I just have to comment on the CD that came with Tori Amos' new DVD, Welcome To Sunny Florida. First off, the DVD itself is great. If you missed this last tour, you get the perfect idea of how the shows were. The set is pretty good, but not the best. Fairly "safe" in terms of her song selection....a lot of the singles. Which isn't bad, of course. The one thing I must express disappointment with is the fact that they censored one of the songs. The song, Professional Widow, has the lines "Starfucker, just like my daddy," in which they mute fucker. Then, at the end, Tori passionately screams "Give me peace, love, and a hard cock." They mute cock, but she says it so loud that her piano microphone picks it up so it's not totally muted. Still, this censorship kind of ruins the performance, which would have been perfect. The DVD also has great interviews with Tori and behind-the-scenes footage of pre-concert stuff.
BUT, the best part of this release was the CD that came with it. It's an EP of 6 songs that were meant for Scarlet's Walk, but didn't flow with the album. It's obvious to because these songs sound totally different from the Scarlet songs. Here is my song-by-song review:
1.Ruby Through The Looking Glass - Amazing song about being pregnant and being physically abused while carrying the baby. Tori has mentioned this song in interviews before, never giving a title or lyrics, but it's clear that this is the song she was talking about. It's only vocal, piano, and guitar. It sounds a lot like Tori's song Honey. Tori's voice REALLY makes the delivery of the song sound so urgent and fierce. It's beautiful, but it's actually a sad song.
2.Seaside - This one was released on the Scarlet's Web enhancement on the Scarlet's Walk CD a while back. It's solo at the piano, and I gather that it's about the loss of innocence during a tradgedy, which the song mentions as bombings and violence. There is a slight echo on Tori's voice that makes this song very haunting.
3.Bug A Martini - Probably my least favortie on the CD. It's really unlike anything she's ever done. It sounds like a lounge song. I could also see it being played in a James Bond movie. It's really nothing too great. It's interesting, but I skip it.
4.Apollo's Frock - The most breath-taking song on the album. It's over 8 minutes long. The first three minutes are just Tori at the piano, no vocals or anything. Then, her vocals kick in. The lyrics create such beautiful imagery. During the chorus, a subtle guitar kicks in too. It's just an amazing song and she hasn't done anything so beautiful in a long, long time.
5.Tombigbee - Gives the CD a little kick in the ass :) It's very groovy and has a great rock flavor to it. On the DVD, this song is really powerful and Tori puts her whole heart into it. It's kind of political, and it has some interesting lyrics..."He loved me, he loved me, ravishingly low....Gotta hang these bones out to dry" It's great, and a nice change of pace.
6.Indian Summer - The closer of this EP is absolutely stunning. It's solo at the piano. The song itself is about female masturbation, mixed with politics. You'd have to read the lyrics to know what I'm talking about. But Tori's voice, again, is just in top-form and sounds so beautiful.
For Tori fans, this CD has been the best thing to come in a while. These are the types of songs we'd like to see on the new record...Scarlet's Walk was missing the piano. It was nice to have it back, front and center, with this EP.
By the way, Tori is busily recording her new album. It should be out sometime in 2005. :)
