Multiple Music Award Nods for Many
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- For more than a dozen artists, nominations for the American Music Awards came in twos and threes.
Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Eyed Peas and Nickelback each captured three nominations, while Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, T.I., Rascal Flatts, Pussycat Dolls and former American Idols Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood earned a pair of nods each.
Nominees in pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip-hop, Latin, alternative, contemporary inspirational and adult contemporary categories were announced at a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
This year, the favorite female rap/hip-hop artist category was eliminated because fewer than five artists met the minimum eligibility requirements.

How did Mariah, Kanye and Kelly get nominated again? It says that nominees were based on album sales. So those albums with the majority of sales in 2005 were still able to get nominated? LMAO I thought Rihanna had sold more than Nelly Furtado though.

The pop/rock nominations are absolutely obsurd. What are these people thinking?

Isnt it a combination of the best selling and best performing singles? But where is Shakira if that is true?

I'm assuming that their period is a October - October timeframe, combining the success of albums and singles in that period.
If given that, I can see why both Mariah and Kelly are in there. Both artists sold extremely well through the fall and Christmas as well as had multiple singles on the charts into the new year.
I'm not sure how they determine Pop/Rock vs other categories but I assume it has to do with the types of charts the songs perform well on. As Mariah crossed over and performed very well in a lot of genres, I'm not surprised she's in both sections.

Nelly Furtado for Pop? Her album just came out. Shouldn't Madonna be in there?

For pop where's Daniel Powter, "bad day" is the biggest hit of the last 52weeks 'since the last nominations". Country?! Where are the Dixie Chicks as a band only Rascall Flatts had better success and on album only Rascall Flatts too?! And didn't Carry Underwood got the best selling album? What are the rules to be nominated? We need an explanation on this!!!

yeah, why isn't Carrie nominated for country album when she has the best selling album of the chart year for ALL genres? did that Johnny Cash compilation even sell that well...it's not like the AMAs have especially cared about awarding dead people in the past (unlike Grammys).

Why did Aly & AJ get nominated for inspirational? Did they do religious music before they hit the pop scene?

Why did Aly & AJ get nominated for inspirational? Did they do religious music before they hit the pop scene? a few of their songs have Christian themed lyrics, but they're pretty vague for the most part. that's another wierd one.

I think the timeframe would have to be August to August...
As for Nelly F and not Madonna - I think Nelly has more points because of the success of her first single. It sold a bunch and was #1 for a month and a half. Plus her album is gold. When you add it up she probably just edges out Madonna...
As for Mariah - Shake It Off didn't start charting until August (I believe) and then DFAU plus SS and FLAB, plus the re-release album sales. As for Kanye - Gold Digger didn't start impacting until around August as well. So, I think it makes sense.

Well if the nominations are based on sales, she still sold more than Nelly Furtado did.

Yep-she did sell more than Nelly in the qualifying time period as well as some of the other artists nominated. I find it funny how Madonna is declared a total flop when she has sold 1.5 million plus with like... no airplay as opposed to some of these artists that have had top 10 and #1 hits yet are struggling to get or go past the million mark. Never underestimate the power of hype.

AMA nominations are always weird.
Last year, they didn't even nominate John Legen for "New Artist/Breakthough" yet, he won BNA at the grammy awards.
Also, I think Carrie should have been nominated for country album to.

I like watching the show, but I really don't take it too seriously. I mean, last year they gave awards to Will Smith and Gwen Stefani... Enough said. Not to mention that year they gave J.Lo an award over Celine Dion... Yikes.

The Emancipation of Mimi for best Soul/R&B album? Isn't it a little old to be nominated?

The American Music Awards don't have any credibility anymore.
They rarely give nominations and awards to those that deserve them - based on their supposed "sales and airplay" criteria.
In 2003, they gave the Country Duo/Group award to Alabama - who got the award over Brooks & Dunn and the Dixie Chicks.
That same year, 2003, Faith Hill got the Female Country Artist award over Shania and Martina - who both had a better year than Faith.
Also in 2003, Kid Rock got an award over Clay Aiken and Justin Timberlake.
That is just 1 year of the AMAs.
There are many, many more examples of the AMAs not making any sense.

wasn't that the year of 'Picture' and his album suddenly starting to sell? I love Clay, but his inclusion in the nominations that year was somewhat suspect since his album had barely been released before they were announced.
anyway, I think the "sales and airplay" criteria is for the nominations. the winners are picked by "a survey of random music buyers", whatever the hell that means.

Wow, I'm surprised there's no James Blunt in that list. Isn't he like, the best-selling male artist this year?

Stupid award with some awesome shows... no one cares who won the AMAs.... we wanna watch the concerts!! Don't sweat yourself over these awards. The AMAs lost complete credibility way back in 1990. Soul II Soul was nominated in 5 categories, 2 of which they absolutely deserved to win. They got none.
