Thanks for hosting decadevia.

Thanks for hosting decadevia . uhhhhh is now a good time to tell you it came out in 2007? jens just re-recorded the album it was on and re-released it so he can put it back on streaming since he wasn't able to afford sample clearances.
