What artists do you all think of who have been AROUND LONG ENOUGH and have had ENOUGH SUCCESS that they automatically have status? Newer names generally just won't cut it, even if they've had 3 huge hits in the last couple years, because chances are 2 albums from now they'll be working at KFC.
And it doesn't count if they've been around for 20 years but haven't really done but one thing anyone ever remembers.
So who comes to mind? Start maybe with people that are active right now in music, in 2005.

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera
Britney Spears will more likely be remembered as a Pop culture figure rather than a musician. I think 50 years from now, Britney will be like Marylin Monroe, i mean we all know Marylin was an actress, but no one can remember any movie she was in, but everyone knows her. The same thing will happen to Britney, everyone will know she's a singer, but her material won't become classics and they won't be remembered. Everyone refers to Marylin by the "Happy birthday Mr. President" song she sang to JFK, and everyone will refer to Britney walking down that hallway in that school girl outfit.
I think Christina will be known for her music, just like how Madonna was. She will be known as someone who always re-invented herself and was always unpredictible. Call me crazy but i really don't think people will remember Christina for her voice. Don't get me wrong, she does have an amazing voice, but an amazing voice is not good enough to give you status, especially in a world where image is everything. Christina's image will be remembered more than her voice will be. That's the reason she's popular today. If she was only popular for her voice, then she wouldn't be half as popular, and she wouldn't have achieved half the success or attention that she got.

you guys are only listing obvious ones, try to think of some that don't sell 5,000,000 albums but still have that sort of notoriety

I think Mary J. Blige will probably always be known on some level. Sometimes she sells a few million, sometimes she doesn't. But she seems to stand out from a lot of the other female singers. She was one of the first to meld hip hop and r&b as a singer.

So there! lol that's true, she counts And yes, Mary! good example. just look at how her heater track hit the hot 100 already, and her last album scanned less than a million units-- you can have sales like that and still be hot shit if ppl have that respect for you!

Sade Sometimes she comes out of nowhere and sells millions of albums under the radar with just a GREAT song and an established name. The name alone sells out concerts and albums worldwide. So many accomplishments, yet you don't see her on stage, recieving major achievement awards, or in the press everyday. I love how she can sell 2-3 million albums and win a Grammy, without any hype or drama at all. Sade and her amazing band are definitely a force. She hasn't exactly flopped, but I think her sales make up for the lack of coverage. And there's a lot of respect there, too.

Whitney, Madonna, Mariah, Britney....
I don't think Christina would be in that categorie...
She's not original, she's a mix of Britney/Madonna/Mariah....and the originals are a LOT better.....
