The newest ratings book is out and KCBS-FM (93.1 Jack-FM) here in Los Angeles is still rising; it's up to #9 in the overall ratings, from 12th in the last book.
It remains #1 in adults 25-54, the most coveted demographic out there, with a stupendous 5.0 share in that demographic, the largest share in that demographic in several years.

I think the music is way too random. There's no thought pattern that goes into what is played, and I don't like a disembodied voice. I much prefer a live DJ that was into music.

What's wrong with Jack being way too random? It's supposed to be a train wreck. Combine that with the lack of on-air personalities (therefore, not knowing what song will be on next), it takes away the predictability that plagues radio these days.

The muisc is SUPPOSED to be random; the grand ppobahs at Inifinity, CC and other conglomerates have destroyed radio by using FAR too much reasearch, VERY small libraries (250 seems to be the max at many formats), LOTS of voicetracking, and FAR too many commercials.
With a new 'Jack-FM' station (KQJK) hitting the airwaves this morning in Sacramento, and with Howard Stern set to leave radio on December 16th, do NOT be surprised if there are many more converts to Jack-FM and its clones, thanks in a large part to the dollar signs that radio execs have undoubtedly noticed at stations such as L A's KCBS-FM (93.1 Jack-FM), which has soared to #1 in the 25-54 adults demo, THE most important demo out there.

Jack has now made his way to Wheeling, West Virginia as CHR WOMP welcomes Jack to their city.

The Jack in Kansas City is pretty good but I'm kind of mad about it because it replaced are only Hot AC station which we had for only a year. I swear I'm just going to have to start my own Hot AC station in KC so I can finally be happy and stop complaining about it all the time! It would be nicer if they'd play a few more 90's songs, they play too much 80's and we've got plenty of stations that play 80's music, I use to love 80's music but it seems like it will never go away and I'm tired of it.

How many eighties-music dominant stations are there in KC anyway?

Much as I like Jack FM, I was quite disappointed when they first came on here in New York (101.1) because they took over WCBS, my second favorite radio station. Yes! "Jack" is still the worst station in New York City plays everything (rock, pop,R&B,AC,country, etc.) replacing the beloved CBS-FM where they used to play oldies.

CBS-FM was 'blown up' by those in charge at Infinity in an attempt to snag a wider variety of listeners; next to Star 100.7 in San Diego flipping to the 'Jack-FM format' a few months ago, this was probably the most noteworthy 'JackFlip' of 2005.

I like Jack, but the voice is very obnoxious. I know it's supposed to be that way, but it's really just annoying.

You know how Jack never says what they're playing or who the artist is (supposedly, everyone is supposed to just "know")...anyway, they have this one line where the Jack voice comes on and says something like, "if you have one of those new car stereos that shows what we're playing...great...if you don't, then go buy a new car or something...get with the program!".....recently, I did buy a newer car that does display song titles/artists (not all stations do it, but some do), and Jack was one of them. But get this: they stopped doing it and now just flash back and forth "96.3" and "Jack FM". That's when they started the liner about going out and getting a new car that shows what song is playing. WTF? What is wrong with them? Some people cannot afford a new car (even I can't but I did anyway!)...it's just like they're playing with people's minds. They DON'T show what they're playing yet they're claiming they do. I can't believe how stupid that station is. As for the music, at this point, it's getting more predicitable and less enjoyable to listen to. They end songs and go straight into commercials. They dropped the jingles. It's no fun to listen to anymore. They really need to go back to how they were last May and June!

I've actually listened to Jack now and again (surfing from Xmas music) and sometimes they do play something I haven't heard for awhile, and realize I miss hearing. But I still don't like the "unconnectedness" of Jack radio. I like to feel some sort of empathy with a DJ.

I like the JACK format, though I wish they would throw a few currents in there... also, I've heard both the San Diego (KFMB) and Los Angeles (KCBS) JACK stations... It seems the San Diego jack plays a tad more variety than the L.A. one... big surprise, NOT!

I do hope that "Jack" would be in the record books as the worst station in New York City of 2005 playing too much garbage with those dumb liners where Howard Cogan made. Howard Cogan is one of the guy who knows the Geico ads came up with "Jack" on 101.1. Give me a break! >:( This is not good in New York City.

I don't like the unconnectedness of the CHR/Pop format today.

I don't like the unconnectedness of the CHR/Pop format today. I think what he meant is that since Jack is primarily a jockless format, they don't have the human element that radio is accustomed to (and supposed to be ). In some ways, not having jocks on Jack do suck. I was very disappointed in Jack FM here when Hurricane Katrina was affecting the area. They did very little in informing the public on what was going on. I know they want to emphasize music, but that was uncalled for.

Just curious -- what do you consider noteworthy about the San Diego flip? It's probably one of the better JACKs, but I (and most people here) aren't happy they flipped. Their ratings took a nosedive from like 4.8 to 3.3. Now the Triple A station that I used to love so much (KPRI) is trying to turn itself into a ridiculous combination of the Modern AC that JACK replaced *and* JACK, with predictably disastrous results. At this rate, a few more months and KPRI is gonna drive itself out of the market completely.

Probably noteworthy in that Star 100.7 was considered one of the leading hot AC stations in the country and was the highest-profiled station up until that time to flip to Jack.

^^ Yeah, Star was a very successful Hot AC station in SD... I was pretty shocked (as was the industry) when they flipped to the Jack format...

I like JACK FM because I like a mixture of various types of music. Gave up on KISS FM and that whole deal because of the DJ's and repetitive nature. Ugh. Most of radio today is a big whippin' so I listen to my iTunes playlist mostly.

I like Jack and I don't.
I like the variety, but the reason I don't really listen to it is that it is still a bit too random. I think it'd be better to seperate formats for certain hours for the sake of continuity.
I'd like there to be jocks on Jack and I'd also like there to be an emphasis on current stuff from all different genres.

That's my biggest beef with the format... spin the currents too... throw them in a few times a week just like your most popular gold/recurrents... the listeners will be VERY appreciative and it will keep the station from getting as stale as it would otherwise...

Star 100.7 in San Diego was arguably the nation's best and most prestigiouis Hot AC station when it flipped; PD Tracy Johnson was also the PD of that city's once-upon-a-time hugely successful CHR/Pop powerhouse, Q106 (KKLQ), thanks in part to having Jeff and Jer in morning drive.
When the three of them left Q106 for Star 100.7, Q106 tanked, and eventually flipped to another format.
