www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,227672,00.html Grammy Deadline Nears: Gnarls In Charge? Members of the Recording Academy must have their preliminary ballots all voted and back in by Thursday for this year's Grammy Awards. And now things get interesting. The Best Album nominations are certain to include Gnarls Barkley's hit CD, "St. Elsewhere," and that album's single, "Crazy," is destined for the Best Record category. But beyond that, what? The four other Best Album nominees could be Paul Simon's "Surprise," which actually was the best recording this year—although that doesn't really guarantee it anything in this age of diminished standards. The three remaining slots for Best Album could go to a variety of different offerings, including obvious but not definite choices like Bob Dylan's "Modern Times," the Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way Home" and James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam." Expect Blunt to clean up at this year's awards, with nominations for Best New Artist, Best Song and Record for "You're Beautiful," in addition to Best Album. There's also Bruce Springsteen's "Seeger Sessions," which will be taken very seriously by voters. But we can't count out the commercial stuff, no matter how much we dislike it. That would include Justin Timberlake's "Future Sex/Love Sounds," Beyonce's "'B' Day," , Christina Aguilera's "Back to Basics" and Mary J. Blige's "The Breakthrough." And that's not including Tony Bennett's irksome "Duets" album. One or more of them is sure to break through, causing protests and shrieks. But Best Record, now that's an easier story. Besides Blunt, we have KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree," Wyclef Jean and Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," the Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice" and Daniel Powter's ubiquitous "Bad Day." If one of those doesn't make it, expect Timberlake's "Sexyback" to be included. For Best Song, things are a bit harder. Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," for example, is built on a sample from an Italian spaghetti western. It may not count, as it is more pastiche than original composition. But Blunt is in, and so is Powter. Tunstall also has a shot, as do the Chicks. One Best Song nominee that would produce screams, especially from this column: John Mayer's "Waiting for the World to Change," which is so completely built on two songs by the late Curtis Mayfield that I have to change the channel when it comes on my satellite radio. Finally, for once the Grammys will have an over abundance of Best New Artists from which it will hard to make choices. Carrie Underwood, who matriculated from "American Idol," seems like an obvious choice. Both Blunt and Tunstall also appear to be slamdunks. But then what? Teen dancing sensation Chris Brown cannot be excluded either. But at the same time, excellent cases can be made for Rihanna, The Fray, Arctic Monkeys, Corinne Bailey Smith and even the Pussycat Dolls.

?? This writer doesn't seem to understand the Best Song category, which is an award for the songwriter, not the song or its production.

Dont we already have a topic for Grammy predictions?
And what did he say that was so off about SOTY? I dont really see any talk about production, and he named plausible nominees anyway.

I hate how 1 hit wonders get all this Grammy consideration (Gnarls Barkley, James Blunt). It's nauseating. I doubt either act ever has another "big" hit again.
And if I see Daniel Powter in any category, that'll be a joke.

I'm going to die laughing if someone like Corrine Baily beats out Carrie for Best New Artist.lol Why? I'm all for Carrie being nominated since she has had a HUGE year and it is well-deserved, but Corinne is also one of the frontrunners. Plus, she has the singer-songwriter thing that the Grammy voters seem to love. Btw, I knew something was off with that part of the article. Corinne Bailey RAE! Who the heck is Corinne Bailey SMITH?

While we're at it, I might as well add this clarificatory article from Gold Derby: goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2006/10/index.htmlYes, Carrie and Natasha qualify as Grammy new artists A few years ago it suddenly became really tough to predict Grammy nominees for best new artist because candidates were no longer limited to people who made their first professional recordings during the eligibility period. The category now encompassed artists who've been in the biz for years, but just recently emerged into prominence. Since Grammy's eligibility cut-off date of Sept. 30 just passed, it's time to start predicting nominees who'll be announced on Dec. 7. Our Grammy forum moderator David Schnelwar ("Guru"), however, was befuddled over whether certain artists can be considered for best new artist. So we submitted our list of questionables to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and got the answers. (Thanks, Ron Roecker!) Here's what he says about these artists: Natasha Bedingfield — entered and eligible Gnarls Barkley — not entered Pussycat Dolls — entered and eligible Rihanna — entered and eligible Snow Patrol — not entered Carrie Underwood — entered and eligible

their albums have sold well. and the Grammys are supposed to focus on quality, and those songs are quality (Gnarls moreso than James, but still).
Male Pop Vocal probably has a really good slot for it. it was so big this year. if it gets nominated anywhere else i'm calling foul.
Justin will most likely get a ton, including male pop vocal. I know the Pop Vocal nominees have nothing to do with the actual vocal performance, but i'd still consider it a farce if "SexyBack" is nominated there because the vocals on that don't even sound human. unfortunately, it probably will be since I bet "My Love" goes to rap/sung collaboration and no other singles have come out to be eligible.
WTF?! it seems like nobody remembers her first album! Pon De Replay anyone?
this is just wierd. she helped read last year's nominations so they obviously knew she existed before this eligibility year. i'd love it if she got nominated, though.
and why the hell were Gnarls Barkley not entered??

^Yeah, it was so weird about Natasha. Everyone was shocked when she read the nominees last year, but didn't even get nominated for one! I remember last year people were predicting her for best new artist too lol. Ciara got nominated last year and I think her album wasn't exactly in the eligibility period.
I think Best New Artist is sometimes worded as the year the artist gains "prominence" and in this sense, Rihanna and Natasha validated themselves this year

He explicitly mentions "Crazy" as being "built on a sample from an Italian spaghetti western" and "Waiting on the World to Change as "completely built on two songs by the late Curtis Mayfield," things which have absolutely nothing to do with songwriting and whether either will be included in the SOTY category.

??
He's saying those songs are built on samples of other songs, so he is questioning their songwriting merit. He's saying are those songs good because of the samples/chords written by other songwriters, or do they have good songwriting of their own. Sounds pretty relevant to SOTY

My bad, you're right. I realize I did the thing where I confuse the songwriter for lyrics, not song composition. Duh.

yeah, but it still seems strange that people in the music industry continually ignore that Rihanna had a #2 Hot 100 hit before this eligibility year. she kind of exploded out of the gate to some extent. she wasn't a total unknown before "SOS". Natasha makes more sense at least because 'Unwritten' only became big this year. Rihanna probably wouldn't have been deemed worthy of a nomination for her work up to that point, but to act like it never happened is strange.

Meh. I love Paul Simon and have most of his work (including "Surprise"). "Surprise" is probably my least favorite album by Simon ever, although I like some of it. Kudos to him for trying something different, but best recording of the year? Not to me, not by a long shot.

Corinne Bailey Rae definitely deserves a ROTY and BNA nomination if nothing else!! And Nelly Furtado definitely deserves a win for something!!

I really think Carrie deserves Best New Artist, she definitely has shined this past year, I just hope the combination of being pretty fresh off of Idol and people like James Blunt, etc. don't stand in her way.

Madonna i can see winning most of the Dance catergory's...and maybe being nominated for record of the year and best pop vocal for a female....you can already tell how the Grammys feel about Madonna when they have her lead off the show with Hung Up and it was not eligble yet to even being nominated last year...she will be rewarded in some way or fashion this year.

Record of the year should be competitive between,
Rascal Flatts "What Hurts The Most" Corinne Bailey Rae "Put Your Records On" Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" Nelly Furtado "Promiscuous" Justin Timberlake "Sexyback" Carrie Underwood "Jesus, Take The Wheel" James Blunt "You're Beautiful" Daniel Powter "Bad Day"
I think those are the ones I wanted to cover.

Chris Brown? That almost makes it seem like he is a shoe-in as a nominee for Best New Artist (But then again, remember that Natasha Bedingfield and Jason Mraz also announced them and got nothing lol)
