Thought it would be fun to list songs (and the exact lyric) where an artist mentions another artist in their song. It could be a diss or a shout out.
Snow Patrol's "Hands Open" there's the lyric:
"Put Sufjan Stevens on and we'll play your favorite song. " Definitely not a diss. :)

Taylor Swift - 'Tim McGraw' (...When you think Tim McGraw, I hope you think of me...) Carrie Underwood - 'Before He Cheats' (...she's probably up singing some white trash version of Shania karaoke...)

Lil' Kim's "Not Tonight" remix mentions Patti LaBelle.
"What I look like? Patti LaBelle or somebody n****? Heheh"
Pink mentioned Britney Spears in "Don't Let Me Get Me."
"Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears, She's so pretty, that just ain't me"
Eminem mentioned a bunch of artists in his songs.
In "The Real Slim Shady", he mentions Dr. Dre, Will Smith, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears,
In "Marshall Mathers", he mentions 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Ricky Martin, Vanilla Ice, Puff Daddy, and D-12.
Cyndi Lauper mentions Madonna's name, not necessarily in context in "Madonna Whore"

Johhny Depp and Gibby Haines of Butthole Surfers formed a short-lived side-band a decade ago called P (just like this, a single letter), and one of the songs was called "Michael Stipe", which revolved around, whaddaya know!, Michael Stipe. To this day I'm still trying to understand what was that about...

JoJo - "Get It Poppin'" (and the beat goes..ta-tat ta-tat tat..uh...haha...JoJo..Insomniax." (he's a producer, but close enough)
That's the only one I can think of now, but I'm sure I will think of more later.

The Bowling for Soup song "1985" is what made me think of this thread. The "who's the other guy singing in Van Halen" line comes off as a diss to me toward Sammy Hagar. What do you think? Here's another one: Kid Rock's "Devil Without a Cause": "Now my fuckin' bunnies gettin' fuckin' Matchbox 20 money"

Oh man the only one I can think of from the top of my head is in that Eminem song "Without Me" when he makes reference to Moby.
"And Moby, you can get stomped by Obie, You 36 year old bald headed f-- blow me"
There is also a reference to Elvis earlier on as well.

this is really horrible, but Jonas Brothers "Year 3000" shouts out Kelly Clarkson: "everyone bought our 7th album/it had outsold Kelly Clarkson". the original version of the same song by Busted had Michael Jackson in that same line.
another dumb one: Diana DeGarmo "Then I woke Up" shouts out 50 Cent and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
there's a song by The Roots that mentions Ruben Studdard. i don't remember the name of it, but it's like 10 minutes long.
Lady Sovereign's "Gatheration" is a cute one, though I think it's kind of a diss: "you'll get left out like the ginge from Girls Aloud", referring to redhead member Nicola.

How could I forget the Diana one??!?! Ugh.
I love Then I Woke Up and I think those lyrics are cute.
Regular lyrics to the chorus: I'm a hip-hop queen A rock-n-roll dream
Changed lyrics towards the end: I'm a little Lynryd Skynyrd A little 50 Cent

John Hiatt's song Slow Turning: "I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts".
He's not an artist, but he's big in the music business. Aerosmith's No Surprise:
nineteen seventy one we all heard the starters gun New York is such a pity but at Max's Kansas City we won we all shot the s**t at the bar with Johnny O'Toole and his scar and then old Clive Davis said he's surely gonna make us a star I'm gonna make you a star just the way you are but with all his style I could see in his eyes that we is goin' on trial and it was no surprize

Jessica Andrews' There's More To Me Than You calls out Toby Keith.
But in the country genre, no song drops more names than Clint Black's Tuckered Out. Here are the lyrics...
I've seen more than a Little Texas, And a Playboy always knows A man does what he Wills as long As he stays on his toes He can Russell up a fortune, Any man could strike it Rich But I'm doing good to keep it Strait And keep my wheels out of the ditch Ain't no Foster for the Desert Rose, The babblin' Brooks are Dunn That Crystal ball won't even book me One day in the Sun
I'm Haggard, worn and Waylon From the bottom of my Restless Heart Don't know Wy the Black cloud's tailin' me, There seems to be no Parton from the dark And I've had it to the Gills of knowin' What the Nitty Gritty's all about Bein' McEntired and Loveless I can't Lovett if I'm all Tuckered out
--- Instrumental ---
Well, I never meant to set out Like a half-cocked Gatlin gun No highway Head Hunter's Gonna let this Rabbitt run I ain't Raven 'bout The Ride, I probably got no fate to Seal If I can't roll through Alabama Half Asleepin' At The Wheel All my Paycheckes are like dried up Wells And way too small to Cash Or I'd find a roadside motel, Lay some money down to Crash

Several years ago there was a song with the chorus goes like this:
"I am afraid of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys and N'Sync, I don't know what to do"
It was an all-girl band, but I forget the name.

Lily Allen - Cheryl Tweedy the obvious
M.I.A. - Fire, Fire mentions Pixies, Beastie Boys, Lou Reed, Missy, Timbaland
Garbage - Enough Is Never Enough I always thought this was cute (reference to self): "Searching for fun, where do you go Got your leather boots on What do you know And they're playing Garbage on the radio"
Television's "Venus (De Milo)" mentions Richard Hell: Suddenly my eyes went so soft and shaky. I knew there was pain but pain is not aching. Then Richie, Richie said: "Hey man let's dress up like cops Think of what we could do!" But something, something said "you better not." And I fell.
Patti Smith "Rock 'N Roll ***I'M RACIST***" mentions Hendrix: Jimi Hendrix was a ***I'M RACIST***. Jesus Christ and Grandma, too. Jackson Pollock was a ***I'M RACIST***. ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***, ***I'M RACIST***.

THE MOST CLASSIC NAMEDROPPING SONG OF ALL TIME:
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - "LOSING MY EDGE":
Yeah, I'm losing my edge. I'm losing my edge. The kids are coming up from behind. I'm losing my edge. I'm losing my edge to the kids from France and from London. But I was there.
I was there in 1968. I was there at the first Can show in Cologne. I'm losing my edge. I'm losing my edge to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks. I'm losing my edge to the Internet seekers who can tell me every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978. I'm losing my edge.
To all the kids in Tokyo and Berlin. I'm losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties.
But I'm losing my edge. I'm losing my edge, but I was there. I was there. But I was there.
I'm losing my edge. I'm losing my edge. I can hear the footsteps every night on the decks. But I was there. I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City. I was working on the organ sounds with much patience. I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band. I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime." I was there. I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids. I played it at CBGB's. Everybody thought I was crazy. We all know. I was there. I was there. I've never been wrong.
I used to work in the record store. I had everything before anyone. I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan. I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes. I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.
But I'm losing my edge to better-looking people with better ideas and more talent. And they're actually really, really nice.
I'm losing my edge.
I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody. Every great song by the Beach Boys. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import. I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87. I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good '60s cut and another box set from the '70s.
I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record.
I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables. I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars.
I hear everybody that you know is more relevant than everybody that I know.
But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, Sexual Harrassment, a-ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, the Fania All-Stars, the Bar-Kays, the Human League, the Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagra,
Joy Division, Lower 48, the Association, Sun Ra, Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc,
Eric B. and Rakim, Index, Basic Channel, Soulsonic Force ("just hit me"!), Juan Atkins, David Axelrod, Electric Prunes, Gil! Scott! Heron!, the Slits, Faust, Mantronix, Pharaoh Sanders and the Fire Engines, the Swans, the Soft Cell, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics.
You don't know what you really want. (x15)
