I believe Best New Artist criteria is not based on the year your first album comes out but the first year in which a band makes an "impact" (how that is defined is subjective) on mainstream music. In that sense, then Maroon 5 would have been eligible. But Norah Jones was nominated for and won "Best New Artist" in 2003 when te majority of people still didn't know about her. It was her large amount of grammy nominations that made the public notice her at first. More people knew about her than you think. I remember hearing hype about her before the grammys happened. I think its a GREAT exaggeration when people say that Norah Jones was a no name sold nothing nobody artist before the grammys magically gave her all her sales and popularity. Yes, of course, the grammys made her a superstar, but she was selling decently and making a name for herself before that. Maroon5 was literally a no name nobody artist before they broke out years after their cd release.

Does anyone any info about the awards that are given out prior to the telecast? Is there an audience for this ceremony? Do artists actually accept the awards? Is there a webcast of this ceremony? If not, why? And it's not like I want to see a lot of more acceptance speeches. But I do think that those who have won Grammy's prior to the telecast should get some on-air recognition. Perhaps scroll their names, like they do for the "dead" people. It's just a shame that someone can win multiple Grammy's earlier in the day and get shut out during the telecast and the perception to the viewers is that they're a big loser. The other night they read the name of Producer of the Year and had him stand up, which was nice. They can't do that for everyone obviously. Just seems like they could cut one performance to fit in more recognition of that year's Grammy winners. There is a ceremony with presenters, and many winners do accept. The bigger stars aren't usually there because they are walking the red carpet or whatever, but a lot of the genre winners are there to accept. VH1 used to show the ceremony, but they stopped a few years ago. I remember Brandy rushing the stage when she and Monica won for "TBIM." Thanks for the info. They really should at least do a webcast of it. I'm sure that's coming down the road with all the changes in technology.

MADONNA RULED THE NIGHT AND STOLE THE SHOW!!!!.....ONLY ONE WOMAN CAN COMAND THIS POWER!!!!..2007 GRAMMYS IS ALL HERS!!! That will actually be very interesting. Will Madonna's label submit her album into the dance categories which would be pretty much a lock, or would they take a risk and put it in pop? I'm sure there will be a single sent to dance and another to pop to maximize the nominations, but i don't know which would go where.
